Marleau's making 6.3 million a season now and he only has 11 points! Bueller could put more points up on the board than him.

Tucker 3.0 mil, to much for what he offers if you ask me...

How about Mattias Norstrom at 4.25 mil for Dallas, what has he done so far, 15 games, 0 points???

I don't necessarily agree with everything I say.

Norstrom is a leader, stay at home defenseman and he was injured. Can't tell how much he deserves yet.

Ellis or Mason?

Wade Redden. He cost Ottawa a chance of winning last spring because he is slow and 60% of the time freezes when he has the puck, under pressure. At least, as Beans said,Penner (and Vanek, etc.,imo) have potential, even if overpaid.
Macabe would be a close 2nd,but at least he can skate and isn't scared of physical play.I like Macabe but toooo much money.
Kubina is the same, good player for 2-3 mil.
Really the only guys on Beans list worth their salary, imo, are Lecavalier,St.Louis,Thornton,Luongo and Rafalski (With honorable mentions for Heatley and Iggy). The rest aren't worth what they get.

Not a chance that he would have played for Edmonton for the same as his original contract. He was signed as a restricted free agent, so Anahiem would have just matched the offer sheet. There is no doubt that the Oilers overpaid to get him, but they took a risk for the future.

Tell me if you think he would be overpaid with 40 goals and 90 points?? I don't think so.

And that whole think on Getzlaf and Perry, like the Caveman says, "What?" Firstly, both were signed in the off season so they were not UFA's or RFA's. The only way they go anywhere is in a trade, which is not happened. And how the hell do you think any team could get both of those players at the same time?? Getzlaf is on pace for 90 points this year and Perry for 60. Both are very young and will be great for a long time to come.

Like I said, What??

Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!!
nashvillepreds Posted - 12/03/2007 : 15:30:16
But do you think he would've played with oilers for as much as he got with his rookie contract?

People don't realize that when you bring a guy to a team who had success on another team, you are taking a gamble. So paying him MORE than he previously earned is a huge mistake! If anything, pay him as much.

Not more.

Some guys deserve the money they are making, great players. But some don't

Daniel Briere, great player but does he deserve 10 mil?

This was meant to be a forum about overpaid NHLers.

A big part of the problem is guys signed for more than three years at a time.

I think the only reason Phil Kessel could be compared to him is because of what happened to him last year. I think Kessel is most like Gagne actually, with his scoring abilities.

I'm thinking more the way Phil Kessel has been playing lately.

I meant Gagne contract wise, a bit more than he should be paid.

Alex Posted - 12/03/2007 : 15:14:56
No, I think he's more like Gomez. He doesn't play the same style as Gagne. He doesn't have the agility or the handles or the aerodynamics. If you know what I mean. He's too tough to be likened to Gagne.

Yes, but they can be [laying up front with Hemsky and Horcoff.

Penner has only 5 goals to show for it.

Here's a list of all the players in the league making $5 million of more this season. It might help a bit. Doesn't mean that there are players out there that are not overpaid making less than $5 million.

Briere, Daniel $10.0
Gomez, Scott $10.0
Vanek, Thomas $10.0
Jagr, Jaromir $8.4
Timonen, Kimmo $8.0
Richards, Brad $7.8
Lidstrom, Nicklas $7.6
Chara, Zdeno $7.5
Elias, Patrik $7.5
Smyth, Ryan $7.5
Lecavalier, Vincent $7.2
McCabe, Bryan $7.2
Drury, Chris $7.1
Hossa, Marian $7.0
Iginla, Jarome $7.0
Jovanovski, Ed $7.0
Khabibulin, Nikolai $6.8
Sakic, Joe $6.8
Datsyuk, Pavel $6.7
Thornton, Joe $6.7
Gaborik, Marian $6.5
Luongo, Roberto $6.5
Redden, Wade $6.5
Pronger, Chris $6.3
Souray, Sheldon $6.3
Fedorov, Sergei $6.1
Blake, Rob $6.0
Havlat, Martin $6.0
Kariya, Paul $6.0
Naslund, Markus $6.0
Rafalski, Brian $6.0
St. Louis, Martin $6.0
Theodore, Jose $6.0
Markov, Andrei $5.8
Turco, Marty $5.7
Giguere, Jean-Sebastien $5.5
Gonchar, Sergei $5.5
Hamrlik, Roman $5.5
Heatley, Dany $5.5
Kovalchuk, Ilya $5.5
Nash, Rick $5.5
Nylander, Michael $5.5
Schneider, Mathieu $5.5
Sundin, Mats $5.5
Kolzig, Olaf $5.5
Tanguay, Alex $5.4
Vokoun, Tomas $5.3
Gagne, Simon $5.3
Jokinen, Olli $5.3
Brodeur, Martin $5.2
Hartnell, Scott $5.2
Bergeron, Patrice $5.0
Kubina, Pavel $5.0
Nabokov, Evgeny $5.0
Savard, Marc $5.0
Spezza, Jason $5.0

I can't really say if there is one guy I think is head and shoulders over the rest. I think McCabe, Kubina, Theodore, Smyth, Vanek, of Gomez would all top the list.

And as far as Penner goes, he gets $4.25 a year. Might be high for his production so far. However, he is only 24. His contract is level loaded, so he gets $4.25 a year, every year through the 11/12 season. He has the potential to be a 40 goal 80+ point guy. If that's the case, he's in the class of Gomez making $10 million a year this year and $8 million for the 3 years after that.

If Penner turns into a Gomez type player, he's a steal at $4.25.

Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!!

Theodore, Vanek, Penner, McCabe, Holik, Raycroft and a whole lot of others. It is just the price of doing business in the entertainment industry. Same as movies. Some are winners and some are losers. Some players have an after-market payoff for their owners just as some movies bomb at the box office. Some players get over their initial shock of being a sudden millionaire and pay off in the latter stages of their fat contracts. Some movies go on to be cult favourites although they bomb in the theatres, but they generate millions in after market sales as rentals and retail commodities. I try not to get my head wrapped around contract issues to much. I don't really care what a guy is making as opposed to how he is playing. Some fans start to hate a guy because of his contract and I think this is totally wrong.

There's a smart thing to say!

6 million for a backup is a waste of money. This coming from the man who's public speaking is on Overpaid Athletes.

Seems like you know your topic well buddy

Slow down the posting I can't keep up!

Theodore may not get an extension but he doesn't look bad for a back-up goalie, as long as he's not getting paid 6 mil to get pulled.
