I think hockey night in canada is getting boring. I like Don Cherry but they need some new people in their. Kelly Hrudey needs to move on to something else. Bob Maclean is just not lively enough for a show that airs as much as HNIC. They need some new people in there like Darren Dreger, Nick Kypreos, Bob Waters, and even if they brought in a guy like Cabbie its ratings will go up. More people are watching TSN than HNIC.
I dont know about you but Canada used to worship Hockey Night in Canada and They need someone to make it more lively because Hockey is our Sport!!!!

Yes - Don is a control freak, isn't he. It is probably the narcisist in him. I think that was his downfall as a coach.

HNIC is the best thing that happened to hockey since the stastnys

what do Calgary and a tea bag have in common- they're both only good for one cup

Someone send Mikhailova some tapes of HNIC !! Or if you get Center Ice package, it shows all CBC broadcasts too. When I get home really late from work on weekends, and I am really tired I 'll just fast forward through the games I taped and watch the intermission stuff - it is incredible .

I agree with every single word that Guest 4779 posted. Kelly Hrudey is surprisingly knowledgeable about the play breakdowns - and keep in mind he has very little time to set it up after the commercial break. He is also such a friendly and charming broadcaster, I hope he stays forever. Super nice guy.
Darn near a hockey genius.

I can't find who said it now, but I too noticed (for a few years now) that Bob Cole will say from time to time "that's what I said !", or some variation of this. He is the best hockey play-by-play guy. I can't get enough of that classic North American style broacasting they call it. His voice always sounds so excited
too. It is so energizing. I have to crank up the tv to do it justice. To FEEL it !

Many former players are very intelligent about the game, but aren't very good technical broadcasters. I feel bad for Kypreos sometimes - I yell "spit it out" at him when he can't make his point. Keep in mind these guys watch these tapes of themselves afterwords to work on their broadcasting skills. It must be frustrating to have been an NHL'er, to always have been about the best player on every team you ever played on growing up, and now you can't even act normal on camera. In all fairness, Kypreos has improved.

CBC has to stick to the classy approach with their broadcast - this was one of the best years they've had in a long time. No cheesy for me thanx !

Sweet, now I can read the Instigator cartoons and watch the latest HNIC shows there. I think I like cbc.ca

Oh, and IHC, if the Sabres are playing, I'll sit inside on a nice spring day and watch them! (And with the horrendous humidity on some days here, I'll probably stay inside then anyway).

That's pretty much it. And if you go to cbc.ca, I believe they post his latest and greatest shows for your viewing pleasure.

Guest 4479 is spot on.....I love the class (well, and Don Cherry) in HNIC. Al the other ones with the lame graphics and "tyr-to-sound-cool-but-really-isn't" music are just annoying, and I feel insult the intelligence of the viewer. CBC is old school, and I love it. I think that they should maybe oust Bob from calling the finals and replace him with Jimbo, but other than that, I would change a hell of a lot more with TSN and NBC than with CBC......
Here's just one thing I'd change about NHL on NBC:

They were complaining about the ratings they got in last years playoffs.....I got an idea. Maybe don't show Hockey in the middle of a weekend afternoon IN SPRING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't like sitting inside on a nice spring afternoon, and I am a big hockey guy. Can you imagine how so-so hockey fans in the much warmer USA feel about that? That is a complete joke. I don't get why they(NBC) gets to call the shots about game-times.....I hated playing in the middle of the day, it just didn't feel right. And I bet those NHL players feel the same way too. A day game here and there is OK in the regular season, but it's in the playoffs right now, and it's really annoying.

Sugar Ray over Hasek any day!

I just love the amount of analyzing they do they go into extreme depth point out everything leading up to a good play good call guest

Ok, wow...this topic really hits some buttons for me. I have to agree with IHATE CROSBY on this one. Kelly and Ron are my favorite part of HNIC. Hockey IS Canada and that goes for men, women, boys, girls and that 99 year old Grandma that is cheering on the Canucks from her nursing home TV. Canadian fans know the game and what I love about the 'new' HNIC is that they are respecting that. We are not the drooling masses who need to be "'entertained' with flashy animated graphics and commentators who act like they are in a WWF smackdown show. I love that Kelly chooses to high-light the subtle plays that some people might miss - the ones that don't look like much, but make the difference between a win and a loss. An agility move by a de that gains him time and space, or a smart neutral zone regroup that leads to a goal. This stuff is what makes hockey the "thinking fan's game" and what I love most about the sport and the people who watch it. This is one of the greatest sports on earth and we DO NOT need fireworks, half-time shows, half-clad women or overbearing "on air personalities" to sell the game. Please HNIC, keep respecting the fans and spare us from turning our Saturday nights into yet another Americanized, non-thinking celeb-fest. But please...somebody cut Scott Oake's hair!

