Apparently it's Lidstrom and Staal to captain the all star teams. Staal, obviously to generate some hometown interest in the game?

Thoughts?

I think Hemsky is out now too with a concussion from last night's game.

Danny Briere is in for Iggy

Iginla was withdrawn from the game due to a family illness.

Here's what i found in Wikipedia after a bit of research (wiki info in italics).....

Jan 24, 2007 - American Airlinies Center in Dallas
Crosby was voted a starter

Jan 27, 2008 - Philips Arena in Atlanta
^4 Sidney Crosby was named to the East all-star team as a starter, but did not play due to injury. Evgeni Malkin was named as his roster replacement, while Ilya Kovalchuk was named as his replacement on the starting lineup.

Jan 25, 2009 - Bell Center in Montreal
^E1 Sidney Crosby was voted into the starting lineup for the Eastern Conference All-Star Team, but was unable to play due to injury. Martin St. Louis was named as his replacement on the roster and Vincent Lecavalier as his replacement in the starting lineup.[11][12]

So, with no game in '06 or '10 because of the Olympics and two missed, this means he's only played in 1? If so, when i looked at the boxscore from the game he did play in, he didn't register a point on any of the 9 goals. SO, what i'm saying is i just ruined what could have been a great trivia question! If i'm not mistaken, this means he's got 0 total points in his all star game career!

Great pick in Lidstrom.

I didn't know Eric was that respected among the players.

Would be interesting to see how the teams turn out.

Last night, during intermission of the Bos / Car game, Eric joked that his brother's somewhere near the bottom when it comes to picking. .......and ya Mario, that was stated during the same game last night. A car for the hurt feelings of the last millionaire to be picked :)

I really like the picks Staal being the hometown guy and lidstrom being the obvious pick out of the bunch. Not to mention the captain picks still keep the old east vs west rivalry going (slightly) and maybe their picks will coincide with that. With the exception of the Sedins once D or H are selected you can guarntee the next pick will be the other.

Alex, Crosby has missed only one allstar game due to an ankle injury in Montreal and i heard the other day that Zetterberg requested not to be selected for the all star game due to all the injuries in Detroit. I bring this up only because many wondered in the original all star thread why he was not selected.

Also, anybody else hear that the last pick in the draft will be given a new car or something similar to console their ego? Earning millions of dollars and being one of 40 players out of a league 7 - 800 players isn't enough anymore?

I heard something on sportsnet before the captains were announced that Marc didnt want to be on Eric's team cause he's to mean...haha So that might affect Eric's choice and maybe try and make his brother the last pick

Its possible that they will end up on different teams - each captain could take one.

Not the "sexy" picks that an NHL bigwig would pick, but picks of superstar players who are very well respcted, and the addition of being the hometown guy of course in Staal (although his numbers support him being there).

Makes sense to have Crosby decline if he is still recovering from his concussion . . . and no Ovechkin, no Sedin . . . I kind of like it.

I agree 100% Staal is a great choice as Captain espcially in contrast to Lidstrom.. i love it!

Cam Ward actually won the Conn Smythe in '06 when the Canes won the Cup, not Staal.

And i agree, it would of been cool to see Henrik & Daniel as the 2 captains

Gotta keep in mind too that the Captains were voted on by the Eligible players. With Sid likely out and Eric Staal's home rink taken into consideration I'm not surprised he was picked at all.

Beyond that, I really like both picks. Lidstrom is arguably the best defenseman in the last 20 years, and Staal is one of the best Centers in the league (with Olympic Gold, a Conn Smythe, and a Cup to back it up)

For sheer awesomeness I would've elected Henrik and Daniel myself.

Since the Captains have to pick a D-man with one of their first 5, does that mean Lidstrom is exempt?

Heard on the news today that it's "very likely" Crosby won't be particpating yet again. Apparently he's missed 2 or 3 ASG's already due to injuries!

Not really surprising, Crosby, Lidstrom & Staal were the names that popped up most in articles i read/panels i've heard...and Crosby's participation is obviously still very much up in the air at this point.

Both good choices IMO.
