Exactly they have the best rookies. Rookies are trying the league out and half of them may need more time. I don't see LA making the playoffs this year. They need to improve goaltending too.

LA's top six:
Cammalleri
Frolov
Kopitar
Handzus
Nagy
Calder/O'Sullivan

That is an awsome top six. Then on defence, Blake, Stuart, Preissing, Visnovsky. If they get a quality netminder, then they are in the playoffs, or atleast I think so. You never know, one of their goalie pick ups could turn out well in camp.

To Leafsfan_101

1. Detroit - Agree. They could and should be here at the end. Weak division helps them.

2. San Jose - I doubt it. Anaheim is still very strong and they should finish #2. I just can't see how Ana could be that much worse. Sure, Selanne, Neidermayer, and Penner are losses. But Bertuzzi(if healthy) and Schneider are more than suitable replacements.

3. Vancouver - Best team in the division?? What?? Firstly, they would have missed the Playoffs last year without the Real League MVP in net leading them to a great 2nd half of the season. Secondly, Minnesota finished only one point behind, and if Gaborik can stay healthy all year, The Wild will more than likely win this division. They have lost really nothing. Colorado if far improved and are a better team on paper than Vancouver. Even Edmonton has improved, although they are not as good as Vancouver. Minn is in the 3 hole.

4. This is where SJ should go.

5. Colorado or Minny, who ever doesn't win the NW will be 5th.

6. Dallas - Still a solid team. Remember they had a lot of injuries last year and still competed with SJ and ANA.

7. Calgary. Unless they can improve on their road record, they could be a surprise to many. They had the best home record in the league last year. The Saddledome is an extremely tough place to find a win.

8. This will be a sleeper. Vancouver more than likely, but Nashville or LA could surprise. Edmonton has a very outside shot if they can pull a trigger on a trade for a top 6 forward very early in the season. Adding Souray and Pitkanen shores up the D nicely, and Penner will add some scoring and more toughness. Don't forget that the Oilers had more than 50% of their line up injured at one time last year, and guys like Torres and Pisani had the worst years of their career. I wouldn't count on the Oilers, but I wouldn't count them out either.

I agree I don't see them making the playoffs either, but in a few years as their rookies develop, I don't see why they wont be making the playoffs or even making a run for the cup. For this year I say watch out for Pittsburgh and the Rangers. Pittsburgh made a huge improvement last year and got knocked out in the first round, but now their rookies have experience in the playoffs and with the other teams, so watch out for them I don't see why couldn't make a run for the cup. Rangers really stocked up on the offence, as what they lacked of in the playoffs this year so watch out for them, as i see many players on that team having a beak-out season.

Just before I post my Western Confrence I would like to say that if Philly doesn't make the playoffs this year,or has a horrible year, I wouldn't be suprised. The moves they made will improve them but I don't think enough for a playoff push. Just wait for vanRiemsdyk. But without any further ado my Western Confrence.

West

*1. Detroit Red Wings- Great Mix of young and old. They didn't really need to do anything drastic, but they upgraded Schneider with Rafalski and that will pay dividends.

*2. San Jose Sharks- The Sharks lost Hannan and Guerin but still have a strong core. I put them second because I don't think the Ducks will be here.

*3. Vancouver Canucks- Simply the best team in the division.

4. Colorado Avalanche- Totally helped the team with the addition of Smyth. I like where this team is going.

5. Anaheim Ducks- losing Penner, Selanee and Niedermeyer will hurt tremendously but will not stop the Ducks from a playoff berth.

6. Calgary Flames- Nothing new here, just a solid hockey club.

7. Minnesota Wild- A dangerous team all throughout the year. I wouldn't be suprised if they fall as high as 5th.

8. Nashville Predators or Dallas Stars- Once again I have a dark horse for this devision. I think that Nashville can make the playoffs, their team won't be as strong but they will get in.

Open your eyes.

Wow, I can't believe you are putting Montreal and Toronto ahead of Buffalo. Sure they lost Drury, Briere and a rental from Washington, but really look at the team again vs. Montreal and Toronto line up. To a man Buffalo is better the better team. Their coaching staff is unchanged which means top notch.

This year Buffalo will roll out 4 lines. Line 1, 2a, 2b, 3.
Last year Buffalo rolled out 4 lines too but more like: 1a, 1b, 1c and 2.

