Posted - 12/14/2011 : 19:50:36 It's scary how much talent is "on the shelf" because of concussions. I threw this together using TSN's injured list. There's no real rhyme or reason to the lines / D pairings though I tried to mostly stay true to LW/C/RW
Thoughts?
Savard - Crosby - Giroux M. Michalek - Skinner - Mike Richards Gerbe - M. Goc - P. Mueller Kobasew (listed as "head / IR) - A. McDonald - Nino Niederreiter
Laperrierre, Brayden Schenn, and Jay Beagle are options up front too.
Pronger - M. Staal Letang - Z. Michalek Pitkanen - Zidlicky Martinek - M. Sauer
Goalies -
None currently
But Miller and Reimer were both out recently and that would be a pretty good goalie duo.

Posted - 12/15/2011 : 16:54:49 I think that it's just a different attitude towards concussions now, I don't necessarily think they are happening that much more. Pronger out for the season now, this is getting to be a epidemic.
Are football helmets any different? Wondering if they've made those to better protect against concussions. 16/18 games vs 82 games a season though.
Remember when players didn't wear helmets at all?? Nutters! |

Posted - 12/15/2011 : 16:46:30 Slozo > I was just going by the TSN list so I may have missed people and only took players marked "concussion," "concussion-like symptoms," and "post-concussion syndrome" with the exception of Kobasew as noted (Steve Staios is another possibility to add too)
As for Savard this is his listing on TSN's Injury page >
Marc Savard 2011-09-19 on injured reserve and is expected to miss the entire season post-concussion syndrome
Either way, it's definitely a championship calibre team. They'd be tough for any team in the league to face.
Alex - "Grapes" has long rallied against the hard elbow pads and other equipment that players wear these days (demonstrated to the detriment of Ron Maclean's head) > http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R8YBEQ9QyxQ (about 3minutes in)
I'd venture the size, speed, and strength of players is a big factor too as well as the better diagnosis and treatment of concussions. The NHL has come a long way from "you got your brain rattled, now get back out there!"
Guest > I saw both that and this article (http://www.theglobeandmail.com/sports/hockey/nhls-all-concussion-team-would-be-lock-for-stanley-cup/article2271768/ ) from the Globe and Mail after (believe it or not) I had the idea for the article. You can see the link (in the Original Post) to my post from last season about the 2010-11 "All-Concussion Team" that clearly references where I originally got the idea from.

I wonder where you got the idea for this topic? At least give credit where it's due... Geez people |

Posted - 12/15/2011 : 08:42:41 Even discounting Savard (who would count as retired now, I think?), it's a championship calibre team, certainly a favourite for the cup.
Here's my line-up, taking away Savard and adding some guys you missed (Anisimov, Latendresse, and D'agostini is just now coming back from concussion, and then there are the probable concussions listed as something else) while taking away some of the guys who are already back (like Mueller, Goc):
FORWARDS Skinner - Crosby - Anisimov Michalek - Giroux - Latendresse Gerbe - M. Richards - D'Agostini Kobasew - Antropov - Niedereiter (edit - didn't realise Paille had just come back to play last night)
DEFENCE Letang - M. Staal Pronger - Zidlicky M. Sauer - Z. Michalek
GOAL Khabibulin? (undisclosed) Harding? (out due to "neck" injury?)
One of those goalies I am positive has an actual concussion, my guess is that Harding does for sure (back-up for the Wild).
My defence is the best in the league; And with those centres at my disposal, I roll the three top lines, and use the fourth liners pretty sparingly except for Antropov who I put on an occasional shift if one of the right wingers isn't keeping up.
Powerplay 1st unit: Skinner - Crosby - Michalek - Letang/Pronger PP 2nd unit - Antropov - Giroux - M. Richards - Sauer / M.Staal
pk - Giroux, M.Richards, M.Staal, Sauer/Letang
Stanley Cup is mine!!!

Posted - 12/14/2011 : 23:56:58 So sad to see. I think it's time to stop worrying about goalie equipment, and start looking at this ARMOUR that the players are wearing. C'mon, it has to be a big part of it!!! These concussions are 10 times worse than ever before!
Someone suggested to me that that red line (no two line passes) has something to do about it too? Could that be part of it? It does allow more speed but many of these concussions are results of hits along the boards and nothing to do with the neutral zone. However, some are. Some are partially the result of the speed guys carry through the neutral zone before getting smoked at or near the blueline.
I dunno, but something's gotta change! |
