It obviously depends on the quality of competition but,

Do you think that in general it's harder to make the playoffs in an eight team division opposed to one with only seven?

#1- It is bulls*** for the teams in the 8 team conferences vs. the 7 team conferences. Why should my team have to be better than 4 other teams to make the playoffs when yours has to only be better than 3.
#2- Taking away the Playoff's would be a huge mistake. Obviously it's more money for the owners(who cares). The problem is playoffs provide a do or die atmosphere which creates a pressure making some players choke and some players clutch. This makes things way more interesting and proves you have a team when it counts not just a team with endurance.

I absolutely agree with Lunchbox; You see, the most prevalent sport in the world, football/soccer(whatever you want to call it) has had the NO-playoff system, 1division thing for a long time.

It works for soccer because in most places, they don't have to travel much more than a couple hundred clicks. (take the english premier league, spanish premiera, serie A, and any other top-flight football league in europe)

In North America, we can't do that due to geography and population with our sports, so we have playoffs, unbalanced conferences etc. And let's face it, playoffs are awesome competition(and $$ for owners)

So if you want FAIR, get rid of the playoffs, make one giant conference, play everybody the same number of times, and exchange the president's trophy with the Stanley Cup, cause why would have playoffs if you already played everybody and had the best record???

What's that I hear??? Yes, I think I hear it: uproar, tumult, and disdain for fairness, because there are no playoffs in a fair league system, because tradition has been relinquished to history?? Yup.

So stop complaining that the current system is better/worse than the new system. Suck it up princess, and enjoy the hockey.

Must we have two active threads on this rubbish?

Honestly, in the long run, its a wash. Some years you may get into the playoffs easier in one conference, the next year it could be harder.

Lets say your beloved team is in an 8 team conference and have 94 points, which gets you 5th place. "Oh look," you say, "If we were in conference C, we'd be in fourth and have a playoff spot! Darn this new unfair system!" Its easy to blame it on that extra team...

However, sometimes teams will be in 5th place in a 7 team conference, and would have been in 4th or higher in conference A or B. What do you blame that supposed unfairness on then?

It happens in the current system, it'll happen in any system except for a one conference, free-for-all battle royale with cheese. (Which if they ever invent teleportation, and travel isnt an issue, I would love to see)

To "have better players, better coaching, better trainers, better medical staff, shorter travel, fewer long road trips, etc" than one more team might I add. RELEVANT

No, Sashis, it is not a contridiction. It means that some things are more important than others. Such as having better players, better coaching, better trainers, better medical staff, shorter travel, fewer long road trips, etc, etc, etc. The number of teams in the division you play in has such an insignificant impact it is irrelevant.

You can't deny math is a factor, strange how nine people did, but stranger that beans say's it is a factor(one of the hundreds but still a factor no less) and then said it's irrelevant, that's a pretty big contradiction

I will vote E, which is the same as C without the 'math is not a factor' comment. Math is a factor, however the 8 vs 7 team conference and the simple fraction involved is one of hundreds of factors.

As Slozo said, same number of teams in the NHL, same number of teams make the playoffs. 7 vs 8 is irrelevant.

I vote D : This poll is biased

My answer is C)

No, not any harder than it is now, really - as it would depend on what division/conference you are in, so it differs year to year based on the quality of competition for each team's division/conference.

In the end, it's still 8 teams that make the playoffs.
