A report on TSN indicates that Pronger is out for the year, and playoffs, due to "severe post-concussion syndrome". There is also speculation that it could be career ending, given his age at this point a season lost is pretty huge.
That is a pretty big loss for PHI. |

This makes absolutely no sense. How and when did he sustain a concussion. I thought it was a flu/knee surgery that kept him out all this time. Then all of the sudden bam, concussion. Philly's medical staff competence comes into question here don't you think?
He did take that puck to the eye a month ago...I'm guessing it stemmed from that, but perhaps did not make itself evident, or took a smaller hit to make it worse, a-la Crosby. |

As a diehard Philly fan I can't tell you how devastating this news is. Clearly you can not replace a guy like Pronger!! Having said that I do know Holgrem will be very active in acquiring someone to fill that huge void which means who is going out the door this time?????
Biggest dissappointment might be not seeing Pronger in the dressing room on 24/7....lol |

Don't quote me on it, but I am nearly certain that if a player retires due to injury than his contract is done and it does not count against the cap. The NHL would have a hard argument based on Pronger's past year or so of health issues.
I don't know - everything I'm reading says that PHI is on the hook for the contract if he retires, for any reason.
If that is the case, they'll definitely go the LTIR route - something with which they have a lot of practice. |

37 years old, back surgery, knee surgery, and now a concussion that is going to last at least 10 months???
Maybe Philly will be looking for a young defensemen to move forward with. Frankly, the statement above spells
r-e-t-i-r-e-m-e-n-t
in my books.
Pronger doesn't have anything else to prove. What doesn't he have?? The Hart, Norris, Gold Medals, and a Stanley Cup are sitting on a shelf in his rec room. He's done.

I still think they'll look for someone to replace what Pronger brought defensively more than offensively, which is more Gonchar's game, no?
One guy i thought about since his team prob won't make the playoffs and may look to finally start a rebuild is Jay Bouwmeester but while he is "experienced", he's certainly not got ANY of that experience in the post season! However, they could prob afford his salary, which is actually higher than Prongers, by moving a guy or two in other deals? Question is, and this is for another topic/thread....What's the deal with Bouwmeester anyway? Would he even be worth the risk? |

Yeah, I'd have to say, counter to Slozo - I don't think they'll be in the hunt this year for a young defenseman, they'll want a veteran that can QB the PP and help to replace Pronger's minutes. I think they have a reasonably young defensive lineup already.
That being said, I don't think it would take much to pry Gonchar out of OTT... |

Some TSN guy was tweeting that Philly is interested in Gonchar, since he's looked better this year and can quarterback their powerplay. Might be an interesting fit. Fairly heft price tag though. Since Ottawa is rebuilding and Philly has tons of young talent, there might be something to this rumour. |

Well, judging from last night's game . . . Philly looks alright. But I do agree they will be on the market for a D-man, I just think it'll be more of a defensive guy.
First team that comes to mind for me is the Leafs with all of their surplus young defencemen . . . but with all of the murky past history between the Leafs and Philly, not so sure anything would get done. It would have to happen after Komisarek gets back anyways.
But yeah, this will certainly start some interesting rumours I think for Philly.
