Posted - 12/16/2011 : 11:53:47 I just posted about Jay Bouwmeester in the "Pronger" thread and it got me to thinking, what's up with this guy anyway?
If i'm not mistaken, Calgary traded for the rights to negotiate with a guy they thought was going to be an offensive defenseman for them, possible QB for the PP, etc. What they've got is a guy who's high point total in Calgary (29) is lower than every single season he played in Florida! He's also scored just 3 and 4 goals in his two seasons there and is on pace for another 2-3 goal season and roughly 29 points?
I'm pretty sure a lot of people thought going to Calgary was gonna allow this guy to flourish offensively. We've not seen anything close to expectations as of yet!
My question is, was he just over rated this whole time, or does he just not fit into Calgary and it's system??? And, can he rebound, be it there or elsewhere, and become anything close to the guy / player many thought he would be??? |

I stand corrected. Thank you for that. I looked at his stat page but failed to look up the list high enough to see he'd actually played in the NHL before the lockout (i saw where he played AHL and thought i'd looked up high enough.) |

Posted - 12/17/2011 : 11:30:38 Bouwmeester is a player many teams would love to have regardless of his drop off in offensive production he plays a bunch of minutes and is a damn good defencemen. Calgary would be silly to even ponder giving him up in a trade, they would essentially be giving up the season because without Bowmee i'm not exactly sure who we expect to play defence for the rest of the year |

Posted - 12/17/2011 : 09:36:20 Actually Calgary gave up Phaneuf because of Giordano's outbreak and so they could sign both him and Bourque to extensions. Also Phaneuf was a cancer in that dressing room.
Edit: Alex - his first season in Florida he only scored 16 points in 82 games
Bouwmeester was acquired to do two things: produce offence and eat minutes. Unfortunately he hasn't produced anywhere near as many points in Calgary as many (myself included) would like, he does eat up major minutes.
When Giordano was healthy he was playing something like 23-25 minutes a game. Now that Gio is hurt he's playing even more. I think he went over 30 minutes last night in Florida. He's basically anchoring every PK situation Calgary gets into. I forget what the stat was, but Calgary spent something like 10 minutes on the PK against Edmonton a week or two back and he was on the ice for 8+ of that. Last night over 12 PIM he was on for 8:40. Simply put, the man's a ******* workhorse.
On the offensive side of things he's been a disappointment, but the reason isn't too hard to see. In Florida d-men jumped into the rush all the time. By partway through the season Florida would know it wasn't making the playoffs and people would take more gambles than they normally would and it led to offensive production.
In Calgary he's staying behind more. He's not physical enough for this to be an effective style for him. And his point totals were obviously going to go down when he first came to Calgary... they couldn't buy goals at that time either.
More and more though I'm seeing Bouwmeester jump into rushes and float around more, in general just being more active around the puck. I'm really hoping this is a sign of things to come offensively for him. It would be great.
The long and short of it is I'm a fan of Bouwmeester, just not at his current price tag. Same as I was with Jokinen when Calgary first got him. I like him, but not at that price - just look at Jokinen now! He leads the Flames in points and has been one of their most consistent players this year. |

Posted - 12/17/2011 : 09:04:48 I am a flames fan, And have for a long time now hated Bouwmeaster on this team. He is over paid and over rated. Like you said he was brought in to put up points and since being in Calgary has been anything but stellar. Would love to see him get moved but know it will never happen becasue of his contract and lack of production. Can't believe we gave up Phaneuf becasue of his potential. It's even worse becasue even if a team did show interest he has a no movement clause.... |
