Did the Nashville Predators make the right call by suspending Radulov and Kostitsyn for violating team rules?

I 100% agree with Nashvilles move to suspend these 2 players.

Is it a bit of a gamble?? Well, maybe... I think due to all the emotion and fan frenzy of the play offs that some people may forget that Nashville was a pretty darn good team BEFORE they picked up these 2 numnuts.

One of them was picked up at the trade deadline and the other when there was, what?? 8 games to go in the regular season?

They were somewhere around 37W and 19L with 7OTL before the trade deadline... Pretty decent.

In other words my feelings are that you go with the players that have stayed the course all year, worked together all year, and respects the team and their fans ahead of themselves... Not to mention, have proven BEFORE these 2 hot dogs showed up that they are a pretty decent hockey club.

If they lose, they lose... I still have to go to work the next day and provide for my family, etc, so in the grand scope of things, how big of a deal is this anyways? But as a fan (and not even a Preds fan) I have MOUND of respect for what the Preds management did.

Pro athletes are paid MILLIONS of dollars and are revered by thousands of people that work every bit as hard EVERY SINGLE DAY as they do. You would think if these 2 had any bit of character maybe they could, at the very least, respect what hockey means to those that work hard to maybe take there kids to one or two games a year. Respect the people that pay their salaries and just want their team to try hard and for them to be entertained. Their actions are not just disrespectful to the team in which they play but also to little boy, or girl, that just got her first Preds jersey with RADULOV on the back.

You 2 "players" have all summer to go back home and wallow in your millions and do what you like. Maybe you could have respected those that don't have that luxury and you could have just showed up and played your best so that the little girl/boy with the RADULOV jersey can still where it with pride and still look at you as his/her favorite player.

Man... No one asked you to come to Nashville to cure a terminal illness or to split the atom or anything. I think most people (including management) just wanted you to show up, PREPARE, perform like you care, appreciate the good fortune you have, and go play a kids game with some passion and energy. In simpler terms, just go and play hockey... A GAME... Guess that was a little too much to ask though huh... Oh well...

Good move Nashville. I hope your fans and the players on your team at least respect the message that your management team sent even if you don't agree with it. What your team is and what an organization stands for can't be just graded on whether you win or lose. I hope you are rewarded for your decision with future players that WANT to play for an organization that actually says, "No player is more important that the team" and stands by it. In my own opinion and as a fan, the game has no room for selfish millionaire athletes that don't seem to respect, or appreciate, the pretty awesome opportunity that they have.

The Preds should never have been put in a position to have to make decisions like this. But was it a gamble?? I'm not so sure.

Oh well... Off to work... Have a good night fellas...

I'll only behave like a professional and abide by team rules only when I get paid. Winning the Stanley cup, who cares that's for chumps.

Easy big guy, i was only making a point, and that's why i said "it's ironic". It's also why i stated that i am totally against what they did. Whatever.....obviously you read only the parts you wanna read.

I believe the guest was being sarcastic. Maybe he should of put in some "~" for you.

Winning the Stanley Cup is better then getting paid I would think. Especially when you u already have hundreds of thousands if not millions in the bank. As a matter of fact wouldn`t kissing the Stanley Cup be the ultimate form of payment. Or maybe im just Canadian.

Wouldn't go to work hungover if it was one of the most important days of the company. Why can't we hold those millionaires to such standards? They are role models to thousands and are publicly representing an organization. That's why they are required to wear suits while in the press box. It is an expected professional standard.

No, and unfortunately they (Trotz / the team) may be forced to play him/them next game because of tonight's lack of offense. The way Phoenix is playing, they're gonna be a tough team to beat 3 in a row, but i still think Nashville is capable of it.

Amazing, as a Canucks fan, i was hoping they'd draw Phoenix but maybe they wouldn't have been the easy draw i was expecting?

It is something called being a professional. Look up what it means. It would seem Rads and Kosts have no idea what that means. From your defence of them, perhaps you have no idea either.

