Giroux has received a 1 game suspension for his hit on Zubrus in Game 4 of the PHI-NJ series. Should he have been suspended?

I completely agree that he should have and deserved the suspension. It wasn't the hit but the intent that was looked at. He was clearly head hunting. He turned back a bit just to land that hit. The puck was nowhere near Zubrus when the hit was delivered |

The path Giroux takes makes me disagree with what you are seeing. Giroux to me takes an extra second to come around the front of Zubrus to make the hit. It doesn't look for a second like he intended to shoulder check him towards the boards. This clearly looked to me like he was trying to flatten him onto his ass! I'm not saying i fully believe Giroux was trying for his head, but it really doesn't matter. It's the "hitters" responsibility in a case like this to make sure the hit is legal! In Giroux's state, that being extremely frustrated, it looks to me as though he was just a little careless and it cost him and his team his services in a do or die game, which in turn, they've lost and been eliminated. Would he have been enough to win the game tonight for the Flyers? Prob not but you never know. |

Did no one see Zubrus swing his left arm at Giroux and miss causing him to open up and take then hit in the head as opposed to the shoulder which is what would have happened? Split second actions caused this hit to the head not intent. |

I agree, suspension is deserved.
As far as the comment about Weber. Clearly that was a miskate by Shannahan. I expect something to come from this in the summer. But just because that call was missed does not mean future calls should be missed.
This is the exact thing that the NHL is trying to get rid of. Top it off as a premediated hit, 1 game might actually be light.

Absolutely deserving of a suspension. (so was Weber's of course but that's a whole other kettle of fish)
And yeah, it would be really nice if the league was consistent in handing out suspensions in a few regards, notably:
1) A 5-game suspension in October should be a 5-game suspension in the playoffs.
and
2) A 4th-line "grinder" should get the same treatment as the "superstar" player.

I'm 100% with ya there! There's been HUGE issues with consistency in suspensions in these playoffs! Many believe it stems from Shanny dropping the ball on the Weber incident and maybe that's the case. Regardless, if you ignore the other incidents all together and pretend this was the first, i still think a game is fair (same 1 game i though Weber should have rec'd). |

its a pretty clear suspend-able offense. Giroux's initial point of contact was shoulder to head, and it was deliberate (ie, he initiated the contact and did not try to dodge it). 1 game is appropriate. |

To clarify I understand why this hit would be worthy of a suspension in the regular season but I did not think this warrants a suspension in these playoffs the way they have gone.
I don't remember rulings to have ever been this inconsistent. I can't be the only person who 'guesses the suspension length' completely wrong after every questionable hit. Players have gotten away with worse than Giroux's hit in these playoffs. (and especially 'star' players) |

Open Ice..... You said "Yes" but then you go on to claim it should only have been a penalty? I'm assuming you meant "no"?
Either way, how can you you didn't "see any intent to injure" when the "principle point of contact", and ONLY point of contact for that matter, was with Zubrus' head??? Maybe Giroux intended to hit him in the chest and missed, but that's the risk you take when throwing a check like that. I see you compare it to the Weber incident which is understandable, but unfortunately the league / Shanny missed the boat on that one but have, imo, chosen the right way this time in giving him a suspension. |

While Giroux was playing mad and reckless at the time (because Brodeur appeared to play the puck in the no-play zone and got away with it) but to me this suspension makes no sense. I don't see any intent to injure, and it wasn't even a particularly hard hit - I believe Zubrus returned to the game no worse for wear. Giroux probably deserved a penalty for being a little overzealous/late but a suspension?
I guess Giroux should have grabbed Zubrus' head and slammed it into the boards instead. |
