Posted - 06/04/2011 : 11:36:18 The drive to 13,000 has been reached!!!! True North sold the remaining 6000 approx. season tickets in 17 minutes!!!!!! There are also 7000 people on a waiting list for season tickets. All the people who said Winnipeggers couldn't afford to pay the NHL price ticket must be trying to take their foot out of their mouth. Looks like Winnipeg will be a sell-out for the next 5 years atleast. |

Posted - 06/08/2011 : 01:43:40 Sure, Halifax works... it may not have the population base, but I'm sure there's enough fan support from all over the Atlantic provinces.... it'll never happen, but it's nice to dream. The Halifax Explosions maybe. lol. or not. |

Posted - 06/06/2011 : 20:30:46 I'm absolutely thrilled with Winnipeg's showing of support. Simply amazed!
I am confident that the same support would happen in Quebec or Hamilton/G.T.A. or Halifax as well. To put this into perspective: Even North Bay or St.John's or Regina would sell several thousand season tickets....so why wouldn't Quebec or Winnipeg or Hamilton be able to sell 13k?
Here's a comparison: Florida (which I hardly believe averaged 11k fans per game this season) used to hold "job fairs" where job-seekers paid about $25 enter.. With this fee they received a complimentary upper bowl ticket to a game that night. The job fair itself was held in the arena concourse the day of the game, and the companies that put up booths for seeking employees were simply the advertisers and business partners and suite-holders of the team.
Basically what I'm saying is this: If there are continual, ongoing, struggles at the gate by a team/market, then relocation needs to be visited. And ripe prospect markets include numerous cities and markets in Canada... American network ratings be damned!

Congrats to Winnipeg. That's impressive. But let's see how they hold up if the team loses for a couple years. It's easier when moods are positive.
But you have to take into context that this 7 thousand long waiting list has been compiled in a FEW DAYS. That is the part that is impressive, and when given a solid amount of time, would easily compare to the longest waiting lists in the league, I'd think.
No one would be able to touch the Leafs, and then Canadiens, I am sure - but they have had many decades to continue to compile it. Vancouver's may be bigger now, but given time, the smaller city of Winnipeg looks to beat them out.
That is what impressed me - the incredibly short amount of time that waiting list was formed in.

There are three teams in close proximity in the New York area (NYI, Rangers and the Flyers), so why not two teams in the Toronto area?
The 3 teams close to NY are actually Rangers, Islanders and Devils (NJ plays in Newark, which is actually a suburb of New York City located on the NJ/NY border). PHI is about an hour away by train, but you could argue that they are a 4th team in the region.
New York City, Long Island, NJ, and Phili have a combined population equal to nearly all of Canada, so one would think they should be capable of supporting 4 teams. |

Posted - 06/05/2011 : 22:33:26 I'm not even a Winnipeg fan, but I'm super hyped to have another Canadian team back in the picture. I agree, Quebec City will probably be the next city to get a team... not so sure about another Ontario team though... EASTERN CANADA NEEDS A TEAM!!!! |

Posted - 06/05/2011 : 21:23:52 All Canadian teams have great fan support. I wonder what the waiting lists are like in Nashville, Florida or Phoenix? Or even in Long Island or Dallas? Just kidding of course - these teams don't have waiting lists for tickets.
It's actually possible that we may see an NHL with 8 or 9 Canadian teams in the next few years. I think Quebec City is next, and thereafter, a southern based Ontario team (probably Hamilton) to follow. If not Hamilton, why not another Toronto area team? There are three teams in close proximity in the New York area (NYI, Rangers and the Flyers), so why not two teams in the Toronto area? Yeah, I know the Leafs (and Buffalo too) would not be in favour, but that's their problem. The southern Ontario market can easily support two NHL teams, much better than at least 4-5 current teams in the NHL.
Getting back to the original posting, good for Winnipeg. No surprise to me that they sold out so quickly! |

That is pretty crazy, 7 thousand on a waiting list for season tickets? I would guess only Toronto can boast of a higher number than that.
I would be surprised if all of TOR, MTL, and VAN were not that high (perhaps CGY and EDM too?). I know VAN has something like an est. 8-14 year waiting list and is about 12K long (a friend of mine just got on it) and with a renewal rate of 98%+, it doesn't move very quickly.
Still, very good support in WIN, as expected really - did anyone think they'd have a hard time selling tickets? |

Posted - 06/05/2011 : 08:26:20 Absolutely amazed to read 17 minutes to sell out!! I guess they could be compared to U2 or any other huge rock band now!! can't wait to see what name they choose.
Atlanta had a fairly good season last year I think they should be all right especially playing in Canada to a packed Arena of crazy jet fans!!
Love it!! |

Posted - 06/04/2011 : 23:09:25 Hmm. Amazing, really.
I knew they'd be excited and would sell out the season tickets easy enough . . . but not THAT easy. That is pretty crazy, 7 thousand on a waiting list for season tickets? I would guess only Toronto can boast of a higher number than that.
Good for them, and welcome back!

Posted - 06/04/2011 : 12:14:31 So, don't they owe us a team name now? Thought i heard them say they'd announce what they were going to call the team once the season ticket sales reached 13,000.
Bring it on Mannitoba Thrashing Coyote Moose Jets!!!
Hey, that's not bad......okay, a little long. |
