Posted - 07/09/2007 : 05:47:20 I don't think you can afford to lose Vanek if you're the Sabres...if you do you're basically saying that next season's a loss. Losing your 3 top scorers is too much of a loss for them to handle, even a team as deep as Buffalo. Now, with the draft picks they could rebuild, but at the same time, assuming they didn't do anything in free agency this year or next year, the next two seasons would likely be at a loss.
Both Vanek and Briere are way overpaid. I believe that Buffalo's made a huge blunder this year. They could've signed Vanek to an extension during the season and avoided this mess. They also had an offer into Drury last fall...reports say 4 years at about 5.4 mil a season, and Drury accepted, however, the Sabres never pulled the trigger. Briere reportedly would've taken the 5 year $25 mil contract he wanted last summer in February. It's amazing to me that they couldn't keep all three...at least two would've been sufficient.

Right now I think the best move for the Oilers is to flunk for 1 or 2 years and get some good rookies through the draft and hope for some big UFA signings in the future. Don't get me wrong I would love to have Vanek on the Oilers but not for 4 1st-rounders.

Yeah, Vanek woulda been nice, we have a good, young core, but no leader. Ethan (as Beans says) bleeds blue and copper, but so should every member of the TEAM. The captain has to inspire his successor. |

Posted - 07/08/2007 : 11:20:54 Well I believe that Vanek has a lot of potential but is not worth 50 million$ in 7 years. This season him and Afinogenov will be there offence and he would have to step it up . Sabres should get him if they want the cup pretty soon. |

Ahh good. Go with the Sabres, Vanek. They need some good offense.
I had no idea this was going on and when it said that oilers sign vanek i was so surprised
what do Calgary and a tea bag have in common- they're both only good for one cup |

Posted - 07/06/2007 : 10:06:00 Buffalo matched the offer, that means they feel that the leadership, and talent of both Briere and Drury did not mean that much to them.
Vanek is youg, but seven years at 50 mil...good luck Buffalo...

Posted - 07/06/2007 : 09:57:56 Hmm. This is a strange thing. Vanek came to the sabres as a power forward rookie. He still is one. With four 1st rounders Buffalo gets 8 more shots at finding some more strong rookies in 4 years(including their own picks). These picks are tradable which would let them make some nice deals. It could be very profitable, VERY profitable. The team isn't really in a rebuilding mode so I'm not sure they would want to take the risk. At first I analysed this..I though Buffalo should keep Vanek..Now the idea is growing on me. |

Posted - 07/06/2007 : 09:17:52 I just saw that on TSN...I swear, if Vanek leaves the Sabres really are doomed. He was second on the team in goals, and without him, Zubrus, Briere, and Drury we are sunk. It just keeps getting worse and worse for Buffalo. I reeeaallly hope he stays with the Sabres. |
