Top Choices for the 2010 Canadian Olympic Team

"First Line:
Jarome Iginla, Sidney Crosby and Dany Heatley - This great combination of power and skill would give Canada the best line in the tourney (depending on what Russia does). Crosby is Canada's prize jewel and Iginla, our best power forward, had the highest point total for a Canadian this past year with 98. Heatley was off his game a bit in 2007-08 but can still score and mix it up with the best of them."

Hey Waikiki Hockey! Glad you stopped by, my apologies for one of our members enthusiasm in "borrowing" your work. Hope you've gotten a little traffic from us in return. Again, here is the link gang.... http://waikikihockey.blogspot.com/2008/08/canadas-olympic-teamin-2010-part-1.html

I wouldnt totally counr out Simon Gagne..pending he stays healthy he is a fast hard working forward who can burry the puck. he was there for the last gold medal

just pray that crosby's not the captain. iginla all the way.

and i think they should re-unite the
nash-thornton-iginla line from the world cup
Guest2644 Posted - 11/20/2008 : 19:34:53
Forwards:

4th line: doan-M.Richards-morrow
extra: toews

Defence:
1st: phaneuf-weber
2nd: campbell-pronger
3rd: bouwmeester-green
extra: regehr

Goalies:
1: Luongo
2: Brodeur
3: price

Ok, I gotta post my line up and get everyone all riled up.

Forwards

Gagne - Sakic - Iginla
Nash - Crosby - Heatley
Thornton - Lecavalier - St. Louis
M.Richards - Marleau - B. Richards

Taxi Squad - Getzlaf, Spezza

Defense

Pronger - Neidermeyer
Phaneuf - Boyle
Redden - Campbell

Taxi Squad - Weber, Green

Goalies

Brodeur
Luongo

Taxi Squad - Giguere, Fleury

I can't remember how many players are allowed on the taxi squad, so I put two from each position.

Let's hear it. Tell me where the holes are in my team and why other players would deserve to make it. I personally think that my team would match up and beat any team out there.

Of course, this is assuming that all players are healthy and able to play. And yes, Joe Sakic, if healthy, is an absolute no brainer to put on this team. Broduer is the starter as well.

Guest8450 Posted - 11/13/2008 : 13:48:41
Lecavalier-Crosby-Iginla
Heatley-Getzlaf-Nash (i agree about the Chemistry in the WC)
Marleau-Thornton-Setoguchi (just because this line is having great chemistry right now, and if setoguchi can continue scoring like he is right now, why not?)
Doan-M. Richards-Morrow (this line would absolutely punish people)

Phanuef- Campbell
Pronger-Regehr (Regehr is honestly one of the best, if not the best shutdown D in the game, and this duo could really shutdown opposing offences)
Green- Weber (both are lighting it up right now, and weber can play the body very well too)

Luongo-Brodeur(pending retirement)-Miller-Turco... the list goes on and on

Id like to see Sakic in there as well, but it is very unlikely as injuries are becoming a problem, and given his age... he can still produce, and it would be great to have his leadership and knowledge in front of his hometown fans in BC

There is something that many people are missing. This is more than likely the final Olympic games that NHL players will be involved in. Both the NHL and the NHLPA have issues with NHL players being involved with the Olympics, especially when they are overseas. Both have also said the issue will be revisted during the next CBA negotiations. Shutting down the season for a 2-3 week span in the middle of the race to the playoffs is a revenue loss for the NHL. The teams also lose gate revenue with fewer games, and the risk of injuries to players is always a questions. Personally, I think the Olympics should be an amatuer event anyways.

Regardless, that is not my point. My point is that if this is the last Olympics the NHL is involved in, Hockey Canada (Stevie Y) should not and will not be concerned with bringing in younger players for them to get experience. They will ice the very best team they can at the time, regardless of who is young or old.

What I am thinking is that there are players today that are better and/or would be more effective than Toews. Off the top of my head, a few forwards that are not being talked about are:

Patrick Marleau
Simon Gagne
Alex Tangauy
Brad Boyes
Nathan Horton
Michael Rider

Consider that the scoring for team Canada will come from their top 2 lines. Most people would agree that Crosby, Heatley, Lecavalier, Thornton, Nash, and Iginla will make up the top two lines. This leaves players for the 3rd line, who should be more of the shutdown players who can still score and/or penalty killers and the 4th line for energy.

I am not saying all of the players I listed will or even should make the team, but c'mon, Patrick Marleau can play virtually every position on the ice and Simon Gagne has been at the Olympics before and performed very well. Both of those guys definately should be on the team before Toews.

Just my point of view.

I was thinking about Tanguay, Marleau and Gagne, but the only thing that keeps me on Toews is that he will have his game elevated to another level beyond these guys. I wouldn't pick Gagne or Tanguay for a forth line but Marleau would be a good fit for sure.

For my own team...

