As much as I love Nicklas Backstrom and hate Bourque I would've made it 4. for the reason that I see Backstrom going down a little not sure if any one else so it

Sucks 2 be the rest of ya

That was the definition of intentional.. However he did not connect fully so I feel that 5 games is a suitable amount of games.

I can certainly cede that the circumstance was not near as devastating as the Cormier/Tam given their speeds etc, but was the intent really all that different?

Had Backstrom gone down and been injured, would the punishment still then be an acceptable 5 games, as Alex eluded to?

I am not suggesting the same discipline that Cormier recieved, only that 5 games seems light for what was clearly a play with bad intent.

I saw Bourque throw an intentional elbow. If the only that saved it from being more devastating was the speed they were moving at, then that is just good fortune from a bad decision. That is the similarity I see between the two incidents.

Throwing a check that is deemed a head shot as part of a hockey play, is one thing, but throwing a deliberate elbow is just plain malicious, and unfortunately in this case the suspension doesn't address the intent as severely as it should, again, in my opinion only.

I find it odd that when given the chance to establish clear precedent for a play that isn't part of the normal play, much like the Carcillo hit on Gilbert, the league again, does what it has in the past, and lightens the message, rather than err on the side of caution with heavier discipline.

I would have been happier to see maybe 8-10 for Bourque and 15 for Carcillo, that would have sent a clearer message.

Wow, not often am in disagreement with FER but c'mon pal?? This was nothing like the Cormier/Tam hit. Not even close. Unless my memory is failing me, Cormier was absolutely flying when he hit Tam (who was also at or near top speed). What Bourque did was what Messier did almost every night back in the 80's. It's a dirty elbow, but not anything like Cormier's.

5 games is solid. I could even agree with 10 on the repeat offender point. 20 would be absurd. It would be comparative to cutting off the hand of a shoplifter who stole a chocolate bar. Sure, rules are rules, but the punishment has to fit the crime.

FER, it all goes back to punishing on outcome unfortunately. At least the NHL has basically admitted they do so now. Let's face it, if Backstrom had been KO'd and carried off the ice, the suspension would be far worse!

Interesting to see that everyone seems satisfied with 5 games. I didn't catch who it was, but on the radio today, one hockey mind was saying he'd have liked to see 10! His reasoning was basically that Bourque is a repeat offender (this season alone) AND it was a blatant attempt to hit a guy in the head with an elbow, EXACTLY what the league is trying to do away with!!!

Clearly the message isn't getting through to this guy.

I agree completely. This incident, to me anyways, was very reminiscent of a similar incident involving Patrice Cormier and Mikael Tam in the QJMHL a couple seasons ago. Cormier got the remainder of the season(20is games if I remember correctly), and the only difference was the outcome of the elbow, the intent looked scarily familiar. 5 games isn't enough IMHO.

Carcillo of Chicago should be suspended indefinitely for his hit on Gilbert.

That hit was potentially paralyzing to Tom Gilbert, lucky he had his gloves up when his neck/face was smashed into the top of the boards.

Sashis, if you want my honest opinion, pay me for it..... Kidding. I have no issue with 5 games. Direct shot to the head, no hockey play, my opinion is that any elbow to the head is intent to injure.

5 games is about right.

Now, if you want to get me going on how I think 7 games for Carcillo is weak, just let me know. I am ready to go on that one.

I think I actually agree with you (never thought I'd say that) As for carcillo 7 games is still a lot, but I'd also rather see more games than less.

Oh, I got your back on this buddy! Forget Beans, he doesn't know what he blathers on about on a good day!

That was clearly Backstrom's fault for sticking his chin out there. Blatant 'chinning' major if I ever saw one! If Shanny could only review it closer, he'd see that it was an intentional chin, meant to cause damage to Bourque's elbow, and thus, deserves at least one million games!

Either that or Bourque was trying for a shoulder on shoulder check and Backstrom's slowing causes the elbow to make contact, higher than the shoudler would have, clearly an accident.

My favorite, the elbow missed the chin, caught the neck, and the incident looked worse because of the snapping motion of Backstrom's head from the shot to the neck!

Doesn't matter which theory, don't want to rule any of them out and give Beans the oppurtunity to mock those of us with eagle eyes and open minds!

given that its a elbow directly to the head, that Bourque clearly goes out of his way to elevate his elbow to the head, and that Bourque is a repeat offender (one other suspension this year), 5 games seems appropriate. His next one will be even more I suspect.
