Not sure about Tonelli being the Porcupine though. Maybe he just reminded me of a porcupine for some reason. He was like a needle in everyone's face. Anyway, older guys out there, was Tonelli a tremendous workhorse of a guy or what? Had some talent too. Made the nice pass to Nystrom for the overtime goal that started the Isles Dynasty. And what a battler in the corners! Ahhh, I miss those old-time guys a bit.

Oh, and the 1984 Canada Cup MVP? None other than the Porcupine (a.k.a. "The Greasy Jet")

Is it just me or would "the greasy jet" be considered not p.c. these days?

Two of my all-time favorite players:

Terry "Bloody" O'Reilly

and

John "The Greasy Jet" Tonelli

I was not an Islander fan but I absolutely loved Tonelli. I don't know where it came from but for some reason I also remember him being referred to as the "Porcupine". Also, for O'Reilly I seem to recall the "Tazmanian Devil". Anyone else recall those names? Or maybe those were just the nicknames my buddies and I came up with for them, I don't remember.

I'm starting to call Fleury "Marc-Andre-Ronald Fleury." Anyone seen The Kingdom? The main character's name is Ronald Fleury. Whenever I hear someone in the movie say "Agent Fleury" I think of the Penguins' goalie, LOL!

Henke is the swedish nickname for Henrik. Hank sounds American to me.

Hey 1603, since you're Swedish I thought I'd ask you this: Is Hank a nickname for Henrik? A lot of announcers seem to call Lundqvist and other players with the name Henrik "Hank", so I was just wondering.

Mats Sundin Sudden
Nicklas Lidström Lidas

Other nicknames I use:
Matthew Lombardi - Matthew Lardbody (doesn't really fit since he's so fast, but if he does something like score the winning goal against your team, calling him that is a good way to let out fustration)
Daniel Girardi - Giarrdia

Sidney Crosby - "The Wizard of Cros"

Jarome Iginla - "Iggy"

Gonchar - I call him "Glaci-ar" because he skates like a glacier

Kovalchuk - "Upchuk"

Jeremy Roenick - "Buble" because he's always singing

Datsyk - "Dat-sucks"

Lindros - "The Big E", "E-train"

That's all I can think of right now...

That's just what we do here in North America. It's kind of like a pet name, a bit like your diminutives in Russian, except they're usually based on the last name.
