Has anyone seen Jeff Finger play recently? After signing a 4-year deal worth $14 million at the beginning of the 2008-2009 season, Finger went on to play 1 1/2 seasons for the Leafs, but since then, he's been stuck with the Marlies in the AHL. And the Leafs are stuck paying him $3.5 million this season, and next season too!

What inspired then Leafs GM Cliff Fletcher to sign a career minor-leaguer to such an outrageous contract? Finger was 28 years old at the time, and he had a grand total of 93 games played in the NHL. (And 24 points.)

Finger is not the highest paid player in the AHL though. Wade Redden has this dubious "honour" due to his 6-year $39 million deal he signed with the Rangers three years ago. He's spent the last two seasons in the AHL, and he looks to finish his career there. Glen Sather was the "genius" who signed Redden, and like Fletcher, his best years were behind him at the time he made this deal!

Kinda like the players who were signed! (Redden for sure, but one might say that Finger never really had any great years to begin with. His signing seemed to be based on hope!)

I recall reading that Fletcher got two players confused when signing Finger. He did have a decent partial season in Colorado though and I think that's why he was signed. Not a great signing obviously.

Just retire? Would you just give up being paid 3.5 million a year to play hockey???

Hey Finger it's the retirement booth calling. Join all the other guys like you that play for crappy teams and a crappy contract. Make the world a better place just retire.

Sucks 2 be the rest of ya

Sather was also the genius who signed Gomez to his ridiculous contract.....luckily though he was able to find another genius GM to take him off his hands.

57 points in 198 NHL games currently. Not worth the 3.5 Mill a year. Poor signing and a career AHL'er
