Posted - 01/24/2008 : 07:47:27 Which NHL team has thus far exceeded expectations the most?
Remember, I am talking about teams that exceeded EXPECTATIONS here, according to most hockey pundits before the beginning of the season. That means that Detroit might still be in the running for best performance, but Ottawa probably isn't, as they were expected to roll over everyone else.
Write in with your answer and reasoning why, as well as any other teams you think should get honourable mention.
My vote was for New Jersey, with close second to Detroit, followed by nods of the head towards Montreal, Boston, and Columbus. |

I think that of the good teams, Dallas and Ottawa are a pretty big surprise. And please don't change your avatar so frequently, it is hard to follow!

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 18:14:39 I personally think that Dallas is playing far better hockey than anyone gave them credit for. Most people wrote them off. They really didn't make any moves in the off season. Most people wrote off Morrow and Modano. No one figured Roberio to do anything. No one had Hagman or Niskanen on their radar. Both of their goalies are crusing along with +.900 save percentages and they have the 3rd best PK in the league.
I'm not sure where they were in the pre-season ranks but they are quitely leading the Pacific ahead of Anaheim and San Jose. They are also very quitely 3rd in the league and NO ONE is talking about them.
How about some props for the Stars.
Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!! |

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 13:39:29 Dear Alex, Um, as stated earlier - I already apologised for omitting the Habs. They deserve to be there, as they were projected to be life and death to make the playoffs by most - so far, excellent.
As to Pittsburgh - they are right about where many pundits expected them to be, if not a bit lower, actually. Check out those poolie mags if you haven't thrown them away - I checked mine.
I can't stress enough - this poll is for performance, based on EXPECTATIONS BEFORE THE SEASON.
As for the Hawks and Blues - they are around where they were predicted to be, in fact most thought St.Louis would be better than this. They expected a much improved division, and they got it. Unfortunately for them, Detroit is having a monster year, where most predicted a slight fall from where they were years previous.
So, I would love to add the Habs, but . . . er, how the heck do I edit?

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 12:21:11 How is that agreeing, I'm saying they're doing worse than expected and you're saying they're doing better. Well, I didn't know they were first in their division when I said that so, I take back what i said.

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 12:17:49 Nash doesn't that mean we agree? For a team not living up to potential, they are doing remarkable!
That was my point, you reworded it!

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 12:14:31 I say pittsbugh should be doing better. Recchi and Staal have been terrible this season. They are the difference makers. If Recchi was able to finish off the feeds he got from Crosby, they would've been a .600 team in their first 20 games. If Fleury, before his injury had over a .900 save percentage, they would've won more games. They should be on top of their division, or atl least, up to the level that new jersey is playing at right now.

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 12:11:35 Magazines, shmagazines The Penguins, without Fleury or even Sabourin for a while this month, Recchi (who played amazing last year alongside Crosby) are doing great. Think about it, Armstrong has become a third liner, Crosby is out, Gonchar is seeing a dip in his numbers...
Ya, Malkin is on pace for 10 more points than last year, but look at the rest of the guys and tell me that this team is not a surprise.
Look at the average, median and mode of their ages, and tell me they have depth, and leadership to win a cup. Look at their performance last year when lots of people picked them to win the round , and tell me they have what it takes to win a cup.
Look at how much the Rangers and Flyers bulked up in the summer. Look how good the Senators are. Look how much better, on paper, the Thrshers and Lightning should be (up for debate...) The Devils and Habs are also better on paper. And then think that Pittsburgh was second in the East as of yesterday.

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 11:04:28 I have to say New Jersey.
On offense their best player is Parise, a guy who may not even hit the 65 point mark this season. On his left he has the underachieving, injury troubled Elias and on his right Brylin, I believe. I thought they would be a .500 team tops. now they just explode into 2nd place in the east. they might have the best goalie in the league and a great coach but they can't do it all. They're playing as a team though and that's what helps them win games.
I thought they'd be around 8th not on top of a very tough division.
Ellis or Mason?

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 10:57:54 1) Detroit Red Wings - At best I thought they would be "Ottawa" good. Not this insane! On a record breaking pace.
2) Montreal Canadiens - 10 games over 500...who knew?
3) Philadelphia Flyers - people expected an improvement but not this much. They finished in LAST PLACE IN THE LEAGUE in 06/07! They are already 1 point ahead of their last year total with 35 games left. They've been in a divisional battle for first place all season. That is impressive!
I put them in this order but they could really go in any order in my opinion |

Posted - 01/24/2008 : 08:45:55 Oh shoot, I actually meant to have the Habs in there ahead of Philly . . . but yeah, they have definitely performed a heckuva lot better than anyone thought, I think.
Just like last year, when they were smokin' hot the first half. And then they missed the playoffs. |
