As is with the Campbell trade and the speculation around Ballard, Montreal may yet benefit from the raised cap floor! Rumours are, they're trying to rid themselves of Scott Gomez and his nasty contract.

If Montreal had cap limit issues (and I am not sure if they do or dont, but you can expect that they will in the next 3 years) then I'm not sure why they havent bought him out and tried to replace him with a more relaistic contract.

I keep expecting to see more buy-outs as teams progress after these long term deals, but it rarely happens. Drury is rumoured to be bought out. Another good (not great) hockey player who becomes a liability to a team with his cap hit.

Guest 5052, you beat me to it....I am expecting a buyout here.

It's a little disappointing that Gomez slipped into this category; it's simply the magnitude of the cap hit that does him in. Still, maybe a team reaching for the cap floor could go for him...

the hab will not buy him out this year,,, and maybe next year if either A they get a new top 6 center from trade of free agency or B. Lars Eller or someone else emerges as a top 6 center,, with the week F.A this year unless the habs sign B. Richards (unlikly) they need Gomez,,

If Gomez was a $4 million/year player, there would be a line up of teams looking at him. That contract sucks so no one would pick it up. If he has one year left, somone would grab him. 2 years?? Maybe. Not at 3 years. Never. $7.3 million cap hit is too much.

you re 100% right on that count aswell if his contract was 4 million i could see Montreal not even trying very hard to move him , instead looking for another top 6 center and pushing him down as the number 3 center,, It`s not like he is wade Redden and being pushed right out of the NHL anytime soon

I don't know - you have to think that MTL is considering trying to move it ever since Campbell (who has a very similar contract and remaining length) got moved to FLA. Slozo's "race to the floor" theory is probably partly behind it, there are a few teams that would benefit cap-wise from getting a middle-of-the-road player for a higher price. FLA, PHX, WIN, NYI.

Last year I would have agreed with you. This year, we'll see.

No thank-you, bye-bye!

It would be a shock to see anyone take on that hit for an underachieving performer. He really does have the potential to be an impact player and help a team to win but wow talk about handcuffed??

It would be a real flyer to take Gomez at this point, agreed.

If he had done his 50+ points, then I'd have said the Leafs might pick him up as a sort of "stopgap" while their young centers develop . . . but at this point, I think that even Tyler Bozak might be better, and that's quite an idictment!

How many years left on his contract, btw?

They gotta do something with him... he's tragic. I just can't see any other team dumb enough to sign him. And Pasty I totally agree with you on the whole Ryan MacDonnoaugh thing... i remember seeing it on the ticker and I couldn't believe my eyes...

To give Gomez that contract was stupid by Glen Sather, but to trade for him was even worst by Gainey. I really hope Montreal can't trade him because ... well just because

what makes you say that leafs81 ? you are 100% right but was even worse with the Ganiey trading for Gomez was the habs actually gave up so good players, it was clearly a salary dump by the rangers so why would the habs give up their former first rounder in Mcdoungh who last year looked extremly good for a young d man,, i would love to still have him in the organization,

now I have a hard team believe any team is going to take on Gomez after he scored 38 points last season, if he had at least stuck to his usual 50 ish points their could be a chance someone would take a chance on him, but i doubt it....

apparently last year he was almost moved to Phoenix for Ed Jovanovski straight up, and the trade fell through when Jovo cop got hurt but i do not know how much truth their ws behind that

no surprise there - I think they were trying to get rid of that contract even before the new floor came into play . Gomez has a limited NTC, he can name 3 teams that he will not accept a trade to - chances are those 3 teams would include teams that are all struggling to get to the floor, so it might be hard.

If they do get rid of Gomez, are they suddenly in the running for RIchards? Or the oft-rumoured acquisition of Lecavalier (so that TB can resign Richards)? Its gonna be an interesting few days for a lot of teams.
