IMO, the Oilers will pick whichever one they want most, because they're the team which is gonna be last by the time the seasons done! Just my guess of couse...

still the same picks

Not so sure. Oilers have a ton of young guys with lots of potential up front. They may like a guy like Larsson on the back end to start shoring up the D.

Right now if the Devils won the lottery, the picks would go like this
1. New Jersey
2. Edmonton
3. New York Islanders
4. Ottawa
I think the Devils would take Couturier, the Oilers would take Larsson, the Islanders would take Nuget-Hopkins, and the Sens would take Landeskog.

Irvine, I am in good ol' SJ as well :)
irvine Posted - 01/22/2011 : 14:29:28
I've seen Huberdeau play quite a lot, as he plays for my hometown Saint John Sea Dogs of the Q.

And I will say he is a talented player. But, that being said, he plays for a stacked team. The Sea Dogs go pretty quite in the CHL, but have been ranked #1 in the CHL a lot of the past two seasons. Not just in the Q.

The team just does not get the credit they deserve, or the attention, usually. Highly talented team.

I'm not taking away from Jonathon's skill, but his teammates certainly help him out. He may go top 10, if he continues his play.

But the Sea Dogs also have D Nathan Bealieu and F Tomas Jurco, both who could go top 30.

We shall see, a lot things depend. But, I'm thinking top 4 won't change much.
Guest6470 Posted - 01/20/2011 : 19:00:28
Alex, yeah the kid is amazing. Now I know what he does in the Q may not translate into the NHL but he does soemthing just stupid (good) every game that just makes everyone shake their head and go how'd he do that? lol Like you said he just keeps moving up and if I was a GM I wouldn't hesitate to keep that trend going.. he's so awesome.
Alex116 Posted - 01/20/2011 : 10:02:13
Slozo, i like him too, it's just i've seen people quite critical of him, not just here, but other comments from articles he's written.

I trust his opinion a lot when it comes to juniors!

JonPolley..... Huberdeau's name came up last night when i was watching TSN. Can't remember who was being asked, i think it may have been Doug Maclean? Anyway, he had Nugent-Hopkins at 1 and if i remember correctly, Huberdeau at 6 or 7? Pretty remarkable that he's moved up that far. He was touted as a 2nd rounder originally, then had moved up into the late first round (in the 20's) and now top 10!
polishexpress Posted - 01/20/2011 : 08:05:56
I think Irvine nailed it.

If the picks are not going to yield a Crosby-esque player, then teams would be more likely to go for filling a position they are lacking in.

For example, if Edm would get a the 2nd overall pick (likely, the way they're playing, plus the lottery could make them get a better or worse pick...) they would love to get a D-man or potential top-line center.

I have no clue which they would pick, a F or D, but if Larsson is highly touted, I'd love to see him on the team.

Still, a team, given the chance, if they have a top pick, will more than likely go for the best player available, in their opinion. (I remember hearing that multiple times in quotes from Oilers staff leading up to last year's draft)

Alex - you just mentioned one of theguys I count on for prospect info - Bob McKenzie. He does half himself, and the other half he gathers from his own inside sources . . . but he has excellent insight (going by history) and is usually correct in his evaluations.

JonPolley Posted - 01/20/2011 : 06:56:43
none of them!.. Jonathan Huberdeau is an amazing hockey player, he's younger and his potential is amazing. I'd pick him!

And Boston's 1st pick is Couturier, & they thank Toronto.

No one prob cares, especially cuz there seems to always be a "hate-on" for Bob MacKenzie, but his midseason rankings on the top 4 prospects are as follows:

1. Larsson
2. Nugent-Hopkins
3. Landeskogg
4. Couturier

Sorry, no link, was just watching it on TSN
n/a Posted - 01/17/2011 : 18:21:25
I'll preface my comment by saying I hardly follow junior hockey at all . . . so I am largely ignorant save for reading up on what really knowledgable people have to say.

It's a crapshoot. I am old enough to remember a few drafts where they said it's a so-so class of players . . . and later called it one of the greatest draft classes ever (2003). You just never know. Hall could end up being a career 55 point player, and some kid from the third round could be the next Steve Yzerman . . .

