Tonight, the Sharks will stage their "State of the Franchise" session at HP Pavilion. They do this every year. Team president Greg Jamison makes a brief speech. Then, any fan can ask questions of upper management.

It's a nice tradition. It's also traditionally not very enlightening. The trouble is, Shark fans are way too nice. Plus, Jamison and General Manager Doug Wilson are way too smooth and spin way too skillfully. They tend to answer every question without being pinned down on anything - or even managing to get their sport coats wrinkled.

In fact, here is how I expect it will go tonight:

President Greg: "Thank you all for coming. And thanks for supporting the Sharks. Here's how we assess the state of the franchise: While disappointed with the four-overtime loss that eliminated us in Dallas, the way we see it, this entire summer is kind of the fifth overtime. And we firmly believe we would have won the fifth overtime. So we're celebrating with special '5 OT CHAMPS!' merchandise at the Sharks Store downstairs. You can stop there on your way out. All right, any questions?"

Almaden Andy: "Who would have scored the winning goal in the fifth overtime, do you think?"

President Greg: "Our projection was Joe Pavelski. So we have a special commemorative T-shirt with his picture at the Sharks Store. They're in teal and black. All major credit cards are accepted. Next question?"