Forwards:

Heatley- Crosby - Iginla (Top centre with arguably the top 2 pure goal scorers)
Lecavalier-Thornton- Nash (See above)
Getzlaf-Spezza- Perry (Chemistry with Getzlaf and Perry shouldn't be a problem for the giveaway (not to mention point) machine Spezza)
Staal-M. Richards-Morrow (Staal will be on this team for sure, with Richards and Morrow having proved themselves last year. Call this the "recently became captain" line)

Toews as an extra, but he may make his way onto the team with a good year this year.

Defense:

Phaneuf- Reghyr (Canada's top shutdown line, with offense coming from Phaneuf)
Neidermeyer (if he decides to play)- Pronger (Self-explanitory)
Green-Boyle (Point producers)

Extra Defense- Campbell

Goalies:

Brodeur
Luongo
Giguere

Savard - unless his game changes in the coming years is out.
Spezza - ditto
Toews - ditto

Doan, Morrow, M. Richards - all meet the criteria

B. Richards, J. Staal - are on the bubble but have to show more consistent abiltiy to put (or help put) the biscuit in the basket.

I agree with Spezza that is why he is a spare piece just for extra offense. Toewsisn't bad and will definitely get better as well. Savie is good too, but he doesn't have to be that good since he has Thornton and E. Staal who are both awesome in their own end.

As for B. Richards, I don't believe he will make this team and I do not like him as a player what so ever, I think he is way too overrated. J. Staal though has been playing 4th and 3rd lines for the Pens which has changed his role and decreased his ice time, but this makes him a perfect fit for team Canada I believe.

Wow, I didn't realize that you would be so bothered by my posts. I put it in quotes, I just found it interesting and I wanted to see what other people were posting. I enjoy reading everyones post and getting everyone perspective. I have been reading the differnt topics here and it seems that the same one get replies but no new material gets posted so I thought I would get people thinking "out of the box". Sorry if I offended anyone.

Yeah I understand, but both Staals, Savie and Lecavalier played wing before in certain situations and all players are capable of playing the wing. Lecavalier in particular played wing for team Canada in the WC.

Heck to make this interesting or maybe even another topic, lets throw the coaches into the mix. With your roster name your coaches as well. I changed my above roster by adding the coaches.

I see what you are saying Porkchop. Perhaps next time TimHorton will cite his sources rather than claim it as his own (unless he is the actual author at the other site???) Out of respect for the author of the original statement please feel free to visit their web site: http://waikikihockey.blogspot.com/2008/08/canadas-olympic-teamin-2010-part-1.html

Porkchop, there is no need to take such an aggressive stance my friend. The site you posted and ours are not the only ones discussing the 2010 Olympics and the Canadian roster predictions. Plus, we have been discussing it here for a couple years at least. This is just one more post about the subject. Here are a few more:

FORWARDS

Lecavalier - Crosby - Iginla [Great line, no holes what so ever.]
Heatley - Getzlaf - Nash [Canada's best team in the WC, great chemistry, huge size, very physical, why mess with it? Only question will the chemistry still be there?]
E. Staal - Thornton - Savard [Huge offensive upside, while players being phenominal in their own end and neutral zone, one factor remains either Thornton or Savard will have to start finishing since this line posesses two of the best playmakers in the game today.]
J.Staal - M. Richards - Toews [One day will take over the reigns of the heart of team Canada. Very physical and good size, and no one can question their offensive abilities.]

Extra - Spezza (alot of problems with his complete game, can fill in for any line with lack of offense.)

DEFENSEMEN

Phaneuf - Campbell [The phyiscal play of Campbell goes unnoticed by many, but he can dish them out like the best. This line is hard hitting, offensive, and can play real good D. Campbell brings the speed, Phaneuf bring the old time, hard-nosed hockey.]
Pronger - Boyle [ The leadership and experience of the Defensive core right here, excellent knowledge of how to play the position, physical, offensive. Almost a mirror image of the first d line only about 15 years older.]
Burns - Green [Tons of offense here, with alot of physical play. Only hole is the experience but I'm guessing they will be getting that this year in the WC pending their teams performance.]

Extra - Weber [Basically just no room but any lapse in the play of any of the above players and Weber will be in no question.]

GOALIES

Brodeur
Luongo

3rd - Price

If Brodeur retires, count Fleury in.

Chicago Blackhawks GM

I love this team, but a couple things I would personally change:

Instead of J. Staal, put in Morrow
Instead of Price, sub in Giguere
Matt_Roberts85 Posted - 11/12/2008 : 12:08:00
I wish we could send 3 teams.
Here are my picks:

Lecavalier - Crosby - Iginla (Captain)
Nash - Getzlaf - Heatley
E.Staal - M.Richards - Toews
J.Staal - Thornton - Morrow

Phaneuf - Pronger
Green - Boyle
Burns - Orr (hahaha......)
Campbell

Luongo
Brodeur
Price

There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E".
