. New York . Chicago . Vancouver . Montreal
I would like to see him go to the Blackhawks. That would be interesting

Posted - 12/21/2008 : 09:36:21 your right Alex, I did not proof read my post, I meant almost carried them into the playoffs himself.
I also like your point about better defense, there are also a lot of D men available, think Bouwmeester!
My main point is I think Sundin made the better choice because Vancouver did not have to lose anyone to make room, and have lots of room to improve. They have arguably the best goalie in the game right now. There is more upside to choosing Van instead of NYR. NYR would have had to shed talent to get him. Vancouver no doubt improved where I don't think NYR would have. Hopefully I made less mistakes in this post! |

Too bad they never made it to the post-season last year Otherwise, your points are good.
I would tend to agree that they need one more player to get this thing done, but who? If I'm not mistaken they have around 4(?) million in cap space...
Everyone is saying they need a forward, I'm not so sure a defense wouldn't be more helpful. Keep in mind they have Sundin, Sedin, Sedin, and Demitra up front. All of those guys can produce.
Maybe if Luongo wasn't the only guy on defense, they would be a better contender?

Looking at who the Canucks would subtract to add someone, 1.5 mil won't get you the cream of the crop. Simply put, I'd like to see how Sundin plays in Vancouver. I still don't think the Canucks could go head to head against Detroit, San Jose in the West, or New York and New Jersey, and come away with a series win. Sundin has had better teams in the past to work with (pre lockout) and if he couldn't get it done at that time, he can't do it now. Maybe he can and I'm wrong, but I would definitely doubt it big time.
I think if the Canucks get even close to the Wings and Sharks, they will and have to make another move to take shot. They have the right tools in place to be in a position to take a run for the cup this year, it all depends on how Sundin works out, does Luongo heal fullly (he carried them last year into the playoffs by himself), and do they add that last piece of the puzzle. Who knows maybe they won't need to get anyone else, but right now I think they need one more talented scoring forward even after adding Sundin. I like what they doing in Vancouver. Gillis may end up looking brilliant! |

Posted - 12/20/2008 : 12:03:50 [3 mil won't get you as much as you think. especially considering a smart GM will leave about 2 mil in cap space in case of injuries or any other unfortunate instances like that. I don't see how the West was a better fit though. He has to go through the Sharks and the Wings in the west, but in the East he has to go through a hot and cold Montreal team, a Boston team who has to fall back to earth at some time and other teams who are nowhere near as strong as their Western counterparts. If he were going for a Cup, the East would be a much better fit. Obviously the money was better in VanCity, so that's why I believe he went there. [/quote]
I beg to differ, 3 mil can get you one the following UFA's; Gaborik, Rick Nash, or even Kovalchuk on pro rated salary from the trade deadline. I would even include Zetterberg, Hossa, or Franzen in that list but I don't think the Wings are letting any of them go easily. The other three I mentioned are known to want a new home to play in. How about Jay Bouwmeester? If Sundin had gone to NY then the rangers would have had to shed talent to get him and I don't believe they would have improved themselves by doing so. Vancouver definetly improved and still has room to do more. The canucks may represent the best shot right now of bringing the cup home to Canada. How about a Nucks/Habs final!!!!!! |

Nice to see that Sundin is coming west. It will be nice to see the $10 million investment lead them to the 6th to 8th spot in the west and watch him golfing (or playing poker) by late April.
Beans I always enjoy your insight and I am usually in agreement with you. In fact I too thought the Rangers were the better team to go to for a shot a cup. But, looking further into this and reading several articles, Sundin looks to have made an excellent choice. The nucks will have to go through the sharks and wings for cup, and luongo will have to heal right to make it. What makes this interesting is they have almost 3 mil in cap space left. That kind of cash can get you another top player at the deadline. Imagine the possibilites for the nucks now.

Get over it, the leaf fans and management treated him like crap last year. You would never have seen the Wing fans or management treat Yzerman like that given the same situation, actually i don't think any other team or their fans would have treated their franchise leading scorer the same way. I don't agree with waiting so long to decide if your going to play, but Sundin earned the right to play where he wants and for how much he wants. So again I say to all GET OVER IT. |

Posted - 12/17/2008 : 23:16:36 As much as I do agree with Leigh on his assessment of Vancouver being more than a one man team, I still don't think that Sundin would have as good of a shot of winning a Cup if he heads west.
The thing that I can't get out of my head is that Vancouver, with Sundin, still doesn't beat Detroit or San Jose in a 7 game series. They would be hard pressed against Anahiem and Chicago as well.
New York, on the other hand, can beat any team in the East in a 7 game series today. Granted, not easily againts the likes of Pittsburgh, Boston, Montreal, or New Jersey, but they have a legitimate shot against any team. Add Sundin, and they are that much better.
Plus, I think that Sundin is a step up on Gomez. 5'11" and 200 lbs does not compare with 6'5" and 230 lbs. Sundin is more than a point a game guy while Gomez is not. Add in the fact that New York's offensive talent is better than Vancouver's, and I really think this is not much of a decision.
As I said above, if he wants a Cup, he finds it on Broadway. If we wants the cash, head west. |

