Good point... except... the only reason he was cleared was because none of his teammates would talk. No one would officially name names, and everyone protected everyone else. There was no option, therefore, but to clear him.
If you remember those same Olympics, there were two players, unnamed, who said - off the record - that Chelios was the ring leader that initiated the whole thing. Unfortunately they would not say so on camera, and Chelios was, therefore, cleared.
So, maybe it was a little guilty conscience that made him pay for the chairs.

Interesting and entirely possible. I didn't hear about that part of the story. Who was it that reported the off the record comments?

"You are not your desktop wallpaper"

It was never reported who said that, as they only agrred to comment off the record. I think that one was believed to be Mike Richter. It was also said that one of the players was a "rookie' on the interntaional scene and didn't want to jeopardize any future chance to play for the US team.

Those are a couple of good points that I either forgot about or were unaware of.

However, Chelios has the highest penalty minutes of any active player, and other than Tocchet and Verbeek, is the highest "non'enforcer" on the list. Not to say this automatically makes him a dirty player, but it also doesn't make him a saint.

He has done some good things off the ice. After reading about Chili's kids and the stuff from the American team, he's not all bad.

I still think there were better leaders out there this year. Sakic comes to mind right off the top. The guy's class all the way. The real Captain Canada. I would have easily give him this award over Chelios.

Yes, except it wasn't the typical robotic response. When I heard him say it I could tell it was in all sincerity.

Well Willus, his style of play has never lead to any kind of sportmanlike recognition. I don't have any specific examples, however I feel his style of play borders on the dirty/chippy side of things.

And agree with him if you like about his dislike for Bettman or whatever. Those kinds of things are better handled behind closed doors. He was very outspoken about things he disagreed with, as was JR and others. The players I considered true leaders in the sport (Yzerman, Sakic, Lemieux, Linden) were very tight lipped out their own opinions and all talked about how they just wanted to get back to hockey. That shows true class and leadership to me. Even a guy like Linden who was, if I recall, the top player's rep on the union side was very classy in his conversations about the NHL-NHLPA relationship during the lock out.

Chilios just hasn't shown me a lot of classy moves on or off the ice. Are their situations that I have overlooked??

I don't know if you've overlooked them or not but here's acouple instances.
When the US olympic hockey team trashed their hotel Chelios was cleared of having anything to do with it but he voluntarily paid for all of the repairs required . I'm sure he must have been quite ashamed of his teammates.

When the US beat Canada in the 96 World Cup Chelios was incredibly humble afterwards and said some very complementary things about Canada and Canadian hockey. He said something to the effect of 'it feels really good to win but this is still Canada's game. They are always the ones to beat'.

Only one guy a year wins the Lady Byng so a lot of other players are in the same boat in not being recognized for their sportsmanship.

I could never hold it against him that he vocalized what everyone else was feeling and wanted to say at the time of that lockout. Not saying something that needs to be said is not necessarily classy. Sometimes things should be said. I think that was one of them.

If I thought I had a reason to I would.

See, I totally disagree. Weather Chilios is a chippy player or not is up for discussion. However, the greatest leaders of the game were not dirty chippy players. Other than Bob Clarke, is there another guy in the history of the league who was considered a dirty player and a great leader?? They do not go hand in hand. You don't hear guys say, "Man, Tiger Williams was a great leader." Or, "Ulf Samualsson sure made us players want to dig a little deeper and pull out a win."

I completely disagree with you Patch. Class and Leadership do go hand in hand and you do have to show class to be a great leader.

Leadership is more than on the ice and in the dressing room. As a team leader, you are that team to the media and the fans.

again y0ou guys are missing the point the award isn;t about class thats the lady byrd trophy (i think or something like that) this award is for a player whos leadership brings the level of play of the players around him up,,,, he could be the least classiest player in the league but if he scores the most goals he'll still get the maurice richard trophy?? its the same thing just cuz he plays a chippy cheap style of play and is a loud mmouth does not matter this award is about the player who steps up in the locker room and makes his teamates better!

the guy is a horse he's an old school tough guy and the award isn;t for being the cleanest most politically correct player ,, we have an award for that ,, the award is for the guy who steps up and meere prescence brings his team and fellow players game to a whole new level.. sure chelios is out of his prime sure he still plays the old school game,,,(pronger does too along with many other d men from the older generation) the award is not based on his skills on the ice thats what you are forgetting the award is baesed on what he brings to his team and the game and lets face it his love and dedcation to hockey is beautiful,, and that alone can lead a team,,,

I agree completly with you willus he was extremely good at his prime and tries all the time every night. Also bean after the Aneheim and Wings series right after the game ended he ran right over to the ducks coaching staff and congradulated them all.

GO DUCKS. YAY GIANTS

He is old, slow, and dirty. It's a shame too, because he was a talented defenceman, one that few people wanted to play against. Now he's a wannabe that should be hanging off a rocking chair, not off of younger, more talented players.

Ultimatetitman,
fair enough, but if you think he is dirty now perhaps you don't recall what he was like through his career, and especially early in his career. His excellent defensive skills weren't the only reason guys hated playing against him. I'm very curious what you think of Pronger's play then if you think Chelios is so bad. Pronger has made zero adjustment from the pre-lockout days.

I would say anyone who doesn't think he deserves this award doesn't know enough about him. The true leader of the team doesn't always have the letter designation on his jersey.

Beans, I think Chelios is actually a classy guy. It may not always seem like it because he wears his heart on his sleeve. He gives the respect to people he feels is deserved. For instance he has incredible respect for Canadian hockey and its players and he has zero respect for Gary Bettman.
I'm not sure why he wouldn't have shaken hands after the series but I would bet he had a reason.

Sorry Willus I can´t take that article seriously, not when 1/3 of it is about some flu-medicine. To me that´s tacky or a part of american "culture" I never will get used to.

Chelios has/had a great career as a ´hockey player though.

(Time differance Pickuphockey-Sweden approx +9 hours 1min 5sek......so I can always blame it on Jetlag.)

Shocking. After skating off the ice at the end of the ANA series and not shaking hands with the opposition. This award has quicky became a joke in my opinion.

more important question is why the hell does Messier have an award named after him! Sheesh! Blatant adversizing for Cold-FX is the only motivation for such an insult to hockey fans.
