If you were the GM of a new franchise (or a fantasy draft type of situation) which goalie would you want starting for you taking into consideration the past, present and potential for the goalie in the future and why? |

As far as goalies go, you can't fault ANYONE for choosing Lundqvist. As has been said, he's consistent, he wins, he steals games and he's still got many good years ahead. I totally agree with whoever it was that mentioned he's younger than some of the others (like Luongo) which gives you a few extra years.
Of the young goalies, i'd prob go with Price. From everything we hear, playing in Montreal is a pressure cooker and for this guy to have the season he has had thus far (following a bad one that included a goalie controversy), says to me that he's ready and capable of playing anywhere. I'd like to see a little playoff success first though before i'd choose him as my goalie.

Truthfully, because Fleury has shown some real bad stretches, and has been downgraded for me. He would be right there though, very close.
Quick, I really don't put him in the same category. Maybe it is because I don't know him as well, but . . . I have never seen him steal games like the others I mentioned have.
Rinne, again, in my eyes, does not have the talent of the goalies I mentioned, and has a very solid, underrated defence. He would be second tier, same as Quick, IMHO.
But again, I don't know Rinne and Quick very well, so it could just be a matter of non-exposure.

I know this is all personal opinion so am not challenging anyones choices just have to ask how Halak &Price who really only have two consistent yrs under their belt get the nod over Fleury, Quick or Rinne?

I went with Lundqvist.
Of note for me, he has been exceptional at times in the playoffs, and is at his prime with probably a good 7 years prime playing time left hopefully. Goalies that are to young are just too risky, with little history to go on.
Price, Halak and Backstrom would be my next choices, nearly all of them tied at this point in my mind.

I'd go for Cory Schneider. He's proven he's already a solid netminder and he's only going to get better. If not Schneider, i'd go for Jack Campbell. He's dominated Team Canada at the world juniors and will also be a very good goalie.

Personally, I put a lot of stock into the age of a goalie. There are very few if any goalies in the history of the game that pull a Brodeur and have their best seasons in the mid to late 30's. With that, I agree with my pal Alex in his Miller, Lundvquist, Luongo triad as they are a solid mix of experience with a reasonable amount of gas in the tank. However, Lundqvist JUST turned 29(meaning like a week ago), where at Luongo hit's 32 in less than a month and Miller hits 31 in the summer.
Personally, not only do I think Lundqvist is the most consistant player of the three but I get at least 3 years more milage out of Lundqvist than the other 2.
Ya, I take Lundqvist. He's a workhorse playing 70+ games in 4 of his 5 seasons, he is a performer with better than .910 save % every season and never worse than 2.45 GAA, and he is consistant and never had less than a 30 win season regardless of his team making the playoffs or not.

yep, Miller should be on that list for sure - for me its a 3-way tie with Lundqvist, Miller, Luongo. All 3 of them have 5 or more years of consistent high-level performance and very good records while starting 60 or more games per year. All of them are around 30, which means they're mature enough to know how to play under pressure but young enough to have 6-8 years of high-calibre performance left in them. Good enough to build a team around. Although none have gone past round 2 in the playoffs, all have had some international successes.
As FER says though, if you're looking for longer term than 8 years, you'd go a different direction. Of the 3 or 4 bright young goaltending stars (Quick, Howard, Price are the ones I look at), I'd go with Quick. |

I'd have to go with Cam Ward. Definatley not gonna post superstar stats as his team isnt really team defense first. But if you watch this guy play he almost always gives his team a chance to win. I'd have no problem with Miller or Price on this list. Lundqvist, Bryzgalov even.
What I'm really hoping for is Anderson does next year for the Sens what he did for Colorado last year. Cant tell you how much it meant to that Colorado team during a rebuild last year to have a steady goalie for the development of that team. I have no idea why Colorado tanked it mid season, and why they would blame it on the goalie, but you can see it when Anderson plays for the Sens. He gives them the chance to win every night whether they deserve it or not. |

As a goalie to start my franchise around for the here and now as well as the next 5-8 yrs i select Marc Andre Fleury barely over Quick & Rinne. At 26 he is approaching the prime of his career and is now a proven winner while not allowing as many soft goals as he once did. He has the consistent ability to steal a game and keep the pens in there. I also believe no other goalie is more agile and has the ability to make game changing saves as frequently as he does. I think there are about 10 goalies that you can make an arguement for starting a team around i simply chose the youngest who has developed the most over the last couple of yrs and whom has experience in the big game.

Yup I agree with Lundqvist.
Ryan Miller should be on that list (he's top 5 in my opinion) Miller would be a close second. |

By the standards you clarified,(thank you), I would go with Henrik Lundqvist. I think at 29, he's got enough years at a high level left that would attract free agents, and he is a proven commodity.
For longer term planning, I would agree with Price choice though. |

The way I saw it, a GM could have chosen a solid, proven goalie to win immediately, and to attract other ''star players'' to join his team through free agency. Also, a team might want a veteran presence at first to help a young goaltender develop and take some pressure off him at first like Detroit did with Howard. |

Not quite so obvious if you leave choices like Brodeur and Kiprusoff on the list. Hard to imagine building a franchise forward with a 38 and 34 year old goaltender.
Could you clarify please?

I think I would give Price a shot. He has a good pedigree, has fought through adversity, is playing the best hockey of his career and still has room/time to get better. |