Posted - 12/17/2008 : 12:35:45 I'm still torn, but leaning towards the Canucks. Obviously the Canucks have the immediate cap space. As many have stated NYR will have to unload a player or two...what will that do to the team's ability to win? Getting rid of Gomez for Sundin will probably be a wash this season. I just don't know that the Rangers improve much with Sundin (assuming they have to get rid of non-role players to fit him in)
Truth be told (from a Flames fan) the Canucks are a very good team this year. Certainly much better than anyone really believed they could be. But they don't seem to be over achieving either, they are pretty consistent. Even with Luongo out they are doing fairly well - a far cry from the "one-man-team" we all pegged them as. With Luongo in, they have a serious chance to go deep in the playoffs. Add Sundin into the mix and they become a bonified contender (naturally it will take Sundin 10 games to get into shape)
Personally I hope he chooses NYR so I don't have to see Sundin score on Kiprusoff this year. |
Beans15 |
Posted - 12/17/2008 : 09:01:04 Rumor is that if Sundin signs with NYR, they will move Gomez and Rosival. The other piece of that rumor is that many teams (Vancouver, Anaheim, Colorado, NYR) have been waiting on Sundin and all have other moves in mind if Sundin doesn't come play with them. Names such as Robert Lang and Matias Ohlund have been mentioned.
And who cares how many cetres a team has. The centre position is the easist position to move to a wing. It appears to be working well in Pitt with 2 centres on their 1st line.
As I said before, if Sundin wants to win, he goes to NYR if he wants to get paid he goes to Vancouver. |

Ahah I completely agree the need wings, no more centermen.

Posted - 12/15/2008 : 14:27:30 In my opinion, if anyone is getting Sundin, it's Vancouver (I say this because NYR would have to unload a player). They have the cap space, so it would be easy signing him. The reasons I think Sundin doesn't want to play for the Canucks is how they have to travel a lot, and the division they play in is very close (The difference between first and last could be a few points), so a birth in the playoffs is not a guarantee. As much as I hate the Canucks, can you imagine the Sedins centered by Mats Sundin, that would be sick! |
Guest4803 |
Posted - 12/15/2008 : 12:59:24 The Rangers would have to move someone in order to land Sundin, more then likely gomez ...where as the Canucks can simply just sign him and add him to their roster...So New York doesnt exactly get better by signing Sundin. The Canucks however become a much more dangerous team. Only Reason he would have a better chance at a cup in New York is because they play in the eastern confrence, The Canucks have been playing a more entertaining style of hockey this year as well, pretty sure they beat Nyr 6-2 or somewhere along those lines. |

Posted - 12/15/2008 : 12:55:25 With all due respect Beans, the Rangers aren't going anywhere in the post season. Roszival is terrible, Kalinin is even worse at -13 and Redden is always caught flat-footed. Drury is clutch but is currently doing sweet FA. About the only bright spots are Nazzy, Zherdev and Lundqvist. |
Beans15 |
Posted - 12/14/2008 : 14:32:40 I would say the best shot he has at a Cup is New York. Reason being is that the team is loaded with clutch players. Drury, Gomez, Naslund, Zherdev, Sundin?? That is sick. Throw in Lundqvist in net and Redden, Rozival, Kalinin and Stall on the blue line. Seriously, that is sick. Not to mention that they have fine role players (Dubinsky, Callahan, Varos, Sjostrom) that get their job done well.
The only think that has hindered NYR this is year is consistancy. They go from winning by 3 goals to getting shut out the next night.
Looking at that team, they are one of the top 3 in the East. If he goes to Vancouver, there is a reasonable chance that Vancouver doesn't even win their division. Having to get to the Cup, on the road, in the West would be far more difficult than with Montreal or NYR.
If he goes to Vancouver, he doesn't want to win the Cup, he just wants the money. |
goleafsgosjnb |
Posted - 12/14/2008 : 14:19:23 I'd want him to go somewhere he will be successful and win a cup, and that seems to be his #1 priority at the moment. I think Phili would have been a good fit, but Vancouver would be awful dangerous with a game stealer in net and a player as clutch as Sundin centering the first line.
As a fan of Sundin I really wnat to see him raise the cup; he deserves it, but as a Leafs fan, I will die a little inside if he does it as a MOntreal Canadian. Luckily I doubt I'll have to worry about that. |
