Considering that Barry Melrose is only getting Stamkos 8:00min of ice average, would it be best to return him to junior.

No just More ice times

This is quite the discussion. I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in too...

1) Barry Melrose WILL be replaced should they continue to suck in TB
2) I think that everyone is on the same page that Stamkos needs more ice time
3) Look at someone like Sam Gagner last year in Edmonton, sure he wasn't a number 1 draft pick but he was young, started with hardly any playing time and has adjusted just fine to the big league.
4) Sending that kid back down to the Juniors would be a complete waste of time. A team like Sarna is the middle of the pack and going nowhere fast. Yes he would get playing time but not in an environment where he is going to learn anything new.
5) With the playing time that he's getting right now, there is nothing saying that TB won't let him go to the juniors anyway.
6) You're not going to put him on the top line with St Louis and Lecav because he's a center too...he was a great faceoff guy in Sarnia....

I think Barry Melrose should start to play Steven Stamkos more than 8:00 minutes a game and see what he's made of. And if he doesn't shine or come out of "hiding" in those next few games, I think it would be best for stamkos do go back to junior. Maybe score 40 goals. dominate with kids around his age, and compete in another world junior to boost his confidence . Before sending stamkos back to Tampa. Tampa is a progressing team, and I would geuss that this is not the best environment for a rookie where players could leave and things could change. To much for a rookie to handle. And wouldn't progress as great as he would if he had another year in juniors and returned back to Tampa when the team has progressed a little more and, therefore will be a better learning period for stamkos than it would be in a progressing team.

One of two things need to happen.

1. He needs to be given more ice time and needs to play with quality players

2. If he is not going to get quality ice time send him back to junior. Let him dominate there and build up more confidence.

He had a lot of pressure put on him and he is not the same calibre of player that Croshy or Ovechkin are.

Give him time to sink or swim either in the NHL or the Juniors

And you will notice that that is in 12 minutes over 2.5 periods rather than 8 minutes through 3. Looks like Melrose is starting to smarten up a bit

I think Melrose should give him more ice time.Guys like St. Louis are not really doing anything. This team is a joke right now. They have talent but no chemistry. I also dont think they should have gotten rid of Boyle. Im not saying Stamkos is great yet, but get him in there for the future of the team!

Never ever cut what can be untied!!!!

I agree with Beans on this one, Stamkos should get as much playing time as possible, NHL or not. Many swedish players takes one extra season in (the) Elitserien before going over so they have a bigger chance of getting playtime and minimise the risk of having to play in the AHL.

But, that's all my opinion. If I knew what the hell I was talking about, I would be a GM somewhere.

That´s what makes it fun, even most GM:s have as you know very different views on how things work.

I can not disagree more.

1) Stamkos is still a kid. And let's face it, #1 draft pick or not, the kid is not Crosby or Ovechkin. It is more common than not that a kids spends the year after their draft playing hockey in a place other than the NHL.

2) I think now that Stamkos has a taste of the league, he should know what areas to work on and focus on if and when he goes back down. I think he will develop better outside of the NHL.

3) I think keeping him up will do more damage than sending him down. Playing 8-12 minutes a game and get a point ever 7 or 8 games will do worse for his delevelopment then letting him go down and work hard.

4) Going back down will give him a chance to win, and potentially lead a winning team. He won't have that development opportunity in Tampa.

5) I don't think that Tampa will be getting the value on their money if they keep him up. Sending him back down after his 9th game will mean that he is still under contract for 3 years. If he says, only 2 years left.

But, that's all my opinion. If I knew what the hell I was talking about, I would be a GM somewhere.

I don't understand the philosophy of the Lightning. Signing a player like Malone for several years and mucho money. The guy played with Malkin last year and barely managed to get 50 pts. Is it that hard to get 50 pts in 82 games with a Malkin on fire???
The acquisition of players like Vrbata, Jokinen, Hall, Roberts is doubtful considering Tampa got rid of one of the finest defenseman in the league, Boyle. Overall, Tampa spent a lot of money but their team is not better than last year with Boyle and Richards.

Well i bet you Stamkos and Melrose are gunna have a party tonight because of Stamkos' assist.

In all seriousness, Melrose should give the kid more playing time. The guy can skate, pass and shoot like an NHL-ready player should be able to. Why isn't Melrose playing him? Because he probably wants to take him along slowly. Is this a good tactic? I don't know, but I don't really think it makes a difference whether he plays 8 or 18 minutes, this is still a Tampa team lacking chemistry. Their goaltending isn't sorted out, their best d-man is Andrej Mezaros and well, all of this put together won't equal to more wins for Tampa at the end of the day whether Stamkos is playing minutes or not.

But having said all of that, he should definitely be playing more minutes, maybe get him playing with Lecavalier and St. Louis on the top line for a few games to get his confidence up, and when he starts producing and gaining more and more confidence and experience, then let him anchor the 2nd line. If something like this doesn't happen, then Tampa will remain a one line team, and Stamkos will produce later rather than sooner.

He got his first point tonight, 2nd assist on lightnings 3rd goal.

I guess we could open it up and ask this about any young player, I did notice on Sat nights game Stamkos played 13 min with 3 shots and I agree the rest of the team is struggling. My thought would be if the team is struggling then either play your new star or send him back to junior for another year and continue to rebuild your team. It does a kid with that much skill no good to sit on the bench, he is ready to play at the NHL level. I also agree that Melrose is messing up a talented team, why would you hire Melrose?
Guest8776 Posted - 10/26/2008 : 22:16:39
Considering that the Lightning have only scored 11 goals in their first 7 games, I think it's more likely Barry Melrose gets fired than Stamkos getting sent back to junior. Nothing Melrose has done has worked so far. It's no good to say the kid is a bust (no one on that team is scoring, are they all busts?) because the coach won't play him, how do you know what he's capable of if you don't put him on the ice. The only bust in TB right now is the coach they brought back from the dead. He wasn't even a good analyst on NBC, I don't know why anyone would think he could make a good coach.

For a team that is struggling to score as much as they are with all this supposed talent they went out and signed this summer, maybe it's time for the lightbulb to get turned on and actually play the kid. Can't be any worse than the guys getting shutout that he's giving the minutes to now.
J-Dog Posted - 10/26/2008 : 17:13:06
Why wont they just put him on the first line with St-Louis and Lecavalier, he'll break out of that slump if he plays more and I think that as soon as he does he will become a decent player as far as stats go. From what I saw he can skate fine and can really shoot the puck, he just needs to end the drought before it ends up messing up his whole year.

Tampa won't take Taverse .. They need some Defense, in a big way.
Guest4735 Posted - 10/26/2008 : 16:19:16
i think for sure it would be best to either get him more ice time or send him down, but i don't think they will cause they publicized him so much down in tampa.
As for Tavares being better than stamkos, i believe it, but tavares has yet to play and isn't drafted yet, so we will see next year.
he might even end up in tampa bay
Guest6740 Posted - 10/26/2008 : 15:29:16
knew he was overrated sure laugh when someone picked him in my hockey pool good stuff hes better than tavares right right;)
