Posted - 05/23/2007 : 12:41:10 I was watching Coach's Corner the other day and heard Don Cherry say that he had predicted this Finals outcome from before the season started. Did Don Cherry actually pick Ottawa and Anaheim from before the start of the season, or was he just bluffing? I almost wouldn't be surprised if he did, but it still seems too good to be true that he could forsee the two best teams through a whole season of hockey. So does anyone remember him making these picks from way back then? |

He made those pics alright....I remember hearing that for sure...But good call Mik, Cherry's just a lucky guesser. I love the guy, but I don't look to him for any hockey insite...Anyone who does, I recommend you watch "Rockem Sockem 8" at the end of the movie he shows his idea of an ideal prectice for any level of hockey team...It's a joke...Two-on-one drills and other lame novice drills.....Another thing that kinda bugs me about Don, is how he thinks he knows what goalies want. He makes a coment EVERY time about D-men putting their sticks in front of an oncoming shot. That is just a motor reflex for a D-man to do...If ever you get the chance to have a slapshot fired in your direction, I guarentee you all put a stick out in front......Hockey is too fast to refrain from making that 'reflex" with your stick......he gives SOOOOO many incorrect tips. Like where he tells a D-man to put a stick on a one on one or two on one or whatever.......My point is, listen to Don for entertainment, but if you want to make a cut, DON'T follow his hockey tips......they worked back in Don's day (maybe), but hockey teams are run like a well oiled machine now, and Don's machine was put out to pasture ages ago........So I tend to think his pick is just a fluke.

Trust me, every goalie hates it when sticks get in front of a shot, they've got it all planned out and the suddenly this puck just changes directions, on a crappy shot it doesnt matter cuz youll have time to react but any time a good defenseman shoots it w would be better off with all your skaters dead
what do Calgary and a tea bag have in common- they're both only good for one cup
I dont agree with alot that the guy says, but he is a goalie, he might no a bit more then you. As for Don picking those teams a do remember him picking those teams to make the finals as well. I love how everyone is saying they picked anahiem to make the finals, I will tell the truth, VANCOUVER VS TAMPA BAY!! to bad that didnt happen.

Posted - 06/04/2007 : 19:22:38 Tonight Cherry was on NBC and he did indeed say he picked OTT and ANA for the finals with ANA winning. Smart man. Brett Hull's also going for ANA. Hull's my favorite commentator, always thinks things through and he and I often share the same opinions about stuff. So far game 4's tied 2-2, we'll see if ANA charges ahead like Cherry predicted. |

Posted - 05/24/2007 : 16:46:07 I'm not sure if he did, but if he did it would have been all luck( I picked anaheim and buffalo at the beginning too, but I hoped for Colorado and Montreal)

Posted - 05/24/2007 : 02:22:53 I remember him specifically making this prediction and I wasn't fully on board with it (I felt it would be Buff vs Ana). But it was a pretty safe pick though, nothing amazing. As far as the secondary part of this topic, I think Don is spot on about many things. But things are different now : shots come faster, drills more intense, science, equipment, etc. Keep in mind he is still at the rink every day and he knows full well about these evolutions. However, he hasn't played in game situations with all of these advancements and can only speculate. It is a darn experienced speculation though. And at least he picks a side and goes with it. Many broadcasters are too delicate about possibly stepping on toes. Don doesn't care. He's seen it all. He's pretty comfortable about his beliefs and no-one's going to change them. Even if he's becoming out of touch with certain aspects of the game, there are some things about it that never change (and he will never be outdated about) : being an honourable person, sticking up for those around you, doing the right thing no matter what, leading by example, perserverance through the toughest of times, working as a team, battling hard but clean, not being afraid to fight when it is called for, knowing when to stop a fight, etc...etc.. These are all metaphors for life. Lessons for life. These are the most important elements to watch him for now. |

When the season began I predicted it would be Anaheim and Buffalo in the finals...and it almost was (but that's another story ) |
