But the season isn't over yet.

Posted - 11/03/2010 : 20:13:31 Another crippling blow, Brodeur left the game with an injury tonight.
There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs". |

How can a team like the Devils be in last?

Posted - 11/03/2010 : 07:50:09 Slozo, i'd say Parise's is the first major long term injury this year that will affect many if not every draft pool! Luckily, i don't have him in any of mine (whew!).
If nothing else, at least Kovalchuk has been in this situation before, being the only real true superstar on a team, although i suppose we could throw Brodeur in there too?
All in all, i think they'll miss the dance this year after this awful start but won't be surprised if they find a way in. Imagine them finding their defensive game, Brodeur being on his game, getting Parise back for the stretch drive and having your favorite team draw them as the 7th or 8th seed? Yikes! |

Posted - 11/03/2010 : 05:23:36 Parise out will kill my chances of winning my draft pool this year . . . crap!
I am actually not sure that this will be such a terrible thing for the Devils . . . something has been up with this team, and the chemistry or whatever isn't there right now.
A top player out and a road trip is what might fix the Devils, actually . . . with Kovalchuk, they are a talented enough team anyways up front.
They will still make the playoffs, middle of the pack is my guess.

Posted - 11/02/2010 : 23:45:39 my cap count for next year included Arnott and Langenbrunner being off the books, they are in fact the bulk of the 8M that is available. They have 8M to fill 7 spots, including replacing Arnott and Langenbrunner with (seemingly) cheaper options.
There are really not a lot of moves the Devils can make without getting into some major players - if they're really serious about keeping Parise and building a team, they'll likely have to get rid of someone big - Zajac, Elias, White or Salvador. Hell, perhaps Brodeur will retire and do them a favour...

Posted - 11/02/2010 : 23:06:41 They'll have Arnott's 4.5M off the books (don't understand why they traded for him in the first place), and I suspect Langenbrunner and his 2.8M will also be gone. Jersey will then need to make a couple moves still, but there's no way Lamoriello lets Parise leave. |

Posted - 11/02/2010 : 22:06:18 Alex, its a good point, and I should probably give NJ management some credit, they must know what its going to cost them to keep Parise. I don't really know what they were thinking then. |

Did the Devils not see this coming though? Either they already knew for some reason that Parise wants to go elsewhere or they were crazy to throw so much at Kovy! |

Posted - 11/02/2010 : 17:31:34 This year looks bleak now, but they need time to gel. I watched them last night against the Canucks, and they played a decent game - the score was not reflective of how things went, Luongo played one hell of a game. Kovalchuk looked dangerous and had a couple of chances, and seemed to be on the ice all the time. We'll see where they are at Christmas.
I too think there is little hope of NJ being able to afford Parise next year, unless they move some unmovable contracts (Rolston), or get Brodeur to retire and spend a lot less on goaltending. They have 8M in capspace for next year and have to sign Parise and 6 other players. Parise could command 7 of that 8M all himself. Which is a shame - if I were a GM and given the choice of Kovalchuk or Parise, I would take Parise. |
