Posted - 02/27/2011 : 10:15:07 I saw a little thing on CBC news about conncusions in hockey. They are claiming this to be an "epidemic" and a study they made showed in a junior hockey season, conncusions happened in 36% of games, contrary to the 6% reported before. What do you guys think about the whole conncusion issue?

Posted - 02/28/2011 : 05:25:08 The equipment is too hard (the plastic in the elbow pads, shoulder pads, etc), the guys are bigger. That is the major reason, I feel.
The secondary reason is the reporting of concussions, and the medical care taken with the players. These millionaire commodities have a lot more value now, we think about these medical issues differently now, and so more are reported, looked at, etc.
But #1, there has to be a change with the suit of armour that players wear. It's not elbow "pads" anymore . . . it's elbow armour.

Posted - 02/27/2011 : 18:54:56 I wouldn't say they are harmless. The recent Brad Richards concussion is a great example. The elbow from Pahlsson didn't look like much, so who knows what part the hard elbow pads played in it.
But with that said, the problem lies much deeper than just the elbow pads. Honestly I have no idea what the league can do to next to try cut down the frequency which they have been occurring this season. It seemingly took some right steps this off past off season, but the results just haven't been there. |

Posted - 02/27/2011 : 13:59:42 The elbow pads, I think are a big part of it. My elbow pads which I got new a year ago have a lump of hard plastic sticking out that is about an inch long. I would not want to get hit in the face with one.

yeah thats the only thing that I can see that really needs to stay.. and its not even the old ones its the newers ones.. they're just hard plastic. Something needs to be down with elbow pads.. but even then.. if a hit is legal.. theres no elbow involved. It's all arm and shoulder. |

Posted - 02/27/2011 : 10:41:44 Does anyone have a list of the players currently out with concussions? I Ron MacLean read the list last night but I only caught the end of it. I don't think I can remember a time when this many superstars were on the sidelines with concussions, in particular Sidney Crosby, Brad Richards, Marian Gaborik, and Eric Staal. |

Posted - 02/27/2011 : 10:41:16 Guess there are many issues leading to more concussions than we`ve ever seen before.
Firstly, any sign of a concussion by a player now that is diagnosed early means that player is sat. How many concussions were not reported by players years ago ? How many players, played with a concussion in the old days and maybe never even thought anything over it and just shook it off as just having his BELL rung ?...thus BELL meaning, ringing between the ears.
Size diffrential in players now is massive, leading to more elbow to head collisions, sometimes without the taller player even raising his elbow. I think the average height in the NHL now is around 6` 2``.....thought i read somewhere that in 1979 it was at 5` 11`. While watching the last Tor / Buff game i noticed a couple of Buff players were only chest height to some of the games tallest players.
Those hard shelled elbow pads are a major contributor to concussions in my opinion. Didn`t seem to be as many players knocked out in the old days with those soft padded elbow pads, and hockey was dam rough and dirty back then. Players got away with a lot of dirt back then. |

Posted - 02/27/2011 : 10:39:25 Unless players are head hunting and deliberately trying to hurt another player then it is what it is. Fact is most of the players that have concussion troubles lately were legally hit. Helmets are way more advanced now and protect players heads better.. that doesn't need to change. If a hit is leagual then the onous is on the player that got hit for not doing what he has been taught since the time he got into hockey which is to keep your head up. Most of the time its not even the hit that gives them concussion, its when they fall to the ice and hit their heads. Theres nothing more anyone can do to stop people from getting a concussion unless you take hittin gout of the game altogether. The day that happens is the day I lose interest in watching hockey. |
