Posted - 01/03/2011 : 18:00:18 I'm not looking to compare Crosby/Ovechkin to Lemieux/Gretzky. Not yet, anyways.
I also don't expect a lot 80's records to be broken, this day in age. It's just not really possible any more.
But I will say, what Sid is doing and what he continues to do, is just amazing to me.
This kid just continues to improve his game, season after season. He is committed, and I love how he handles it.

Posted - 01/03/2011 : 06:22:01 Goalie equipment & goalies themselves have come to far for their to ever really be a serious challenger to any of Lemieux & Gretzky's dominant years.
So lets just sit back and enjoy an era where the kids are taking the game to another level.

Posted - 01/02/2011 : 01:15:16 Again, it's so difficult to compare. Is Crosby's streak as impressive as Gretzky's? Maybe for some it is. It is not the same game today as it was when 99 did his magic. I'm in no way saying Crosby is at 99's level and he may never approach some of his numbers but Crosby is on an unbelievable tear this year. Sit back and enjoy it, especially any of you who were too young to see the bulk of 99 and 66's careers! |

Posted - 01/01/2011 : 21:53:52 Gretzky and Lemieux? Really? Of course they are higher up the list than Crosby. So are a bunch of other guys. It never fails, I could say, "Alex Tanguay had a good game last night," and someone would say, "Gretzky and Lemieux were better." Duh.
However, if you like guys who are already very good and adding new pieces to their game every year you might want to keep an eye on Crosby. |

Posted - 01/01/2011 : 12:08:47 I didn't expect the streak to end the way it did. I really thought that if it were snapped before 51 it would happen in todays classic. As anyone who has played on the frozen over ponds and streams, which would be pretty much everyone who has ever played hockey, the elements can have an impact.. Here's hoping the classic is the start of a new streak.
And Beans you are right that he has some work to do to be placed in a catogory with Lemieux and Gretzky but he has the time to do that work. I still think Crosby is 3 or 4 years from his true peak.
Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?" |

A 25 Game point streak, with 50 points during that span. That's 2.00 PPG over 25-games. Not bad at all.
Irvine/prez.
Absolutely right. Best we have seen in a long time.
However, put into perpective when Lemieux and Gretzky were averaging 2.5+ for the entire season.
Put another something in perspective. In 83/84, Gretzky his 100 points on December 18th. That's right, 34 games and a killer 2.95 PPG over that period of time.
Crosby is sick. No doubt, different game today than it used to be. But he still has some work to do to be talked about at a G.O.A.T |

Posted - 12/28/2010 : 13:28:40 Lol Beans you are so correct & since when have crosby & malkin ever had chemistry together? There is a reason they have played with each other for 5 or 6 yrs and never consistenly both been linemates. That sounds like they have real chemistry

The only hope for Crosby to get past 30 is Malkin and Stall. Put Malkin more with Crosby because Malkin is on a streak as well. Both of them have great chemistry while the rest of the penguins are slowly dying
Ya, since we are all super smart hockey people, Pitt will for sure drop to an average team.
Hey, while we are at it, Detroit is too old to compete. Lidstrom is too old to have a Norris trophy, Dallas sucks and will miss the playoffs, and the Leafs are good, they are just really young.
Yep, it's all coming true. Wait and see!!! |

Slozo, after the Stamkos poll went up, he slumped. If Crosby now slumps, i'm gonna have to think that someone actually DID do a Leafs poll? We must have just missed it? |

Posted - 12/22/2010 : 06:48:22 Lol love the thread about the leafs Slozo made my morning
Everything about this is based on optimism but i had to say yes just for the sake of interest. I mean who would have ever thought crosby would score 21 goals in 21 games just two yrs ago little own 42 points in 21. I think if Malkin is truly healthy now which he has looked in the last 3 since returning and Staal returns after the holidays that the ice will open up substantially more and crosby could (key word) go on an even more dynamic tear. If he can get through the winter classic were the ice will be rougher, and the legs and lungs will take an extra pounding in the frigid temps then the streak could possibly reach 52.
First we have to see if he even reaches 30 but it is always fun to look into Mrs Cleo's crystal ball, |

Posted - 12/21/2010 : 22:29:13 well honestly, 21 is pretty freaking impressive. I'm already impressed. 30 would be magical. 52 would be the story of the year.
I like this story mainly because its one of those Gretzky records that people felt would never be touched.... |

Posted - 12/21/2010 : 21:07:11 I voted no if he reaches 30 that would be impressive. |

Posted - 12/21/2010 : 20:22:35 No, that would help me in my pool but its not going to happen. Also leafs81, about when you said that they would have to go 51 games without getting shutout, in 2007-2008 ago Detroit scored at least one goal in every game but two, and they were in the last 30 games, so they went over 50 straight scoring
Henderson has scored for Canada |
umteman |
Posted - 12/21/2010 : 20:16:55 I'd love to see him do it so voting yes. BTW in the same game that pushed Crosby's streak to 21 Malkin put up a career high 5 points.
Did you hear about the retired proctologist? He spent 40 years saying "what's a place like this doing in a girl like you?" |
Leafs81 |
Posted - 12/21/2010 : 17:58:00 Still 30 games to go. That's more then the double. I mean anything is possible but I vote no.
It would mean that Pittsburgh would never get shutout in 51 games straight, and that Crosby plays well enough to get a least a point every night and that he doesn't get injured or suspended in that streak.
When Gretzky made it it was in the 80's, when the Oilers were at the top of their offensive game. Even if Gretzky had an off night there was enough support out front for the others to score 6 or 7 goals and to get Gretzky on the score sheet. At the end of the streak Gretzky was playing injured, he didn't want to lose the streak because of an injury so he kept playing. When on the 52nd game he didn't score a point, he sat down the next couple of games to heal his injury. Pretty impressive.
Lets look at 30 for now. |
nuxfan |
Posted - 12/21/2010 : 17:03:03 oh come on! where's the optimism? It would be good to see one of the long-standing records get broken... the last one was games won in a season a few years back. The longest point streak in recent memory was Heatley with 22 in 2005.
I would argue that 50 goals in 50 games is significantly harder than points in 51 straight games, I never thought Stamkos would do it myself. Not that either is particularly easy mind you... |
Alex116 |
Posted - 12/21/2010 : 16:56:37 Like the talk of Stamkos getting 50 in 50 after just 19 games (or whatever it was), it's still far too early for me to think he'll make it. It's one of those things, if he did / does break it, i wouldn't be completely shocked, however, i just don't see it or expect it to happen!
AND nuxfan, now that you've brought this up, you've prob jinxed him! You watch, he'll prob fall into a HUGE slump and not get a point for one whole game! |
foolpittier |
Posted - 12/21/2010 : 16:45:38 and i'll be going with the no. |
nuxfan |
Posted - 12/21/2010 : 16:36:14 Crosby is currently at 21 games. Still a long way to go, but the way he's playing right now it seems reachable. I'm going for the yes. |