These are actions of spoiled kids thinking that they are above the team and expectations of them. This franchise is built on team work not individuals. I think their motto is we before me. So good for Nashville this is how you create a winning environment that is respected by the league and its players.

What do you think would happen if they let this go? Every player will walk all over them and you have the Danny Heatley sulking problem or the egotistical Radulov making managerial decisions for the team. Good luck with winning with those type of players.

If Nashville wins without the, then these boys should get suspended a couple of more games. BTW, the game time was 5pm and Rads and Kosts played worst than donkey turd.

I have gone to work with a hangover before. Firstly, it's not fun. Secondly, you are far from at your best. Thirdly, going to work hungover one normal day vs going to work hungover when you are up against the ropes, you have a year's worth of work hanging in the balance, and you have an entire team of people counting on you is something completely different.

I have one word for people in the real world who put theselves ahead of the bet interets of the organization in critical times:

Fired.

If people don't want to be treated like idiots they shouldn't act like idiots. You teach what you allow. If the Preds allowed this behavior to happen without repercussion than they aren telling their entire team it's ok to put your own childish and moronic self interests ahead of the united goal of the organization.

Morons. I hope Tootoo goes out tonight and gets a Gordie and the two Prima Donnas continue to sit and watch their team success without them.

Daniel Alfredsson is the MVP of the universe. All hail the Ottawa Senators!!!!!

One has to wonder how this affects contract talks with Radulov for next year. Even though he has 6 points in the playoffs, he has not been NSH's best player by far in any game, and is quite often either invisible or visible in the wrong way. He was looking at this stint as a chance to prove he was worth that next big contract...

Their best player...no, but he has played good in any of the games i've watched. I think he'll get a good contract with a team in the NHL if he decides to stay.

Got to say tonight i expect Radulov in the game as one of their replacement guys got hurt in game 3. The name escapes me...but he left after a hit.

My point being, Tootoo earned his spot tonight in my opinion, he was all over the ice in game three, and despite those annoying whistles...ugh brutal, i think you have to reward him for that effort. The knock on him hasn't been his play or his heart its his temper and his inability to maintain his composure. They mentioned on the broadcast last game he has been sober for a year and is trying to clean up his life...good for him!

If Tootoo keeps playing like he did last game his hockey life is in good shape.

I believe the thinking of these youngsters was along the lines of, "No way we'll get punished. We're too important. Especially at this time of year."

Now, this thinking may work with your high-school rugby coach, whose job may be on the line after banging your French immersion teacher (and who wouldn't), but, this is the BIGS!

It may have been the norm in the past. Even Don Cherry has chastised Preds' management for their decision. It just does not happen anymore. There is too much at stake, and any other management group would have done the same.

The above analysis of what these guys may have been thinking is pure speculation. I cannot, however, think of any other way they could have rationalized their behaviour. And this is a great example of skewed logic. Even my cat knows if he throws up, it's dry food for a week.

The Oil WILL make the playoffs in 2013.

Well, it appears as though they didn't miss them much tonight. Neither is known for their D and they managed to score a couple without them in a 2-0 win! Be interesting to see if either plays in game 4? Remember, both of these guys were late season additions to the Preds and therefore weren't a huge part of the team and it's accomplishment this season.

Did you see Radulov play in game 2? He was absolutely abysmal. Players actions affect the team without a doubt.
Alex116 Posted - 05/02/2012 : 15:35:09
Clatts....i couldn't disagree more. Team rules are team rules and when a team is paying someone millions of dollars, they've got every right to expect some rules to be followed!

As far as your point about the game not being till 7 or 8, keep in mind these guys have game day meetings, skates, meals, etc which are usually mandatory team functions that they're expected to attend. NO ONE is capable of being 100% after a night out boozing till 4am. Sure, they may not get totally hungover, but it's a fact that their bodies will not be as game ready as if they were properly rested!

I fully support the team suspending these to morons!

I think this is going to help the team. I think they definitely made the right call.

Jordan Tootoo is a huge player on this team, and needs to get out there.

