Posted - 01/05/2012 : 23:06:18 What a game! First off, it took incredible guts / balls to throw that Makarov goalie in vs Canada in the final 5 mins, but to come back with him to start the Gold Medal game??? WTF? Unless the other guy was hurt, sick, etc, i can't believe they went with this guy! Wasn't the other goalie the one who'd played the majority for them?
Regardless, this Makarov kid put up one of the best games EVER by a goalie in the WJC's! Incredible, and sad that he had to lose, but let's face it, the better team definitely won!
I think this year, more than any that i can recall, shows you how one bad or "off" game can cost you that covetted medal! Finland almost beats Sweden, the eventual gold medal winner, Sweden completely outplays Russia, Russia beat Canada, yet Canada dominated Finland both times they played?
Did the best team win this tournament? I suppose there's an argument that Sweden was indeed the best? But i sure as heck don't think they'd have outshot Canada by that kind of margin in a gold medal game!!! 58-17?? Incredible!
Regardless, nice to seem them break a ridiculously long drought with their first gold at WJC's in 30+ years and only their 2nd ever? Was that really correct? Wow! |

It's the beauty of a tournament like this (or the Olympics) – every single game is meaningful, and one team (or goalie) being hot at the right time makes all the difference.
No sour grapes, but in my opinion, Canada had the best team (they usually do), but they came up short against the Russians. In a 7-game series, Canada would come out on top against Russia or any other opponent.
Take a look at our roster. All our players are drafted (or will be drafted), and that's the way it's been for years.
How many Russians are currently playing in the NHL? 22! Sure, lots are playing in the KHL, but no one can convince me that Russia (or Sweden) have better hockey talent than Canada.
There are over 400 Canadians playing in the NHL, the best league in the world, so a disappointing result in the WJC's is not going to change my opinion.
I think Canada performed very well in this tournament, and sometimes the best team does not win! No disrespect to the Russian or Swedish teams. They're both very good teams, and good for them to win when it counted. (Look how close Sweden was to being eliminated. A bad clear-out by the Finnish goalie with 1 1/2 minutes to play, and then winning the game in the shootout. It doesn't get closer than that.)
And while I believe the gold medal final is a coin flip, I think Canada will recover from their disappointing loss to the Russians, and beat the Finns! |
