For those of you who don't know, a Gordie Howe hat trick is when a player receives a fighting major and has a goal and an assist in the same game.

I'm just wondering why they're called Gordie Howe hat tricks if he only has one of them career. They should be called " Brendan Shanahan Hat Tricks" The guy had nine of them.

The Leaderboard:

Brendan Shanahan 9
Keith Tkachuk 5
Jarome Iginla 5
Brenden Morrow 5
Sean Avery 4
Joe Thornton 3
Shane Doan 3
Vinnie Lecavalier 3
Bill Guerin 3
And then Howe comes in after a few others with one.

Ellis or Mason?

Pucknuts made a good point, and I agree with it.

Beans, I think the reason that most of the listed players are current is because they started playing or played in the dead puck era, the time when fighting increased in the NHL and only superstars could avergae close to a point per game.

Ellis or Mason?

How well do you we know stats in fighting and such were recored in 1945 when Howe stated playing Pro Hockey? It's hard to say.

I do agree with puck thought, it appear Howe had his "Hat Trick" in 1955. Brendan Shanahan was born 14 years after that!

Notice that these guys you have listed are all pretty current players?? In fact, they are all active players????

I think this stat is not widely recoignized and therefore not tracked and recorded very accurately.

Wayne or Bobby?? How about both!!!

I am not sure when Gordie Howe had his only "Gordie Howe" hat-trick, but it is possible that he was the first, and this is not a new phrase...all the players on that list were not born when Howe would have accomplished this feat...

Of coarse you know that this means war!
