In the NHL is there a need for a fighter?

absolutely need the fighter. Otherwise your stars will end up eating leather all game long. Can't sell tix if they are injured.

I agree with Slozo. Hockey is the only sport in the world that you can become professional "athelete" and get paid a million bucks a year for the sole purpose of beating the crap out of other people. I got no problems with fighting. I think it is a great momentum builder and I love to see two guys with even moderate skills go at it. But I don't like seeing Jody Shelly and Matt Johnson and other guys come out just to pick a fight. Go into boxing if you are gonna do that.

ya its true that a fighter is only worth it if he can contribute, or not be a liability

I see that I am in the minority, but I don't think there is a need for a true "fighter" in the NHL anymore.

Look at the rosters of each team. How many teams can afford to keep a true goon on their team anymore? Hardly anyone . . . any of the fighters that are left are also decent players, guys who are decent forecheckers, energy line guys, occasional scorers.

A s***ty team like my Leafs - we had Domi, who was actually a decent third line guy who could occasionally chip in with a goal. Then we had Belak, who in my mind was a borderline goon, even though the Leafs insisted that he could play defence (he couldn't) and could occasionally play on the fourth line as a checker (he was a massive liability). End result, he rarely played under a good coach with very few options to begin with - and now traded to dreaded Florida. Expect more of the same there, when they tire of his defensive gaffes.

No need for "fighters". A need for tough players? Hell yeah. Gritty checkers? Yessir. But a guy just to fight? Nope.

'nuff said.

yeah vinny is rare to fight though he did drop with iggy himself,,, but watching guyslike Bill Guerin , Big Bert in their haydays drop was fun to watch,,, maybe guys like Vinny fight less now because clearly coachs dont want their superstars fighting and would rather a fighter breaks his hand,,, but i love the idea of a Gordie Howe hatrick a tough guy who can score, hit , skate and fight thats my ideal hockey player!!

Yeah for sure i agree with everyone on this except the heavy weight shouldn't be a part of the game the best fights in my opinion is when you see jarome iginla and vinny lecavalier drop and go at it,, when guys like that fight its with passion!

Chicken-s***s need to be fed their come-uppance. If you don't like it, go figure-skate or something.

It can provide a boost and some excitement, but a heavy weight is not needed, mostly the best fights come from smaller players who just reeer back and throw tons of quick and nifty punches.

I believe there is. Fighting, hitting, anything physical sparks the team.
