nah, just 2 different goalies. Both players have the same clause (if picked up on waivers they cannot be sent down to the minors). Emery hasn't played in a year, so for a team to pick him up on waivers and *have* to keep him is taking a risk. Nabokov has played recently, so its much less risky to pick him up.

Looks to me like Emery has a better agent than does Nabokov. hehe
Either that or Anaheim's GM is smarter than Detroit's.

his NHL salary does not represent a pay cut, he'll make 500K at the NHL level.

T-RAV - it gets even better, there was apparently some other wrinkle in the waiver thing. If a team had picked Emery up off waivers, they were obligated to keep him on their NHL roster for full NHL salary, with no ability to send to the minors - only ANA had that option. I'm not sure why.

Emery can afford to take a pay cut to play in the NHL this season.

Ottawa is still on the hook for $562,500 this season and next season, which is a result of them buying out his contract a few seasons ago.

I looks like you need to be a lawyer in order to be a good agent. So many rules and exceptions.

I think the reason for his re-entry exemption is this (someone correct me if I'm wrong, none of the regular news streams have explained it):

Normally players that sign a 2-way deal but have played greater than 320 games at the professional level (NHL, AHL, ECHL) are exempt from re-entry only when the AHL portion of the contract is worth less than 95K. Emery is getting 105K at the AHL level, so based on that contract he would normally have to go through re-entry.

However, there is an additional exemption for players that have a 2 way contract where the AHL level is greater than 95K, but have played less than 40 games on an NHL roster in the previous season, or less than 80 games in the previous 2 seasons. I do think Emery fits that exemption - he has been on an NHL roster for less than 80 games over the last 2 years.

Yes, he has to clear waivers for the Ducks to be able to send him to their AHL club in Syracuse.

Yay, exactly what we need... more Ray Emery!

There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs".
