Posted - 06/22/2011 : 16:54:41 **PLEASE NOTE........ IF you plan on watching the awards tonight, stop reading now as there are winners listed in the following........***
Not sure how many people are getting to see this live (prob most easterners?) but out west here, it was a 4pm start and they're not televising it till 8pm for some reason??? I was looking for the early feed to PVR it and watch it when i got home but couldn't find it except for the Ottawa station which i don't subscribe to?
What's wrong with this world? My wife seems to have no problem getting the early feed on "Jersey Shores" and "The Bachelorette", yet i can't get the darn NHL awards???
Just read that Lidstrom won the Norris which comes as a big shock to me! Well, a big shock isn't really accurate i guess but imo, he's won it on reputation this season. I have to wonder how many voters figured this was it, he was gonna hang'em up and voted for him partially because of that? I know he's still a helluva dman and had a great offensive year, but he was a -2 on a pretty darn good team. Weber got burned as far as i'm concerned.
Others winner, which were not surprising to me was Kesler for the Selke and Bylsma for the Jack Adams. More awards to come. |

Posted - 06/23/2011 : 13:27:31 I love combing through the voting breakdowns every year because it is just sooo darn interesting!!
Here are some observations:
Norris: I agree with Beans that Lidstrom earned this. Simply look at the stats. But boy was it close!!! Only 9 voting points separating them - that's less than the value of 1 single first place vote! Or it's the combined value of a 5th, a 4th and a 3rd place vote.
Here's the surprising part: Lidstrom received 117 total votes, while Weber received 99 total votes. This means that at least 18 voters left Weber off of their Top Five altogether! A little surprising to say the least. For the record, Chara was included on 111 ballots, and 4th place Visnovsky was on 113 Top 5 Lists.
Also, Matt Carle and Chris Pronger both received a 2nd place vote, while Philadelphia had the defenders represented (3) with Meszaros receiving a 5th place vote in there somewhere.
Only 20 different players received votes at all.
Would very many of us here list Matt Carle in our personal Top 20 D-men of the entire season, let alone a runner up vote?
Hart: Winner Corey Perry was included on 124 ballots altogether, whilst 121 had Daniel Sedin in their Top 5. This means at least 3 voters left Daniel off of their Top 5 ballot altogether. Sedin's Canucks finished a full 10 points ahead of the 2nd place Washington Capitals and Perry's Ducks finished tied for 9th in the league with Phoenix and Nashville, 4 pts ahead of non-playoff qualifying Dallas Stars.
Also, Sidney Crosby received a 3rd place vote and Alex Ovechkin didn't receive any top 3 votes at all.
Vezina: Only 10 different goalies received "Top 3" considerations on the 30 GM's ballots. Astonishingly, Tim Thomas was left off of 4 ballots altogether as was Pekka Rinne (both received 26 total votes). No-one else was even close to these 2 as Luongo was only on 13 total ballots (three 1st place votes) and Lundqvist was only on 9 total ballots.
Calder: Surprisingly, 3 voters had John Carlsson as the best rookie while at least 1 voter left Skinner out of the top 5 altogether! Wow!
Jack Adams: The strangest thing here is that 17 different coaches received voting points while there are only 30 teams in the league. 9 different coaches received a first place nod. Also, judging by the total number of votes, there were 70 voting members of the NHL Broadcaster's Association.
Lady Byng: 61 different players received votes which is no surprise as the criteria of this award isn't as obvious or clear cut as others. It also seems at times that some years this award is used as a pat on the back for other reasons other than it's apparent intended purpose. Furthermore, it could be argued that this award is open to some "homerism" as the voters regularly see their hometown players much more often than any other teams thus leaving them open to believe moreso in the gentlemanly conduct of all of their own players. A quick glance shows at least 3 goalies receiving votes (James Reimer actually finished 22nd among the 61 players noted!). Also, there are a few players listed that missed significant time as well. And finally, Trevor Lewis received a Lady Byng vote in there?? If the award is defined as going to the player that shows the "best type of sportsmanship and gentlemanly conduct combined with a high standard of playing ability" , then why did this first year player (rookie, therefore) not receive at least one single Calder vote from the very PHWA member that gave him this vote??? Yes, voters use this award to reward in other ways, don't they?? It would be funny if there was a voting stipulation somewhere stating that to vote for a rookie in Byng voting means that same writer had to have an equal vote for that same player in Calder voting as well.
Selke: 63 different players receiving votes. Biggest surprise? Grabner getting a 1st place vote! Again, that voter better have voted Grabner 1st in Calder considerations as well. |

Posted - 06/23/2011 : 10:29:36 i know it is absurd to even suggest ... but here it goes: sidney crosby didn't deserve to win the mvp trophy but he was the most valuable player in the league... or maybe it was steckel/hedman for taking him out |

Posted - 06/23/2011 : 10:19:53 Slozo - you make some good points, but just like in law, there's the details in the agreement, and the spirit of the agreement.
Same thing when voting for the league's MVP. I know the definition too (just like the hockey writers who vote), and I'm more in line with their thinking, not yours.
Aside from the two voters who selected Price for the Hart (I suspect both voters reside in Montreal), you stand alone with your selection.
No disrespect. In fact, I understand your logic, and it doesn't matter if everyone (or nearly everyone) who has earned a vote disagrees with you. This is an opinion site, and everyone's opinion should be respected. |

