Given all the talk about concussions / dirty hits / headshots - I thought I'd post this from the paper this morning. It didn't seem to belong anywhere else (i.e. the Pacioretty thread or the "What'll it take" thread) so I made a new topic.

Anyhow, Wayne Scanlan looks at the spate of concussions (declared and undeclared - for example Hiller's "fatigue and vertigo" is listed as a "concussion" even though the team never used the term). In any case, the author uses the concussion numbers from "The Concussion Blog" by Dustin FInk.

Here's the "All-concussion" team: (the assumption is all are playing at there "pre-concussion" levels. For those that are still out, may they have a speedy recovery.

Centre: Sidney Crosby, Brad Richards, Marc Savard, David Krejci, John Tavares, Bryan Little.

Left wing: Johan Franzen, Andy McDonald, David Perron, Max Pacioretty, Rene Bourque.

Right wing: Marian Gaborik, Ales Hemsky, Jason Pominville, Mike Knuble.

Defence: Drew Doughty, Mike Green, Brad Stuart, Toni Lydman, Dan Hamhuis, Andrej Meszaros, Nick Schultz

Goal: Jonas Hiller, Ondrej Pavelec

Rest of the article is here > http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/Introducing+hockey+Concussion+Team/4419710/story.html

That's a pretty solid team, certainly it would be a contender. It's scary to think how many players have been sidelined by concussions this year.

The NHL HAS to do something about this.

How do you know it has nothing to do with his injury Mario ?
Guest7742 Posted - 03/12/2011 : 14:55:44
Crosby would get cut from the team

Just heard this today, Perron is confirmed to be out for the rest of the year with his conncusion.

Bring back the Jets!

Duke are you serious???

It's been unanimous since his performance in first 10 games that Reimer is the leafs first choice for the future. Nobody, misses one game from a concussion, he may of gotten a stiff neck or a neck strain from the contact. Lets be real its not like their is a Corey Schneider, Bernier or Lindback behind Reimer threatening to take his job. Gustavsoon has had his chance and may get it again but until Reimer sh**s the bed Reimer is the leafs guy and will continue to be.

The fact that he is now allowing more goals per game has to do with the fact that teams realize he goes down way to early, nothing to do with an injury. Not to mention with the impact he has on the D core there is no way the leafs would risk the kids future; throw him back in net with a serious injury such as a concussion

In youth we learn; in age we understand

You can add Dave Bolland to that list too. He recently received a dirty cheap shot elbow to the head from Tampa Bay's Pavel Kubina.

I wouldn`t be so sure about Reimer guest, that was a very nasty knee to head collision and at top speed. Reimer could not continue to play that night, he had to leave the ice.

Reimer seems to be letting in some questionable goals since the hit, which he definitely did not before the hit. Who knows what he is feeling. You are talking about a young kid who has an opportunity that may not be there anymore if he misses a long stretch of playing time. If he were to sit and the Monster gets hot...well, who knows if he will get his spot back.

Who knows what players play through some times just to keep their spot in the pecking order. It`s not like he is a H. Lundquist who will definitely have his spot back as the number 1 guy as soon as he comes back from an injury.

REIMER DIDN'T GET A CONCSUSION.. love how people just add people to a list of criteria that don't fit the criteria and people just accept it.

Wow Spade, at first i thought, why ruin (with the salaries) a good thread / idea, but really, with the salaries, you've just empahsized how bad the situation really is!

Well done, and thanks.

The league surely will look closer at this situation the longer Sidney Crosby is out!

Slozo - for sure (I basically went with what he said in the article) - that would be a pretty awesome team.

Awesome One - Absolutely, there's definitely something wrong with the picture here.

Here's the cap breakdown (because I've got the time). I used the figures from capgeek:

1st: Franzen (3.95) - Crosby (8.7) - Gaborik (7.5) = 20.15 M
2nd: Tavares (3.75) - B.Richards (7.8) - Pominville (5.3) = 16.85 M
3rd: R. Bourque (3.33)- Savard (4.0) - Hemsky (4.1) = 11.43 M
4th: Perron (2.15) - Drury (7.05) - Knuble (2.8) = 12.00 M

D pairings:
Green (5.25) - Doughty (3.475) = 8.725 M
Stuart (3.75) - Hamhuis (4.5) = 8.25 M
Schultz (3.5) - Meszaros (4.00) = 7.5 M

Goalies:
Hiller (4.5) - Pavelec (1.15) = 5.65

NHL Salary Cap: 59.4 mil

Salary for "All-Concussion Team:

Forwards: 60.43 Million
Defence: 24.475 Million
Goalies: 5.65 Million
Total: 90.55 Million

That's a scary amount of money (and talent) that's been sidelined to one extent or another this season. Not to mention the rest of the guys who aren't on the "team."

When you can make a team like that out of concussed guys, you know that somethings wrong!

The NHL has to do something!

There was once a license plate in Toronto that abbreviated "Go Leafs" it read "Golfs".

Jonas Hiller might have something to say about that goalie tandem?

But yes, def a championship calibre team!

Polishexpress - i'm just going with the list posted in the article. He was going by "The Concussion Blog's" list that includes 72 players > 70 here > http://bit.ly/hSWnBD + 2 more (Theo Peckham and Steven Kampfer) here > http://bit.ly/hq99QH

Scanlan explains in the article that the has made some logical leaps in certain cases where teams haven't outright said "concussion" and instead used "upper body injury" or other terms.

I'm just the messenger. :)

I really don't think that the goalies should be grouped in with concussions: Jonas Hiller has vertigo, and he himself said that he doesn't know the cause of his vertigo symptoms, it may have been a couple pucks to the head, but there is no way to guarantee. Here is ESPN's take on it, and they actually interviewed Hiller: http://sports.espn.go.com/los-angeles/nhl/news/story?id=6201649

Pavelec? Really? He got a concussion because he fell to the ice due to fainting, away from the play.

The goalies don't deserve to be on that list at all.

I could put a goalie on your list: James Reimer, he got hit with a knee in a game, but came back the next game.

Even with their concussion they would probably still beat Colorado
