Term and amount are unknown right now, but word is Bieksa has agreed to an extension with VAN. Those of us in Vancouver knew he was intent on staying so it was only a matter of time. I'll be curious to know the details. |

I have no proof, but when a guy supposedly says before negotiations that he's willing to take a discount to stay "here", AND, the team aknowledges this, AND the player ends up signing here, AND there's limited guys available as UFA's in his role/position, AND he signs for 4.6/year, i have no doubt in my mind that at least one or two other teams would have offered him 5+ / year.
Wasn't the rumour that NYI offered Ehrhoff 6/year? Surely Bieksa would have been over 5. |

Beiksa re-invented himself this past sesaon, to be sure. This time last year most VAN fans could not wait for him to be shipped out, after 2 injury-filled years where he was inconsistent on the ice and didn't show any real defensive ability.
This past season, he was back to his old form, and with Hamhuis formed the teams top shutdown pair. He chipped in with some offense, finished at +30-something, and played a solid physical game - a lot larger than his 6'/200 lb frame should be playing. As Beans said though, what solidified things was his play in the playoffs, he was the leader of that blueline all postseason long, and finished only second to Edler in defensive scoring during the post-season.
4.6M is a fair price for Bieksa. While perhaps not worth more, I have no doubt that some team would have thrown 5M+ at him on July 1 if VAN didn't sign him. And I think Burke might have been first in that lineup. |

Well I wouldn't go that far!! However, I don't think he would have commanded $5+ million on the FA market. He got paid a reasonable salary based on his skills. Frankly, he most likely got a raise based purely on the playoffs.
Remember, this is a guy who as trade bait at the start of last season. $5 million defensemen are not often trade bait. |

not even close to being worth it. He's a 3 million dollar defenseman at best. He's not a big guy and will get hurt easily. he is wreckless and injury prone. He had decent season on a very good team. Mark my words, he will begin his slide into mediocrity again this season. Look for him to join Sami Salo in the press box for much of the rest of his short career. |

I'm okay with this one. He'd have easily gotten more elsewhere, i'd say a min of 5 and possibly 5.5 per year elsewhere so 4.6 for a guy of his age/skill/heart/etc is good by me! |

At first, I thought this was too much for Bieksa, but I thought the same thing about Kesler when he signed his 6-year $30 million deal a year ago. And there's little doubt today hat Kesler is full value for his contract.
Time will tell with Bieksa, but regardless, these big contracts are going to be a challenge for the Canucks, and one casualty along the way will be the inability to sign players like Ehroff (or others) this year, or years to come.

Yep. A top-3 of Bieksa/Hamhuis/Edler with Ballard/Salo slotting into the top-6 somewhere, and then Tanev and Rome is a mighty nice defensive group IMO. And they should have some money to resign the other RFA forwards and perhaps add to the top-6 in some way. |

Per @TSNBobMcKenzie...looks like Ehrhoff will hit the open market. McKenzie says Canucks may now be shopping his negotiating rights
I'm not shocked really. As you said, he's one of the more high profile guys available and likely will be paid well to move on! I'm okay with Gillis sticking to his guns and not going overboard with him considering what Bieksa and Hamhuis were willing to sign for! |

Not related to Bieksa per say, but the VAN blueline...
Rumours are that Ehrhoff will not sign with VAN, and will test the free agent market on July 1. He was apparently offered the same deal as Bieksa, but turned it down. I believe that he will be the best defensive UFA out there, so he's liable to command attention and top dollar as well. I'm sticking with DET as the destination he goes to should he not get an offer from VAN. I would not be surprised to see him get 5.5 per season on a longish-term deal.
This probably means that VAN will hang on to Ballard as well for next season. We'll see if he can bounce back to be the defenseman that Gillis thought he was getting last summer. |

If Ehrhoff does test the market, he's gone for sure I think - and my gut says DET would get him. Given their sudden looming shortage at defense, DET would both pay fair market and provide Ehrhoff with a legitimate chance to win. I can see them offering 5.5M-ish a year, which VAN will probably not do.
If we lose Ehrhoff, then its almost a certainty that we'd sign Salo back, and probably keep Ballard. Edler and Salo are your big guns on the PP. And hopefully use the money to get a scoring winger. We'll see. |

I like the Bieksa deal as it fits him in around what Vancouver has claimed to be their D "cap" of approx 4.5/year. He prob could have got more elsewhere for sure but he obviously likes it here which is also good!
Ehrhoff, i'm not sure, will be willing to take a little less, but we shall soon find out. If he tests the market and is offered 5.5 i think he'll be gone (just a hunch).
I thought originally that Ballard would be staying for sure due to the contract he has but with the new "cap floor" being so high, there's likely teams who would take him, though i wouldn't expect a whole lot in return. My gut says he'll be back though. |

that is a great deal, both in length and amount. 4.6M cap hit confirms rumours that he was willing to take slightly less than market to stay, and should still leave enough room to sign Ehrhoff, assuming he is willing to take a similarly sized deal.
still no word on Ballard's status, other than all the right words being said by both sides - if Ehrhoff does sign now, I expect Ballard to be shipped out ASAP. |
