Just heard on TSN that E. Malkin suffered a torn ACL and MCL early in last night's game? Had a quick look on their website and there's nothing in the "headlines" so it's early news at this point.

The reporter said that he's going to have a second opinion before commenting?

Ouch, not good for the Pens.

Here is what I wrote, and what others alluded to:
" . . . Malkin's decreased production by his standards"

(referring to this year)

We are talking about a former MVP here, people. Someone who was in Crosby's range prior to two years, and someone who has always been ABOVE a point a game.

Before the season ending injury, Malkin had 15 goals, 22 assists, 37 points in 43 games played. That would have put him on pace for his lowest ever assist total, and under 30 goals and possibly his lowest goal total, even lower than the 28 he scored in 67 games last year.

So yeah, he was off his usual pace. His usual pace is amazing, top 5 - so one must put it into context. Almost every player in the league can only dream of having an offseason of a Crosby, Ovechkin or a Malkin. And my guess is, he was playing with injuries.

I'm not sure they're looking for another centre - Staal could certainly move up to 2nd line centre with little problem.

not many great centers out there on short term deals, they might get cogliano

The injury just happened last night though, he had no knee issues prior to that, did he? So that doesn't explain for his lack of production this season. But, the other nagging injuries (ankles, most recently a sinus infection) most likely played a part.

37 points in 43 games, I'd hardly call that "lack of production". He's certainly had an off year by his standards, and has had a couple of injuries preventing him from getting into a rhythm, but he's still currently the second highest scoring forward, in 10 less games than his nearest rival.

He had been out for a knee issue (and sinus), but its unlikely that the prior injury was part of this - MCL/ACL tears just happen if your knee bends in a way it shouldn't. Unlucky.

One thing for sure, the Pens suddenly became heavy buyers at the trade deadline. That should drive up the price on the available scoring forwards, as one more team enters the mix. They'll have loads of cap room too given Malkin's salary.

Regardless, yes, it's a huge blow to the Pens Cup hopes. Crosby is still a real concern as well, if they have any hope at all of a deep playoff run, they'll need Sid to get healthy & perform like he was prior to the concussion.

Wow. What a blow indeed. Loks like that is Malkin's season, effectively.

Boy does this change tihngs . . . and certainly puts Pittsburgh in the rental trade deadline talk front and center, you'd think. I don't think they even necessarily would need a centre, as they could move up Staal . . . but a top 6 forward for sure.

Tough break, and it certainly explains Malkin's decreased production by his standards.

talk about your serious blow, he's definitely done for the season + postseason - he's probably on track to make it back in time for training camp in September.

Thats about as devastating a loss as a team can have. Crosby still not back either...

Yep, zero chance he's coming back this late into the season. ACL + MCL can be 6 months + recovery. Also zero chance the pens win the east now. Now teams can 100% focus on Sidney and that alone isn't gonna be enough past the first round.
