TSN reported that Jaromir Jagr's agent has put out feelers to 5 NHL teams to see if they would be interested in the Mr. Jagr's services for next season. Reportedly, these teams are Detroit, Pittsburgh, Washington, New York, and Montreal.

Jagr will turn 40 through next season and is a 3 years removed from the NHL but has been consistently playing in the KHL as well as the Olympics and the World Championships. His last 3 NHL seasons were points productions of 71, 96, and 123 points. He has been a PPG player(or close enough) in his time in Russia and has played well in the other International he has participated in. When looking at the performance of guys like Selanne, Roloson, and Recchi there is an argument for the 40-something NHL player still having legitimate value to a team.

The question at had is does Jagr still have the chops to play in the NHL and if so, what team would he be best suited to join/would be most interested in having him??

The latest news on NHL.com is that Jagr's agent is talking to three teams about a deal with Jagr: Pittsburgh, Detroit and Montreal. Pittsburgh and Detroit make sense to me, but Montreal?

Pittsburgh seems to be the most logical landing spot, especially with the comments made by Jagr's agent Peter Svoboda, "This is obviously a tough decision for Jaromir. His heart is in Pittsburgh."

Penguins GM Ray Shero is equally as interested, and made the following comments: "He was an icon in Pittsburgh. We'd like to see him finish his career here."

So what's the stumbling block in getting a deal done? Jagr's heart is apparently in Pittsburgh, and the Penguins definitely want him. The Penguins have reportedly offered Jagr a one-year deal for $2 million, so is it money? Jagr has made more money than any other professional hockey player in history, with earnings over $100 million in his pro career.

I know it's a business, but at some point does a player not just go with his heart? $2 million is decent money for Jagr. Is he going to get substantially more from the Wings, Habs or any other team? And does he really want to play somewhere else? We will soon find out!

I thought before Jagr's possible return that Pittsburgh would be a force next year. with the return of their superstars should be a strong contender for the cup. Would be fun to see him back home with Mario!!

I'm reading that the offer is for one year at 2 million.

Thanks Beans!

As a die hard Pen's fan i'm slightly torn on maybe getting Jagr back. I really like the direction Bylsma has the team headed, strong defensively with a balanced offensive. If Jagr does not provide at close to his normal pace then he'll be a defensive liability & taking ice time away from guys like Kunitz, Dupuis, Talbot & Kennedy who bring it everynight.

My heart says Jagr will come back & shine with Crosby, My head tells me him & Malkin on the ice at the same time will be a defensive nightmare.

Every journey begins with a single step.

As a hockey fan I hope he signs in Pittsburgh. It would be awesome to watch Crosby, Malkin and Jagr on the powerplay.

I think that's about it. Here is the TSN report. A 1 yr offer was made, finacials not disclosed, decision should come some time today.

I think he will go to Pittsburgh. For him to have the chance to be with a contender, play with Crosby and\or Malkin, plus he said he loves the city and his good friend Lemieux is the owner.

Yup Pittsburgh is the perfect fit.
nuxfan Posted - 06/21/2011 : 09:14:16
the raised salary cap certainly works in PIT's favour here - they now have about 7.5M to sign 5 guys, and the only one of note is Tyler Kennedy who is going to get a raise from his 725K last year. They could probably pay Jagr 2M or so and still field a team.

The 1 year deal is also a good idea, as PIT have Neal and Niskanen to sign next summer, and they're going to be bigger signings.

According to his agent Ray Shero, Jagr has been in talks with the Penguins about possibly signing a one year deal.

He wouldn't be a bad fit there, perhaps . . . but it's too early to tell I guess, as we haven't seen him play in a long time. It is possible that he is a bust, but going by his former skill level, I think he'd probably still make a solid contribution for the Pens.

If money talks then the Rangers will be the unanimous winner, but i honestly see no other reason for Jagr coming back to the nhl then to win a cup.

If that is indeed the cs a healthy Caps or Pens would have to be the frontrunners.

I don't see Detroit picking him up. Just don't see it.
But between Washington, New York Rangers, and Montreal, they are all interesting options.

Tell you the truth, if I had to guess, I bet it'll be the Rangers. They are the team that most needs his offence, and he has played there and done well before. He knows and has played with some of those guys, and he should soften the load for Gaborik and perhaps create more space for him by being on the second line, but who knows?

