With about 8 minutes to go in the 3rd period in last night's game (and with San Jose leading the Canucks 2-1), Craig Simpson made the comment on HNIC that the Canucks fans were too quiet. He went further to say that the fans can be a factor sometimes, oftentimes "lifting a team and inspiring a team to elevate their level of play."

I've heard this comment from players a number of times, and while it would be a stretch to suggest that fans have any significant role in what takes place on the ice, the comments are worth noting.

I noticed the same thing last night. The Canucks fans were relatively quiet, at least until they scored to tie things up with 13 seconds to go.

I was watching this game with a group of people, all who were cheering for the Canucks, and we noticed the same thing – the fans were a bit on the quiet side. (These were mostly Oiler fans who have now latched onto the Canucks – some because they're the only Canadian team left, or some like me, who admire the Canucks for their play.)

Maybe the lack of fan noise stems from a fan base who wants to hold off on the party until they get to the dance? The fans were definitely boisterous after the game. And I'm betting the level of fan noise will increase in the finals. (BTW – is it "final" or "finals?" There's only one final after all!)

One other comment about fan noise. What's with banging on the glass? I noticed fans doing it on both sides of the rink, and when players from either team skated by, and sometimes, when the officials skated by.

I like noisy buildings (and fans making lots of noise), but I don't get the banging on the glass? Or the fans who turn and wave when they know the camera's directed to their end of the ice. To each their own I guess, but when I guy (it's never a girl) stands up to wave at the camera while the play's going on (and with their cell phone in hand), I kinda think they're lacking attention or they were malnourished as a child. Come on – is that your "two seconds of fame?"

So here's hoping for a great Stanley Cup Final (singular) with lots of fan noise (no banging on the glass), and for the Canucks to win the Cup! While they may not be "Canada's team" to everyone, there are lots of Canadian fans cheering for them, and I'm guessing that this will only increase regardless of who they meet in the next round!

well, there was nothing quiet about game 1 - not only the 18,000 fans in the stadium, but the est 40,000 additional in the downtown core, Vancouver went nuts!

Saturday is supposed to be sunny and low-20's, they're predicting 80-100,000 into the downtown core to see the game in various outdoor venues with bigscreens, bars, and around the stadium. Its gonna be a crazy one if they win.

cant argue with that
The audience is quiet most likely because buisness men are buying tickets to try and build relations with other buisnesses by going to the game with them.
Religions people are smart just to point out, Osama Bin Laden

Don't hate me because i'm Beautiful

Yes indeed, those are staggering odds to say the least.

That's as hard to imagine as having your forward momentum stopped suddenly and forcefully, but yet your head mysteriously snaps backwards instead, without any contact to it.....insurmountable odds for sure. I think we have a couple of cases for Scully and Mulder to check out here!!

Wow! That may also be your popularity rating about now.

The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2012.

I found it surprising too, that the Canucks fans were so quiet. In fact, before Craig Simpson said so, the people I watched the game with said the same thing.

Personally, I find it a ridiculous excuse to say "everyone's holding their collective breath." (Note: not a personal attack, just an opinion!)

Now, if you are watching TV, hold your breath, nobody on the ice hears you anyway, but if you go to a playoff game, you better cheer your head off for your team.

What kind of fan are you if you can't muster yourself to cheer when your team needs you most? Even if its 3-0, I'd be cheering my head off to try to get my team going.

As to it being "too hard" to watch and cheer at the same time, then I'm sure nobody eats or drinks while they are watching the game either?

It's hard to compare, unless like nuxfan, you've been to another rink for such a big game!

Sure, ticket prices are high, but i don't buy all this corporate crap about how it's all "suits" going to the games, etc, etc. I know a ton of fans, myself included, who've been going to a few of the games! Have a look at the crowd when it's shown, i certainly don't see a bunch of CEO's and Exec's in their Armani suits and all!

I too see it as a collective breath hold as Beans stated! I was doing the same at home last night on my couch thinking "darn, we're blowing another chance to close out a team and not have to travel back to their city"!

As for the glass bangers, camera wavers, etc, i could really care less! At least the guys banging the glass are watching the game?

I agree with Mario in that through the last few games, many Canuck fans were holding their collective breath. Hard to cheer when your team is being outplayed and outchanced by a wide margin.

That being said, those fans certainly made up for it after the goal forcing OT and even more when Bieksa scored to win the series.

I don't see much of anything wrong with the Canuck fans. I don't like'em, but there is nothing wrong with how they are reacting to their team.

why didn't he lead by example and get up himself and start cheering for the canucks...he as well as the rest of his announce crew were obviously pulling for the canucks

The fan noise at Rogers arena comes and goes. I don't get the feeling that it is abnormally quiet though - most fans are simply watching the game. Its hard to be yelling and screaming and banging on the glass, and actually watching the game at the same time.

I was in SJ for game 4 on Sunday, and the Shark Tank is reputed to be one of the loudest arena's in the NHL. I found almost no difference in the crowd noise during the game from that in VAN, although they are very loud when a goal is scored.

Just a thought, but do you guys think its because
Canucks playoff ticket prices are so ridiculously high that its driven out most of the "true" fans, the ones who got really loud during the regular season?

I know a lot of people who would be screaming and cheering for the full 60(+) minutes, but none of those would spend half their paycheck to attend...

WOW! I get what you are saying, but your looking way to hard into this. As a nux fan how does one do nothing else but hang on for dear life when their team was outshot in the last two games by close to a 3-1 margin? Yes fans should cheer and get amped up about their team, but if you where a fan of a boxer who has been destroyed the first 11 rds are you still going to be jumping off the edge of your seat? or sitting back with the belief that he has one more rd & that he can still get the knockout ala Vancouver could still score, but it was looking more unlikely the further into the third they got; much like a 12th rd knockout.

How bout we focus on the series that was rather then how the fans where for 10+ minutes after watching their goalie get used for target practice the previous 49+

Every journey begins with a single step.
