Didn't want to go off topic in that thread, so I started a new one. I know there are Brodeur haters, my question is why? He will be the most accomplished goalie ever by the end of his career, and he never once gloated about it. And for the record, he's one of the only purely reactive goaltenders left in the game, whereas the others turned the position into a science (a science that was for the record pioneered by Roy, not that I don't like him.) So all you haters: why?

Depends on which wife and which sister-in-law!

I'M KIDDING, I'M KIDDING! Of course, I don' respect that. But, I mean who knows what the story is. I think we as fans have to be careful about making really harsh judgments on these sports stars of ours with respect to their private lives. Any one of them, even the ones that might look like saints, Orr, Gretzky, Beliveau, Federer, Nadal, for example, may very well have certain stories which could be painted this way or that.

To me anything short of malicious vicious acts kind of gets a pass. The only real exception for me in the "non-murderer/rapist but simply nasty SOB of a sports star" category might perhaps be Ty Cobb.

Maybe it makes for an interesting new topic though.

Who were the nastiest SOBs in the NHL ever?

* not in terms of dirty play on the ice , but in terms of their off the ice behavior

I think as long as one remembers the qualification I mentioned at the start of this post, that you just never know what the total story is, it still might be a fun topic to chat about here (I'll copy part of the above and put it in a new topic in the History section).

Edit - Just reading about Ty Cobb, and even his story seems to have different angles, bad AND NOT SO BAD

Although I am not a huge fan of Broduer, I do agree that he is the best goalie in the league today and belongs along side the best ever.

However, just because a player is good, doesn't mean they are liked. For example, I had the biggest respect for Mario Lemieux, but I couldn't stand him. Found him terribly arrogant. Lindros, same thing. Hated the guy. But he was good.

So, the answer to your question is very easy. I can hate or like Brodeur as quickly and easily as I can like or hate any other player.

Skill, talent, and success has absolutely no impact on my like or dislike of a player.

What are you basing this on? In the last 3 years in the regular season(when the new rules were imlemented) he faces on average 27 to 29 shots per game. It is very close to 30 or more shots per game in the playoffs recently.

This year the average through 9 games is 27 and change. That means chances that he sees 30+ shots is pretty high with his no name defence that plays the trap "very well".

He didn't shake hands with Sean Avery. You are going to hold that against "fatso"? Are you kidding me?

The title you attached to my quote is very misleading. Hate is a strong word that I reserve for players such as Ulf Samuelson and all soccer players. Also, I've never said anything negative about his accomplishments, in fact I can't wait until he takes them away from Roy. I feel he's been displaying some poor taste and professionalism in the sportsmanship department. He really isn't the same person he was in the past. I really don't understand how you could respect someone on a personal level who cheated on his wife with his sister in law either. You may have also noticed he switched masks, this was done to promote his personal web page which will have a proshop open in November where you can buy your Marty Merch direct from him. And I won't even get into hand shaking incident last year......

Should we be in awe of Marty because he's a reactive goalie (first time I've heard this mentioned) and not a smart goalie?

I'm not taking ANYTHING away from him on a professional level...like I said in my quote, I have issues with him as a person...

I think the guy is a classy person. Small pads with huge success, unlike others who had giant pads to get near Brodeur's numbers and success. The guy is A1