Go back to what got them here in the first place: Grit, speed and heart. Anyway, let's see how it works out!
Guest4178 Posted - 05/02/2012 : 11:20:18
Should we be surprised that Radulov would step outside the team rules?

Isn't he the guy who slashed his coach in the head this past season, while on the bench in a KHL game?

Any player who shows this kind of disrespect to his coach, is likely to be disrespectful in other ways too!

So while it's very surprising to see two players suspended in the middle of the playoffs, it's no surprise to me that Radulov is one of those players.
Guest8384 Posted - 05/02/2012 : 10:58:47
Statman

What do you think would be appropriate punishment without suspending them?

Do you think a fine would work? I doubt it.

I think it is a great call and the only one that could have been made.

Cyclonis Posted - 05/02/2012 : 09:45:26
It would seem that Trotz has the full backing of his GM as well as per the TSN story so don't expect him too take too much heat for this. It is a team game and perhaps the team will respond with a better effort.

I don't see an issue around this suspension and agree with many of the posters here that it was a good move.
n/a Posted - 05/02/2012 : 05:03:31
It's as dramatic a suspension during the playoffs as I have ever seen myself . . . being suspended by your own team, that is. Radulov and Kostytsin are not small potatoes . . . it's a big hit to take for the team.

Would the team have suspended them if it hadn't become public / they hadn't gotten "caught? My guess is no . . . but at any rate, it's the right thing to do I suppose. And good on Nashville management for doing it - because even if I could argue successfully it's only because they got "caught" - would another team just suffer the bad press and keep their two players of that calibre in the line-up? There's a good chance that is exactly what would happen.

So, good on Nashville. It's EXCELLENT press salvaged from bad press, and it's for the fans - we are moral, we have rules, we expect our players to behave a certain way. And . . . we have a strong backbone, and are willing to lose by doing the RIGHT thing.

Stand back, and take another look boys . . . this doesn't happen often.

"Take off, eh?" - Bob and Doug
theraj662 Posted - 05/02/2012 : 03:36:47
The issue isn't so much that they stayed out late WAY past curfew, which is bad enough, it's WHEN they did it. It would be one thing if the following day was a day off, but they had a game that day. It's bad enough to do that during the regular season, but during the playoffs? I don't blame the coach for being livid! Kudos to Trotz for sending a message!
Statman Posted - 05/02/2012 : 00:36:05
Whoa there, boys! I didn't say that because you don't suspend them that you shouldn't do anything to make them feel the wrath of Trotz!
I'm sure there are many other punishments that could be handed down, but to take two top six forwards out of your own lineup in a must-win playoff game is crazy!

As for the question of Trotz getting fired, win or lose, don't bet on that happening anytime soon.
Shepsky Posted - 05/01/2012 : 19:09:11
on another note, do you think this will affect Radulov's chances for getting big offers next year, he's already putting himself ahead of the team at a HUGE time. good work Trotz, deliver a message!

Statman, as soon as you start making those sorts of distinctions, people will run all over you. If you don't suspend them, it sends a message that its OK to party until 4am and dodge team rules during the playoffs, because nothing will happen to you. Then what happens?

I like the call that NSH made here, it shows other players that the team comes first and no one is above the law in any situation. They have rules for a reason...

If NSH should lose the series now, does the blame fall on Trotz/management for suspending players, or on the players for disobeying the rules when they knew what the consequence would be?
Alex116 Posted - 05/01/2012 : 14:23:31
This is HUGE for Trotz. If the Preds can win without these guys and get back in the series, he'll look like a genious! If they lose, he might look bad and perhaps his job could be on the line all things considered? Then again, this guy may never lose his job considering how long he's been there?

Then there's this to consider......the Preds may be better off without these two with the way they've played the first two?
Statman Posted - 05/01/2012 : 13:44:23
What did these guys do, kill a judge? Send sensitive government documents to the Russian embassy?

I'm all for the enforcement of team rules and treating all your players as responsible equals, but this move punishes the team as much as the players involved. This isn't the regular season, either. These games mean something! Seems like there could have been a better way to deal with this. Should be interesting to watch the fallout if the Preds lose this one.
