Bieksa might have been the best defender last night, so I'm thinking he bounced back fine. He's been in enough fights to not get rattled by a loss.
ok I admit I was proud of myself for that one. But you are right, he's an experienced enough middle weight not to let it bother him, and in fact might be motivated by it. |

Edler
He is the #1 dman on one of the most offensively productive teams in the league,
Edler isn't that good of a #1 D, he's one of the worst of the contending teams |

Don't forget Bieksa's bruised ego.
Not just his ego, his freakin' grill! Man, that was a punch! That punch is the reason they called up Lea Sweatt, last nights hero, in the first place! They weren't sure the swelling around Bieksa eye would go down enough to allow him to see well enough to play!

Posted - 01/27/2011 : 10:32:24 yep, it does look that way. Back surgery, out indefinately. They haven't said season ending yet, but back surgery recovery is non-trivial. I can't see him back until deep in the playoffs at the earliest...

The only silver lining is that putting Edler on the IR will free up the cap space required to bring Salo back into the lineup, when he's ready to go. And, its almost a dead certainty that no defenseman will be moved from Vancouver this year. |

I see Edler play more than Burns so I would probably choose him because I would know what I was getting. Edler is definitely on the rise and his offensive peak is probably five or six years off. Couple his offensive upside with his innate defensive ability and you've got the makings of a scaled-back Lidstrom. For a young guy he doesn't panic and while he is very physical he doesn't run around looking for the big hit; he let's the hit's come to him and otherwise plays the body responsibly most times. I like that. |

I just knew as i read your "coin flip" comment that this (above) would be your tie-breaker! lol |

Posted - 01/26/2011 : 14:05:13 Flip a coin. I like both guys. Both are young, speedy, great offensive upside and solid defensive abilities. Really, everything one would want in a young d-man. I think Burns is a little more versitile and has played some forward. I think Burns is a little better defensively. I think Edler is more mobile and I think Edler has a little more offensive upside than Burns.
I would complain about neither and one could not lose in a choice between the two.

Posted - 01/26/2011 : 11:26:36 First off, this question is very poorly worded. Is this for hockey pools? Is this for your team going forward? If i were a GM? Please feel free to clarify the question.
Secondly, i don't see Burns as much as i do Edler of course, but i have seen enough of him to realize he's a pretty good defender. A "Norris trophy candidate" might be a little strong IMO, including throwing in the word "again" as i don't really recall him ever being in the conversation? Again, he's good, maybe even above average, but i don't think he ever was even close to being nominated. I could be wrong though.
For those who don't see a lot of Edler, i can understand not picking him. He's likely still a bit of an unknown outside of Vancouver. He won't be for much longer. He's quietly developed into one of our top defenders who plays in all situations. He has stepped his physical game up which he admitted was the most difficult adjustment from growing up playing in Sweden. He's got a killer shot (beat Salo in '08 Canucks skills comp and won in '09 and '10 as well) and has seen his ice time increase to the point where he's pretty much the Canucks #1 dman. Also of note, his point totals have increase every year since entering the league. This kid is a lot better than many realize!
Here, from wikipedia is a great story about how the Canucks discovered him and furthermore, made sure they grabbed him before Detroit did (once they caught wind that Det was interested too)!
Edler was largely unknown during his NHL draft year, unranked by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau the entire season.[2] He was brought to the attention of the Vancouver Canucks by the team's head scout in Sweden, Thomas Gradin, who saw Edler playing with Jämtlands HF.[2] Although Gradin would refer to the team's level of play as little more than beer-league-calibre,[2] he was impressed with Edler and encouraged Canucks management to draft him (Edler's number 23 with the Canucks would later be chosen by team trainers in honour of Gradin).[3] The Canucks traded up in the 2004 NHL Entry Draft to acquire the Dallas Stars' third-round draft pick in exchange for their own third-round pick in the 2005 draft and selected Edler 91st overall. The deal was made with the Stars in lieu of speculation that the Detroit Red Wings had a high interest in Edler and wanted to draft him in the third round as well.[2][4] Detroit had discovered Edler in Sweden through their European scout Håkan Andersson, who was responsible for such previous Red Wings late-round picks as Henrik Zetterberg and Pavel Datsyuk. |

Posted - 01/26/2011 : 04:16:55 Before the season started, Edler over Burns hands down . . . as Burns seemed to have lost it a bit, and Minny looked to be a team on a downward spiral, which does affect the d-man position quite a bit.
Now, total reversal, despite Vancouver's record: Burns looks like a Norris candidate again (he was great a couple of years ago), and Edler is good, but not great.
Somehow, in a 10 man pool with 6 d-men each . . . Burns was not drafted, and we are all kicking ourselves about it!

Posted - 01/25/2011 : 20:27:50 I picked Burns before Edler in my pool (only points) because he can surprise you anytime with a 3-4 point game.
On the other side, I think Edler is a more complete defenseman, and I would pick him before Burns to win the cup, but not to win a pool.

Posted - 01/25/2011 : 19:56:35 Edler
a) I'm biased
b) he has potential for more points. He is the #1 dman on one of the most offensively productive teams in the league, and one where defensemen are encouraged to join the rush at all times. He also plays on the #1 PP unit on said team with the Sedin's, where he gets the bulk of his points (current half of his points on the PP). He's gonna get points. Edler has increased his point total every year since joining the NHL, he's on pace for more than 60 this year - I'm not sure where his max potential lies. Burns has never had more than 43 points in any season (although he looks sure to break that this year) and has solidly produced at a pace of .5 PPG over his career. He has also had injury issues the last 2 seasons.
I'm assuming this is a general question. If its a pool-facing question, I would also consider that Edler is a + player, Burns is not (given his team its not surprising). |
