Posted - 04/25/2012 : 08:54:28 With no other games taking place last night, I watched New Jersey defeat Florida in overtime.
One would think that a do-or-die game going to overtime in the first round of the playoffs would be exciting and entertaining, but I was not overly impressed.
I've caught a few periods of action between the Devils and Panthers these playoffs, but for excitement and entertainment, I rank this matchup as 8th out of the eight first round match-ups.
While last night's game had some positives (Panthers back-up goalie, Clemmensen, was terrific), I found the play sloppy, more on Florida's end, but also, New Jersey too.
Florida must have given up the puck a hundred times, and generated few chances on the attack. New Jersey was better, but they didn't capitalize on their chances. Sure, Clemmensen played well, but they must have missed the net 20-30 times.
As I think about the two teams playing in this series, both teams were not overly impressive in the regular season. Florida, in particular, registered only 32 ROW (regulation and overtime wins). In the east, Buffalo had the same number of ROW's, and Tampa Bay and Winnipeg had more ROW's. But Florida beat everyone in the NHL with 18 overtime "loser" points, which definitely helped them finish where they did.
But those are the rules, so it is what it is.
But one thing for sure. I bet the ratings are the lowest for this series, and I'm absolutely certain that given the choice between the Devils-Panthers game 7, and the Rangers-Senators game 7, few hockey fans (except homers) will watch the Devils-Panthers game on Thursday night!

I used to like watching NJD series when Scott Stevens was smashing anyone who crossed his blue line.
Part of the reason its a boring series is lack of star power, Brodeur is old news,Kovalchuck has done nothing (him and Gaborik should get together this offseason with the lion from the wizard of oz and find some HEART!) The next biggest name...Parise, Versteeg, Fleishmen...not exactly the same as Boston/Wash or NYR/Ott

Kovie has been pretty good actually, but not dominant like he was at times in the middle of the season for Jersey. Parise has been a disapointment.
But yeah, Florida lacks star power, utterly. Not even one on their team - perhaps the only team ever in the history of the playoffs to have a lineup with as many cast-offs and retreads. Hey - they made the playoffs, fair enough, just sayin'.

Posted - 04/25/2012 : 14:22:54 Positionally smart and defensively sound. Not all good hockey plays happen with the puck. The offensive drives by both teams looked brutal. Agree or dont agree but I aint trying to make anybody look bad here. quote: Originally posted by slozo

I didn't say it wasn't boring as hell. Both teams looked sloppy offensively, I will give you that.
But you DID say, "Both teams played responsible . . ." and, "It didn't look to rough on the ice either, just smart positional play"
And I disagreed with that.
And now, you are officially contradicting yourself.

Well, i have to say this, has NJ ever been involved in an exciting series? Lol.
The New Jersey/ NYR series with the Sean Avery antics on Brodeur wasn't a bad series to watch, that was pretty exciting!
Other than that you are right, NJ doesn't play exciting hockey. I don't really think it matters, whoever wins won't make it past the next round anyway.
2001 stanley cup final series was one of the best imo

4178, you mentioned the Jets and Lightning with more wins (ROW) than the Panthers and how Florida feasted on the bonus points of shootouts, etc. What i think this further shows is the parity in the NHL. If either the Jets or Lightning had snuck into the playoffs, they'd prob be giving the Devils as much trouble as the Panthers are! |

Posted - 04/25/2012 : 09:10:02 Actually, I have to agree with the guest, over what JoshuaCanada is contending.
I did NOT see responsibly played hockey - I just saw poor quality hockey, frankly.
It's a series dud. Brodeur let in 2 goals on . . . 11 shots? And NJ looked good at times, but also played very sloppy in the neutral zone - probably a result of being so concerned about letting anything close to 20 shots on a leaky Brodeur!
yaaaaawn.

Posted - 04/25/2012 : 09:02:38 I will give you there wasn't many end to end rushes and more flip pass to get the puck deep without drawing icing. Both teams played responsible which doesn't look sexy, but responsible wins games over sexy. It didn't look to rough on the ice either, just smart positional play |