Really hard to tell, other than that Jagr put up a 71 point season with the Rangers in 07/08. Been a while since then, and even with Jagr being in solid game shape and playing very well in the KHL . . . we can't expect anything better than 70 points realistically - at least from a pragmatic poolie standpoint. A 55, 60 point effort might be more realistic, and that's giving Jagr tons of credit for his top notch skill set.

He'd be a good boost to the Rangers offence in the end, aand I think he might do well there, on a team that will always be in the playoff mix with a healthy Lundqvist in net.

for the same reasons (cap space/ probably not that interested) i really can't see jagz goin back to pittsburgh or washington.
the rangers makes sense to me with the rumours of them buying out several players to make cap space for richards why not cut a little more excess fat and give jagr the most money any of these 5 teams would have to offer.
detroit will only sign him for cheap. nonetheless i could see him taking a cut ... he'd fit in with the aged lineup and have a legit chance to win the cup.
montreal is the wild card. of all these teams this one puzzles me the most since jagr really has no past with montreal.
i would have thought the move from khl to nhl was about money but based on the teams jagr is targetting i would have to say that is not true
Pasty7 Posted - 06/17/2011 : 22:05:58
i hear Montreal was on the list really because he loves playing with Plekanec, Now Cammalleri Plekanec Jagr would make a tremdous line, Jagr could afford to floa t a bit with the 2 under 30 players doing most of the backchecking,, but i really don't see it because jagr is not Martin's type of player

Not sure of his reasonings, but in the original post, Beans mentioned he's interested in 5 teams, TB not being one of them.

I think if he plays anywhere it will be Detroit ...a one year deal thats all, who wants to give a 40 year old any more than that ?

Bet there are some teams out there who will give Jagr a 5 million - one year contract.....time will tell

Goligoski? I'm pretty sure you mean Letang Goligoski is in Dallas.

You miss 100 percent of the shots you don't take Wayne Gretzky

My bad, it should have said Letang.

I think Pitt would be foolish not to move a few players around to get their hands on Jagr. He would fit there so well and one would think that would make them high contenders for the Cup during the 2nd coming of the Jagr years.

But you are right Nux, Pitt has cap issues to solve before they could make the move.

Detroit = H*** NO!!

Detroit may have the cap space, but Detroit never picks up players like Jagr. He simply does not fit into their system & team make up. Jagr is a phenomenal offensive talent, but Detroit is only going to spend 3 million on a player they can rely on in both ends of the ice (Hossa) & that is not who Jagr is.

I don't think it would cost $3million a season. I think he just wants to come back and give it another run to win. I would things $2 million will make it happen.

The problem with PIT is they are the least able to sign him - they're in a woeful cap situation, with only 2.4M to sign 4 players for next year, and one of them is Kennedy. And the year after that they have to worry about Neal as an RFA. It would be irresponsible of PIT to sign Jagr at the risk of losing other players later.

if he gets an offer for 2M, I could see one of the 5 teams offering more to get him, and would not be surprised to see him get 3M or perhaps a bit more - which is still good value for a player capable of 60+ points. DET has loads of cap space (compared to the others mentioned), and therefore have the ability to "overpay" for Jagr.

If he's coming back, I see DET making a move.

I can see Jagr still being a very valuable 2nd line player, top line PP guy. I think Pitt, if healthy, would be sick with a group of Crosby, Jagr, Malkin, and Neal in their top 6 forwards. Geez, think about those 4 guys with GoligoskiLetang on the PP??

I'm with Mario, I would love to see him in Pitt. Although, I think he's close to a 50-60 point guys than a 70 point guy.
Mario 66 Posted - 06/17/2011 : 08:41:11
I'm praying the Pens pick him up & bring him back home. Love to see Crosby & Jagr on line one with Malkin & Staal on line two. I'm salavating already and smelling the Cup lol.

If Jagr goes to Pit or Det & remains healthy he'll be a 30g 70 point guy

Every journey begins with a single step.
nuxfan Posted - 06/17/2011 : 08:36:26
He probably has the chops - although anyone looking for the 50g/100pt Jagr from 5 years ago is likely to be sorely disappointed. I think any of the teams mentioned would take a chance on him - if he's kept himself in shape there is no reason why he should not be able to perform as other older players you mentioned.

The sticking point will be how much money he's looking for. His KHL contract was at 5M/year, which I doubt he would command in the NHL, but lets say he can get 3M a year for 2 years. That puts PIT out of the running, and likely NYR if they're going to pursue Richards. DET would probably be a good fit for him, and would give him an excellent chance to win. I don't think he's the type of player that either MTL or WSH need.
