Of all the recent rule changes in the NHL I still dislike the shootout the most. Seriously, what's wrong with a tie? I know teams play for the shootout by playing defensively in OT. Also I believe every game should be awarded 2 points. Winner take all.

That is the problem with the current NHL brain trust and their goals, they have taken a great game and are slowly, bit by bit ruining it.
As someone once said if it aint broke don’t fix it.

Guest, that is completely against the goal of the NHL, to eliminate overtime. They want exciting hockey, they want a WINNER, they want there to be more to play for. They are not going to eliminate games that span more than 60 minutes of playing tme.

I would like to see the NHL eliminate the shootout and even OT during the regular season, if the game ends in a tie then it ends in a tie and both teams get to share the two points. Why give a point to a team that loses the game.
The shootout is the worse rule change/innovation introduced during the Bettman years.

I will agree, the shootout should not be worth a point.
HOWEVER I still like the idea in terms of quality of hockey game. It is fun, no question. But way out of proportion, that point system.
Maybe half a point? It sounds wierd, I know....
Thoughts?

No. I don't pray for shootouts. While I don't dispute the fact that they can be interesting and perhaps even fun to watch.
That's not the point. The point above was more a complaint about the "essense" of the shootout and the necessity of having at least one team win at the end of the game.
It's lame IMO. It creates too many points, gives no real sense of standings (like an above poster said) and cheapens the efforts of the team overall in getting to that tie.
Anyhow, I know posting as a guest is lame, but hey... I'm way too lazy to register and I usually just stop by to check how far I've fallen in my staff pool! LOL |

What is the problem of five minutes of dump and chase hockey? Is it that it is boring, which I think it is?
Well let me ask you something: first of all, is overtime THAT much different than regulation hockey? Before the shootout, did team play THAT much more aggresively?
But now my friends, the boredom is more than maid up for with highlight producing jaw dropping shootouts! Sure, the tewelth rounders are sort of boring...
But be honest with yourselves. When you watch a close game, don't you WANT to see a shootout? When it goes to OT, dont you HOPE that the tie is not snapped so that we can see a shootout? Answer truthfully.

From a fan standpoint, the shootout might be entertaining . . . but so is taking a shot at the net blidfolded from centre ice and turned around. 
I do not like the shootout. And, I definitely do not like any team getting a point for a loss - it goes against what sport is meant to be. There is a winner, and a loser. Or, there is a tie.
2 points for a win, 0 points for a loss, 1 point for a tie. Make it a 10 or 15 minute OT period, and keep it it 4 on 4 if it's more exciting (I prefer keeping it 5on5, but that's just my opinion).
But absolutely NO MORE POINTS FOR LOSING!!! |

I personally have no problems with the Shoot out but I stongly agree with the 2 points for a win, zero for a loss.
The shoot out is the closest thing to a coin flip in hockey. You don't want the risk, play harder in regulation and overtime.
I just hate watching that team play crappy dumps and chase hockey in the last minute of overtime just to take a shot at the extra point in the shoot out.
Either way, it's not like I think the shoot out adds a ton or it would take away a ton if there wasn't a shoot out. I just don't like 1 point for a OT loss. I think that straight dumb.

Not a big fan of the shootout myself, but my biggest issue is the number of points available due to the "forced victory" environment that the "Non-Tie" NHL has created.
I myself don't have any problems with a tie either after a 5 minute overtime or (going back afew years) simply after regulation.
Why is it that the NHL has adopted this type of finish to its games. The other major North American sports play overtime and finish when the game is done. MLB plays extra innings until it's all over. The NBA and NFL play extra quarters until its done as well. Can you imagine going to a Home Run competition after 12 innings, or a Free Throw competition after 4 minutes of OT. (What the heck... make it a longest basket or judged slam dunk competiion). Or how about a Field Goal competion in the NFL. Longest successful kick wins.
I don't like the shootout from an NHL standpoint, nor the 4 on 4 in OT (although I can live with that one really.)
If two teams play their butts off for 60 minutes plus 5, and at the end of that 60 minutes plus 5 it's tied, then so be it. One point each.

3 pts for a win is ridiculous, teams will need 100 pts to get in the playoffs, fans won't have any pt of reference when looking at the standings (and history for that matter - 100 pt season won't mean anything). If they're going to change the pts in any way it should be either 2 pts winner takes all, or if they want to keep the 1 pt, make it only for a shootout loss, no OT loss, but then teams might not take chances in OT for the extra pt... |

The shootout in my mind is a great innovation to add to the game. It gets the fans involved, makes good highlight reel material, gives teams a new dimension to add and lets the playoff picture become much more complex.
As to the quality of the OT period, I heard a suggestion that the scoring goes as such: 3 pts for a win in regulation / OT, 2 pts for SO win, 1 point for SO loss. This way, the game opens up. I think it is a great idea and should definitely be factored in, one way or another. The thing to look at is how equivalent the ratios balance out to which takes some math, but hey, they dont get paid for nothing!