So you trust your scouts, and go with whoever they say is the best prospect!

Oh, I voted Larsson . . . 'cause that's what my insiders were tellin' me!

"Take off, eh?" - Bob and Doug
doublechamp7 Posted - 01/17/2011 : 16:31:01
Bob McKenzie from TSN thinks that any of the top 6 players in the draft could go first overall. The draft class doesn't have lots of big names as said before, but it does have a lot of solid players(like canadas junior team). I think who gets picked all depends on who gets the first pick.

The juniors have failed for Canada
irvine Posted - 01/16/2011 : 15:05:22
@ Admin:

I'd not say the draft is as deep as last years, in the sense of 'big names'. Such as Hall or Seguin. I also don't foresee it having a stud like Crosby or Ovechkin, of course. So I suppose you could say it's not as deep, in some sense.

But it does have a few solid players, especially in the top 5. Couturier provides the size and two-way play that teams covet. He still has work to do, to be an every day NHL player. But I do see him going #1 Overall. Even if New Jersey land the #1 overall pick. They may need a defender, but NJ won't pass up on a two-way forward who can buy in to their defense first system. Couturier, can do that. He's 6'4, but lacks a bit in weight still. He can add the pounds needed though.

Gabriel Landeskog is also a guy who plays a solid two-way game. In fact, I'd say even more so defensively than Couturier. But, he does not produce as well offensively as Sean does. He has the potential to, but as of now, Couturier is up in the offensive department.

Now, #3 & #4 Overall will be subjective at this point. It could go either way.

You have the speedy, skilled (but small), Nugent-Hopkins and the Swedish Elite's Adam Larsson. Larsson could slide up to #2, if a team wants a defencemen more-so than a forward. But, I don't see Nugent-Hopkins going 1 or 2. Mainly, because of his lack in size.

Right now, things can all be subjective. It's hard to predict what a team will choose, as needs usually determine the picks. But, I will say 1/2 slots are already secured, no matter the needs. Couturier and Landeskog both provide the size, skill and two-way play teams like.

I`ve always maintained a ( scouts are not all that sure ) attitude toward draftees. Unless you are a Sid the kid, Ovie, Stamkos, Hall, Tavares or something close, it is very debateable on who is going to blossom into a Great NHL player.

One thing i do know for sure, some teams have much better Scouts than others. Several NHL teams ALWAYS pick top prospects no matter where they draft, position wise, ( eg ) Detroit, Philly....these teams never draft high but get great return.
admin Posted - 01/16/2011 : 10:51:51
Well one way we all can become more knowledgeable is by sharing and discussing the information so let's get back on topic.

Irvine, please tell us your thoughts on these prospects. I hear that overall this year's prospects are not as strong as previous years., is this true?
Beans15 Posted - 01/16/2011 : 10:23:11
Irvine, I was not intending to insult anyone specifically and it would be very short sighted of me to say that no one has any clue. However, you are part of a very small minority. For example, I have researched various ways to get European hockey and in my area there is no service provider that will show those games.

What I was refering to was Joe Average fan who will see the updated central scouing report or watch Bob MacKenzie's mid-season review and act like experts.

Consider this, there are going to be 30-1st round draft picks this year and I would suggest those 30 players will come from a pool of about 50 of the elite juniors in the world.

How many people you would consider a hockey fan can name even 10 of those players?? Really, that's 20% of the top 50 juniors in the world. I know I can't do it. I would venture to say that the VAST majority of NHL hockey fans could not either.

Furthermore, not only looking at this years picks, how many people(without digging into the website) could name the top 3 picks of their own favorite team over the past 2-3 years??? Heck, how many people can name their team's 2nd round draft pick from last year??

My point is that this 'draft pick' knowledge is primarily media driven. Not 100% as there are fans such as yourself that have a deeper knowledge of the juniors than most. But the average fan has no clue other than what Bob MacKenzie feeds them.
irvine Posted - 01/16/2011 : 10:17:08
The CHL consists of three leagues. Western, Quebec & Ontario.

