Posted - 01/11/2009 : 07:00:11 Wow. The Oil is now 21st, the Leafs still in 25th, and the Sens in 29th! I threw this idea out as something to chew on but this could actually happen!
Can you imagine Tavares-Spezza-Heatley-Alfredsson? Although I think they would trade Spezza or Heatley to pick up a defensemen if they did end up nabbing Tavares. But to be honest, I'm enjoying watching both these teams tank. It gives me a little pride as a Habs fan, but also hope that I might get to watch Tavares. Who woulda thunk it?

Posted - 01/07/2009 : 19:41:54 I've always routed for the Thrashers (aside from my home team), that was a great run to the playoffs a couple years back, but it's always been hard for them to hold onto talent (Heatley, Savard, Hossa)
Kovalchuk is kind of like Nash, singular talents on small market teams dieing for a couple more stars to augment their team, but it always seems like someone is leaving if they do acquire a new star.
If Atlanta had #1 overall I think they'd go with Tavares.
On D they already have a young core of Enstrom, Hainsey, Bogosian and Oystrick isn't looking too bad either. (they should never have traded Coburn)
Up Front they have Armstrong, Christensen, Little, Williams and Slater as the core below age 30 (not including Kovy), this front line does not inspire fear - I know they have Kozlov (36) and White (33), but they're not the future of the Thrashers. They'd have to draft another star up front to replace Kovy. |

If they don't trade Kovy this year, they will next year, because he does not want to be in a small market and will bolt once he's a free agent.
As much as i would love to see Kovalchuk go somewhere better, in a recent interview he said he loved being a thrasher and wanted to remain there for a while. Although that was bit ago, and if i were him i would be sick of losing. I do hope he does go somewhere better, so he can show his true talent. I dont think many hockey fans realize what kind of a force this guy is, he is for sure in top ten for skill in NHL. His defensive skills could use a bit of work, but other than that, he is one of the best. Back to Tavares, you might be right, Kovalchuk may be gone before Taveras gets a chance to play there(if he is drafted by Atlanta). But still, him and Espisito back on a line? I loved watching the world juniors, they had great chemistry. Hopefully Tavares goes to a team that shows a lot of promise in the next couple of years. Atlanta has some good young players, like Little, White, Espisito, Chriestenson, and Armstrong. With a couple decent free agents, drafting Tavares, and thankfully a fairly weak division(other than Washington), they could be back in the playoffs in 2 or three years. |

Posted - 01/06/2009 : 23:15:27 I doubt the Oilers will finish in the bottom 5. They have games in hand on all but 4 teams, and will be playin alot at home. Also, cole and gagner are starting to play like they were expected to. And if you really want to think deeper, if they winn all of their games they have in hand on vancouver, they will be tied with them. I really expect the oilers to make the playoffs and if they miss that will be a great disappointment |

Hrm, perhaps "Will Tavares be drafted #1 overall" would have been a more appropriate question.
Far too many factors to consider, to decide "Yes" or "No" as to whether or not he'll be picked by a Canadian team.
We'd have to assume a lot of things here, that is just impossible to tell right now.

Even if Tavares doesn't go first, there is almost no chance he wont go second. And as bad as Ottawa is this year, they are no wear near the bottom feeders that are Atlanta, Islanders, Lightning, or even the Blues. Tavares could be drafted fourth overall, and unless a Canadian team trades up to get him, there is almost no chance for him to go to a Canadian team. Unless Ottawa throws the season(which i cant think of any team doing just to get the first draft pick, and Murray also guaranteed Ottawa to be a playoff team by the end of the year) then Tavares will be staying below the 49th parallel. I do think Ottawa should trade away Spezza of Heatley to one of the worst teams toward the end of the year to get the first round draft pick, because something needs to change in Ottawa. Hopefully Heatley gets stuck on the Islanders with DiPetrio for the rest of his career, because every Atlanta fan knows thats what he deserves haha.
As it stands now, Ottawa is 4 points ahead of the Islanders, who are last in the nhl, tied with tampa, and behind St louis, so they have a shot right now it would seem at tavares. Even Toronto is ahead of them by 6 |

lets pray he's a leaf ! :D

Did you just call LA a horrible team? Wait until their prospects fill out. This team is scary good. Jack Johnson, Doughty, Kopitar, O Sullivan, Brown, Frolov, Moller, Purcell and a possible pick of Hedman or Tavares I like the look of this team.

Ottawa and Edmonton won't finish close enough to the bottom to have a chance, and T.O. will probably end up having there annual season end push for 9th-10th place in the conference, so Tavares and Hedman will like go to NYI, LA, TB, STL or ATL.
If Tavares ends up in Atl, I see that as his worst chance for success in the NHL.
Looking at the rosters... a lot of these teams really need defence, and a back line of Doughty and Hedman sounds pretty good, or Bogosian and Hedman, etc
Getting far off topic though... to bring it back. I doubt either of these top prospects will end up on a canadian team
HEY!!!! Come on, Tavares with Kovalchuk?? Who could stop that? I do hope Tavares goes to a Canadian team, or at least a team like Colorado, Detroit(even tho i hate Detroit) because his talent would be appreciated by the fans. If he goes to Atlanta or Florida, that would mean nothing to the people from there. After watching the World juniors over the past couple days, people can see how talented he is, like scoring twice in under a minute against the Americans. Heres hoping that his talent is not wasted going to a bad team with a worse fan base.
Tavares is not going to be drafter by Detroit........ Detroit is way too high in standings to get to have first dibs on the 1st pick, so thats not going to happen
I think you misread... He said he HOPES he goes to Colorado or Detroit, even tho that is not practical. Tavares will go to one of the worst teams in the NHL, no doubt, but it sucks because then his true talent may never be shown because of the players he is around. Although, if he goes to Atlanta, maybe he and his linemate from the world juniors (espisito) may once again be reunited. Tavares, Espisito and Kovalchuk?

Good point, there has been lots of debate between Tavares and Hedman from Sweden. I think Tavares has solidified his spot and his future the way he has stepped up in the WJHC. He is a true #1. |

Posted - 01/02/2009 : 12:26:15 It would be nice to see him go to a Canadian team, Toronto and Edmonton probably needing him the most. But yeah Hedman is a huge player and he is so good, you really can't go wrong with him, so it is hard to say who will go number 1. Tavares really is showing himself well in the World Juniors which is a big stage in a young players career and the GM's like to see that. It will probably all come down to the teams needs, whether they need more help in the offensive or defensive department. I doubt a Canadian team will get either of these guys though, although it would be nice. |

Posted - 01/02/2009 : 11:59:10 That's assuming he goes #1 overall. A team might be looking to Hedman from Sweden right now as well. Although Tavares is a rare talent, a 6'7" defensemen who can skate and play both sides of the puck might even be a more rare talent.
