Who is the best player to ever wear a Calgary Flames uniform. (Please post anonymously). |

Lanny was well under a point per game with the flames, and had a overall plus minus of -3. Fleury had over a point per game, plus minus of 148. So what did Lanny have better then Theo? Heart? I think not. I wouuld match Theo's heart against any player ever. Lanny was a much better leader, but this contest has to go to Theo. Granted, in a few years Jarome will take his place, but right now, Theo Fleury no question.

As my brother would say if they Wore a Flames Jersey they are all great. Flames fan can you tell.
My vote was Lanny .. Close 2nd is Jarome. They are the heart of the team from different Generations.

Tough call but it is between Nilsson or (knees) Nieuwendyk for me... I remember some very interesting games with Mr. Kent (box of chocolates)Nilsson he sure could dangle and Niewy gave the same effort every night all out...................... |

Al MacInnis is a serious contender:
822 points in 822 games as a Calgary Flame (weird?)
Won them a Cup in 89 (31 pts in 22 games)
88-89 Conn Smythe Award
82-83 Max Kaminsky Award
And the biggest shot in the NHL the whole time he was on the club

What? The Oilers were more than Gretzky?? Who are you kidding! Without Gretzky the Oilers would have been worse than the Canucks through the 80's. Him hanging out and centre ice is what made that team great. Messier, Anderson, Kurri, and Coffey would have been average players at best without Gretzky.

Whatever happened to Loob? Definately underrated, but the best ever? As far as pure skill, Kent Nillson would rank near the top, maybe no.1! As good as those 80's teams were, there was a LOT of unrealized potential. Mike Vernon is another example of an underrated player. Maybe he played under the shadow of the likes of Fuhr, Roy, Liut, Moog, and other greats of the day, but he should not be overlooked. |

Well then clearly they weren't the best team or else they would've won the Cup. Gretzky certainly helped the Oilers a lot, but there was more to the team than him...remember Kurri and Messier, for example?
Anyway, Fleury would've been a good second because of his heart and dedication to the game, but Loob wins on skill. |

Actually Doug Gilmour was a GREAT Flame! He was a major contributor to them winning the cup in 89 (22pts in 22 playoff games!) He was there for 3.5 years and racked up almost 300 regular season points. But I will admit that he doesn't rank with Iginla, Vernon, McDonald or Fleury. |

Brett Hull, for the short period that he played for the Flames, actually played defence, if you can beleive. Calling him a great Flame, would be like calling Doug Gilmour a great Flame. Both great players, for sure, but anyone would agree that their best seasons were spent elsewhere. The Flames were a great team in the 80's, but to say they may have been the greatest in a different division is ignorant. It would have been wonderful to see Edmonton and Calgary in the finals every year of that decade, but the Oil would've won 8 of 10 anyway. Tim Hunter did ten times more for the Flames than Hull did. |

By the best I think the poster means who was the best contributer to the Flames as a player. Not which player had the best career, who might have worn a Flames jersey at some point in it. If it were the latter then Hull would be a good candidate, but I don't think that was the poster's intent |

The Flames were arguable the best team in the 80's. The problem was they were in the same conference as the Oilers. Just think how many times the Flames would have won the Cup if Gretzky didn't hang out at centre all game.
Regardless, the best Flame of all time was Lanny McDonald. Every year he was there they made the playoffs and he was the face(or should I say moustache) of the team for almost a decade. Solid leader a good old farmboy from Southern Alberta.
And Brett Hull a great Flame?? He played 57 games with them. Please. That's like saying Mark Messier was an all time great Canuck. |

I think it was Theoren Fleury. He played every game with heart and is therefore the best Flame of all time. |

Overall, I think it's Joe Nieuwendyk by a slight edge over Al McInnis, but in the year they won the Cup it may very well have been Joey Mullen. |

Brett Hull was not a great Calgary Flame. Joel Otto and Hakan Loob were great Calgary Flames. The best ever was Fleury, as far as I'm conecrned. It's all about the heart. |

For me it's Joe Nieuwendyk. I love his style of play and he's a fantastic leader. Fleury is a close second. Little spark plug.
Honourable mention to Gene Carr. One of the fastest players ever in the NHL until a car accident. Never quite the same after that. |