And no, nobody is going to know every player in every league. But, some do follow more than one hockey league.

I for one follow quite a few, and quite often. I'm not saying I am an expert, by any means. But I do watch as much foreign leagues as I do the NHL.

Before the Olympics, I had pointed out a few players to watch on teams that, are generally going to finish near the bottom. Such as that of, Mr. Zuccarrello-Aasen, of Norway. Who, now has been signed by the Rangers.

A small body, who has skill to spare with his hands and speed.

All I am saying is, just because one doesn't know much about players outside of the NHL, no matter how big a hockey fan you may be, do not assume all know nothing about other leagues. A good friend of mine covers prospects for a living, and did the WJC this year in Buffalo. He and I discuss these youngsters on a near daily basis, so I do know a bit about these kids I suppose.

I just want to say that I don't agree with how this guest said it, I agree emphatically with what he says. Reason being is that:

a) even if there is a CHL team in the city/town you live in, it is only one team. And you are only seeing one of the 4(I think(leagues in the CHL).

b) even if you have a good grasp on the CHL, what about the US college system, the KHL, the Swedish elite league, and the cornicopia of other leagues in Europe.

So, each of us might have some knowledge of a small % of the players available but I highly doubt that anyone has an idea of the entire pool. Even pro teams have scouts assigned to specific areas as it is far too big of a pool of talent to have knowledge of the entire thing.

I, for one, don't follow any junior hockey other than the WJC so I know squat. Secondly, the only thing we can go on as a base is central scouting.

Guest 0441 i think you fell and bumped your head. I get many people may not no any of these guys outside of the jrs but never assume that everyone is clueless. Anybody who knows & loves hockey not just the nhl realizes that Larsson has been on the radar & compared to Hedman the last 2 + yrs so their is obvious talent their. Couturier & Nugent - Hopkins have been on the radar since they were 16 and can be scene on either sportsnet west or east atleast 6 times a yr lol and couturier led all of the Q in points last yr at 16 so if you had not heard or seen him play then you have no interest in hockey outside of the nhl. The only kid i have never seen play is Landskog and as of last week he is ranked 1 so he is got to be doing something well. I live in a city where their is junior hockey so you gain appreciation for the young guys coming up.

Regardless, it is way to premature for this question to be brought up as there is no guarntee Jersey will be the number 1 pick yet. Wait another 25 games until you see hands down who will finish last and have the best statistical oppurtunity at drafting first. Depending on that teams needs will depend on who will most likely be drafted. For Ex Beans always raves that the oil need a big centre so i would presume couturier would be on their radar where as the devils lack depth on d so they may lean more towards a guy like Larsson. Allow the season to play out for a bit longer then this thread may become a hot topic.

Lemieux owns Gretzky

Guest 0441 to add to the comments made in response to your post. Believe me I know these guys due to the fact the team I cheer for will be having a shot at drafting early so you are way off on your post. I like the kid From NB too!
irvine Posted - 01/15/2011 : 12:42:03
@ Guest0441:

People do follow hockey other than that of the NHL.

I watch (admittedly), not a ton of each, the CHL (QMJHL, OHL, WHL), KHL (Russian League), SM-LIIGA (Finnish League), DEL (German), Swedish Elite and Swiss.

So yeah, I'm sure I could tell you a bit about some players you've never even heard tell of. Others could too, I'm sure.

I for one am a fan of my fellow New Brunswicker. I'll let Guest figure out which one that is.

But, all four are solid prospects with their own degree of skill in different areas.

Guest0441...what about us who follow/live in cities with CHL clubs?? 3 of the 4 players he listed play major junior here in Canada!
Guest0441 Posted - 01/15/2011 : 11:43:22
I have absolutely no idea. You don't either. Anyone who says they have a sniff about this years prospects are morons. Just because you watched kid play in the WJC means you have watched about 4 games of a player. He could be hot, he could be cold and that is what you are going on.

Don't act like a genius who just follows central scouting.
