This is an interesting move... New Jersey has filed for arbitration against Parise. I'm guessing that this is their way around an unfortunate cap situation where they have some "undesirable" players on their payroll that expire in a year - if they can get away with paying Parise close to what he made last year for a year (using his extended injury as a reason for keeping salary low), and then sign him to a longer term deal starting in 2012/13 for market value, it would be a perfect situation.

A player can only be taken to arbitration by their team once in their career, and once done they get an automatic 1 year deal followed by UFA.

Any thoughts on how this might turn out? I wonder how Parise feels about it...

NSH has filed for arbitration with Weber now, same reason. Probably not too far away from LA doing the same with Doughty.

Scary stuff for the Dev's. They could lose him next summer leaving Kovalchuk as their "big gun" and depending which Kovalchuk shows up, that could be trouble. They also have a goaltender who's not getting any younger and will need to be replaced soon! Tough times ahead i'd say?

If they are that far off, maybe it was their only choice?

hm. Perhaps this is nothing more than NJ protecting its interests, apparently the two sides are very very far apart... some interesting tidbits about team-filed arbitration:

- this move means that Parise cannot receive any offer sheets on July 1, he is fully protected as a NJ asset.
- the decision will be for 1 year only, and Parise will be UFA next summer.
- a team cannot walk away from the arbitration decision if they take the player to arbitration. Depending on the outcome, this could have a serious impact on NJD cap situation.

So he is guaranteed to be a Devil next year should the hearing happen. But from a few articles I read about it, he does not seem pleased that things have turned out this way, and if it should go to arbitration, speculation is high that it would sour his relationship with NJ and he'd explore other options next summer.

I don't recall the last time a team took a player to arbitration...