Toronto's 4 lines 1, 2, 4, 5 (strength in relation to Buff)
Montreal's 4 lines 2, 3a, 3b, 4 (strength in relation to Buff)

Sorry but i think that losing both drury and briere will hurt the sabres to much. The problem is that they didnt get anyone close to replacing either of them. They wont be a bad team but i still think that they are gonna ahve a really bad season. Depth or not, they wont have the talent to get them into nexts year post season. Also, toronto and montreal are both as good or even better then buffalo right now. Considering that they both beat 2 time last years, they shouldnt have aproblem this eyar with them. Im still gonna stand by what i said. If buffalo is to make the playoffs, it will be a low seed.

Here is my two cents worth.

East

*1. Ottawa- Team is still solid even if their backup costs more then their starter. Next year is the problem.

*2. Pittsburgh This team is looking really strong. Good mix of veteran leadership and young talent.

*3. Tampa Bay- You can never could out the Bolts in the weak SE division.

4. Buffalo Sabres- This team has depth with or without Briere and Drury. They won't be to far off.

5. New York Rangers- Sather busted the bank on offence and forgot about the defence. That could hurt them. A trade is also coming very soon for NYR.

6. New Jersey Devils- Losing Rafalski and Gomez hurt but this team still has talent.

7. Toronto Maple Leafs- Blake and Toskala but us over the bump this year.

8. Montreal Canadians or Boston Bruins- Boston has the talent to make a playoff push this year. The moves were unspectacular but will have effect. Montreal lost Souray. That hurts them especially on the PP. Kovalev has to step up his game for the Habs to make a run. My money. Its gonna be a toss up between the two.

* won division

Notes- I put New York at fifth because they needed to make some defence changes and didn't. Their offence is spectacular but it may fall a little short of expectations.

Buffalo will do well this year. I noticed I had them highest and Rangers lowest.

Boston is my dark horse. I really think they have a team that can, at least, make 8th. But the Bruins could fall apart too. Only time will tell.

Western Conference tomorrow....

Open your eyes.

They still have a lot of depth .

Pitsburgh
New York Rangers
Ottawa
New York Islanders
Atlanta
Tampa Bay
New Jersey

West (Again no paticular ordre)
Minnesota
San Jose
Anaheim
Los Angelas
Calgary
Vancouver

Minni might be the most under rated team in the league. They seem to get better every year. I guess people are still waiting for them to do something before they really consider them a threat. What I mean is they have yet to win a division title. After that happens people will start giving them the credit they deserve.
Guest9671 Posted - 07/30/2007 : 19:21:29
Is it me or is Minnesota the most under rated team on this site? They had a team without its most talented player for most of the season, rack up 104 points 1 behind vancouver for the division lead.

The offseason there has been minimal changes to the team and practically nobody is picking them to crack the top 8 teams. Talk about really flying under the radar.

Do you really think LA with its new roster is able to increase its point total by 30 points? Do you think Nashville fire sale and still barely meeting the league minimum cap is going only lose 10 points?

Never too early for this Kashmire. It's a good summer time thread! I only spent about 10 minutes putting this together so I may change my mind closer to the season, but here are my preliminary picks

East
Pittsburgh
Ottawa
Tampa Bay
NYR
Buffalo
New Jersey
NYI
Boston

West
Anaheim
Detroit
Calgary
San Jose
Colorado
Dallas
Vancouver
Nashville

1 - NYR* - most improved offence with Drury and Gomez. That defence is questionable
2 - OTT* - not much has changed
3 - CAR* - will have a better year in the weaker SE division
4 - PIT - not much has changed
5 - PHI - much improve off season
6 - BUF - too much depth, but will hurt w/o Briere and Drury
7 - NJ - you can't count them out, they still have Brodeur
8 - ATL - not much has changed

TB - no goalie and questionable D.
TOR not enough changes will battle ATL for that last spot.
MTL no significant changes made
NYI lost too many top end players
WAS watch out for this team as they will give teams fits but needs a defence corp upgrade

West

1 - ANA* - how can you not like them with or w/o Nieds
2 - DET* - strongest team of a very weak division
3 - MIN* - 104 points last year was no fluke and they'll have Gaborik for the whole season.
4 - SJS - no significant changes to be concerned
5 - COL - nice new additions will put them back in the playoffs
6 - DAL - solid team last year and still a solid team this year
7 - VAN - one word, Luongo
8 - LA / CAL - tough call. LA has made some crazy additions. CAL is still tough and will battle it out.

NAS - lost too much but will be tight in the race.
EDM - lost their heart, recent changes won't account for 20 point increase needed.
STL - will surprise with the changes they've made.