Posted - 06/23/2011 : 07:37:47 Lidstrom was the winner this year because he had a Norris winning season period. Age doesn't come in to play IMO.Weber was good but not better than Liddy!
He belongs in the company that 7 wins places him full value! |

you make it sound like Perry didn't deserve to win. he has the stats to back it up, and was probably the main reason Anaheim finished 4th in the West. take him away from that team and the Ducks aren't nearly as good. probably don't even make the playoffs. |

Posted - 06/23/2011 : 04:46:33 First off, Guest 1489? You must have a different definition of MVP - MOST VALUABLE PLAYER - than I do to make the outrageous statement you did about the players you listed getting one vote.
Personally, if I was voting, and going by the NHL criteria, I would have voted 1) Price, then 2) Thomas and then St. Louis in third.
I do not like Montreal. I'd prefer if there was no hockey team in Tampa Bay. I could care less about Boston. That's just the way I would have voted, as a thinking, logical fan.
I actually think it's a bit bogus, the MVP award, in that any position player can win it . . . because realistically, it should be a goalie almost every year, as they have by far the greatest influence on games. Absent a totally dominant year by a superstar forward (say, if Crosby had played the whole year and won the scoring race by 50 points), it really should be a goalie every year who wins this.
Jack Adams They got it right, and unfortunately for Barry Trotz, Bylsma deserved it this year with absolutely outstanding coaching to keep Pittsburgh in relatively the same position missing the premier player in the league, and a top 5 talent in the league. It was a virtuoso performance.
Vezina I would have voted Price myself, without placing too much emphasis on the record save percentage Thomas posted. Simply because of Rask last year - an average goalie at best, IMHO - not being that far off. That being said, it would have been real close for me, so no big deal for Thomas to win it over Price, but I thought it should have been closer voting between the two, with Lundqvist right behind, in almost a three way tie. Instead, they had Rinne up there - playing behind a great defence, a stifling trap system. Rinne is a good goalie, don't get me wrong - but not as good as any of the above mentioned, sorry.
Calder I would have had a dead heat between Subban and Skinner, myself, with Skinner perhaps winning in the end. Instead, as usual, the d-man gets left in the dust. Such is the way, but I am not unhappy with the result here.
Norris I am not going to repeat myself too much, but Chara should not have been even included in the top three, and Weber should have won. Lidstrom won this on reputation, agree with WIllus. He had a very fine season for an old man, and kudos for that - so just give him the Lady Byng and be done with it. Instead, you steal the award from the top d-man of the year, and that's just wrong.
Selke Not a bad result, but really, it should have been much closer to a three way tie here - all are very deserving.

Posted - 06/22/2011 : 22:25:33 I'm surprised at how handily Kesler won the Selke - 2.5x more 1st place votes than Toews. I thought he'd win it, but I thought it would be closer, the two had very comparable years.
I was also surprised to see that John Carlson got more 1st place votes than Subban for the Calder. And Reimer with 3 votes, really? He played less than half the season!
Norris trophy voting was very close for the top 3. |

Posted - 06/22/2011 : 22:17:08 According to the stats, the following players had one vote as the league's MVP:
Martin St. Louis Pekka Rinne Roberto Luongo Marc-Andre Fleury Tim Thomas
Carey Price had two votes for the Hart, and the bulk of the remaining votes went to Corey Perry (67 votes) and Daniel Sedin (51 votes). Interestingly, last year's Hart winner (Henrik Sedin) did not muster a single vote as the league's MVP. Henrik finished in 10th place in voting for the Hart, which is amazing because the twins (as per usual) had almost identical seasons in value to their team.
Getting back to the players who each received one single vote as the league's MVP, I would be very interested to see where the respective voters resided. I'm guessing that the voters who selected Fleury, Rinne, and Kesler are from the cities where these players play, and the same with Carey Price who garnered two votes as the league's MVP.
Don't get me wrong. These four players are all valuable to their respective teams, but really, are they the most valuable players in the league? I could easily pick 30-40 players more valuable, and as far as Carey Price goes, I would not rate him as one of the top 5 goalies in the NHL, let alone overall players.
Good job getting the stats Willus, but I would really like to see who (of the 126 privileged voters) is picking who!

Posted - 06/22/2011 : 22:07:21 Some real strange (see: wasted) votes really. The Selke wasn't all that close, but someone voted Grabner with their 1st place vote? Really? With Frans Nielsen on the same team?
The Vezina, voted on by the 30 GM's (not sure if a GM is allowed to vote for his own goalie?) was deservedly won by Tim Thomas, but how in the world can he only have 26 total votes? Did 4 GM's really not have a record setting goalie in their top 3???
There's lots of other examples, but those two stood out to me. I wonder what difference it would make if they voted like they do during voting for Olympic Host cities whereby the elimate some in a series of rounds, then get down to a final 3? What i mean is, take the voting as it was, then take the 3 nominees and have all voters vote again, for one of the final 3, meaning some guy who chose Grabner would actually have to revote for one of the top 3 guys? |

Posted - 06/22/2011 : 20:43:52 Just a weak year for awards in general. Perry wins the Hart? Geez!
Lidstrom I think did win this one on reputation. But the voting was very close. Here are the results:

Sorry about the alignment. Table didn't copy well. |

Weber also had a fine year but did not play nearly the offensive role that Lidstrom did. Lidstrom was #2 in scoring, #1 in PP scoring, and was only 9 points different than Weber in the +/- stat.
I think Lidstrom did more offensively and as much defensively as Weber. |