Greg Millen - terrible, just terrible. Fire him and replace him with a lamp.
Bob Cole - still good. I just like the oldtimer's style.
Harry Neal - Still great. Same reason as Bob.
Don Whitman - now there is a guy who needs to retire.
Steve Armitage - this guy hasn't changed in 20 years. Is he human?
Jim Hughson - the best commentator in sports.
Drew Remenda - not so good, may improve with time.
John Garrett - such a Vancouver homer he makes me sick more than any Leafs homer.
Cassie Campbell - still pretty hot and knowledgable.

HNIC is still vital. Getting someone "new" like Kypreos would be a mistake. And Tie Domi on TSN? Lord. He was a punching bag for his whole career and now he is supposed to talk out loud?

You miss 100% of the shots you don't take. - Gretz

LOL!!! Love this post fly4apuckguy. I almost totally agree. Absolutely MacLean rules 10x. The guy is so intelligent. Cherry doesn't even catch on alot of the times when MacLean is making fun of him. I suspect many viewers miss his wit as well.
Bless ol' Cole, but he is getting quite long in the tooth. Too many errors these last few years. He must be hearing that too because the other night i noticed Millen corrected him when Cole actually had it right, then Cole said something to the effect of "that's what I said". He sounded a little perturbed. It was pretty funny, I have to say.
I still like Harry Neale.
Kypreos was a jackass as a player and isn't much better at commentating. However he does have some personality.

I'd like to see Ron McLean and Don Taylor double team Don Cherry! His freakin' head would explode!

Hrudey is such a nice guy (even if he is being critical, he makes sure to tell us he loves the guy anyway), him and Ron together is my favorite part of HNIC..I also like Greg Millen, what's wrong with him, he gets the most excited of any of the colour commentators...Way better than Harry Neil.
I can't watch that hockey central crap on Sportsnet, those guys have nothing interesting to say....Sans Ray , garrett...If Sportsnet didn't have don taylor, may god have mercy on that station(the other highlight guys on sportsnet actually try and copy Don...See Greg Ross)
The Score is the best....Those guys are Hilarious, give me Ludzic and Koulie any day over Ron and Don.
If not for Dregger, Mackenzie, Mcquire and Miller, I'd love TSN's hockey guys (ie : just james Duthie and some guests who played in the NHL)......but I gotta give props to sportscenter(well, on the days Holly Horton is working)

I HATE CROSBY

They need to lose Greg Millen for sure.

Bringing in Steve Kouleas would be awesome.

Nothing wrong with MacLean, Hrudey or Cherry.

And they need to cut the Toronto coverage by a big chunk. There are six canadian teams, why does Toronto get half of the total coverage? Even on the regional bias, why don't we see as many Ottawa and Montreal games as Leafs?

Nick Kypreos? ugh... horrible.
Huntman Posted - 04/16/2007 : 19:55:55
I think TSN is better

Greg Millen is the worst part of CBC broadcasts....I hate that guy

- Get Hrudy a personality
- Keep Maclean but get him more interviews.
- Cut Cherry's time in half.
- Give Scott Oake a buzz cut. (PLEASE!!!)
- Cut the Maple Leaf games by at least 1/4
- Bring in Steve Kouleas (The Score/The Spin)
- Bring in Tim Micallef (The Score/Score Tonight)
- Bobby Cole, you know I love ya buddy, but it might be time to return to the Rock full time.
- For the love of God...please please please FIRE GREG MILLEN!!!

that's it.

I gotta agree wiht Babs, the only sportsnet guys I like are Don Taylor, Cmac, Jim Houson and Dan Murphy, I agree the Kyprios is an idiot and Waters is annoying

I wouldnt say the HNIC is bad, I think TSN has good people and generally good broadcasts, I dont like Maguire very much but he does no his stuff.

It's Ron MacLean...

The Sportsnet crew is the most dull, uninteresting and worst-spoken sports crew on cable. Kypreos is an idiot and Waters is boring and stutters every other word.

Cabbie is funny, actually most of the "the Score" crew is very animated, interesting and very knowledgeable. The TSN NHL panel isn't bad, they got a really good catch in Glenn Healy.

I like the HNIC broadcast itself, I would just change the teams they show (if that was realistic). Watching the Leafs/Oilers/Canucks/Flames is what's boring. Anyways, off to watch the Thrashers-Caps game on TSN, hehe
Guest2898 Posted - 04/04/2007 : 16:14:23
HNIC would to just fine if it wasn't always banter about the Leafs. I say show some other teams that actually interest the rest of Canada.
