Tank for Tavares!

so here it is, considering the sens probably won't make the playoffs

trade gerber for a 3rd or 4th rd pick (maybe det)
trade smith for a 3rd rd pick (mtl or pits)
trade kuba 2nd rd pick (anaheim)

then we have cap money to sign bowmester.

Defence could be.. phillips volchenkov bowmester lee picard and (karlson or bell) and shoobert 7th.

then trade fisher and kelly and sj's first rd pick for filatov and leclaire form colombus. maybe add the sens 3rd rd pick also.

then in the offseason the sens bring up some young guys. and look for a good goalie if they dont get leclaire. maybe vokoum via trade? or backstom via free agency.

then on defence beauchemin is a free agent next yr and he would be a good asset to have.

what do you think?

Gerber just cleared waivers, so he's in the AHL making 3.5 million, so no one is going to trade Gerber for a draft pick, he makes to much money so no one wants.

Pit need 5-6 veteran defencemen like Smith

Leclaire is an injurie machine , he's been injured about 3 times this season

try to trade fisher, kuba, kelly and schubert for bowmeester and 1st or 2nd rd pick

Go Sens Go

Definatly some good ideas, but just to be clear. This was a suggestion to trade away some good(decent, i dunno, i dont watch many senators games.) players, tank the season, get some prospects, and Tavares, and start again next season right? I think every trade you suggested was fairly realistic, although i doubt Detroit would consider it, but other teams might. I cannot see columbus moving one of their young bright stars away. With Bouwmeester looking towards free agency and the panthers most definatly looking to trade him, Ottawa might be a good location. Maybe trading Kuba and some other assets might cover that, again not too sure of all Ottawas assets. I do think they need to trade one or two of their big three to get maybe 3 or 4 decent players that can give them more scoring spread out over two lines instead of only one. Goaltending may be their weakest spot, so they may have to worry about that first and foremost.

Now to me, this makes more sense:

"The Flames are rumoured to be considering bringing the veteran in as insurance in case workhorse Miikka Kiprusoff succumbs to a late-season injury.

According to a colleague in the nation's capital, the belief is the Flames might be interested if the Sens are willing to pick up half of the $1.5 million left on Gerber's salary. "

Why would Detroit do that?

They have two NHL goalies already.
Their AHL goalie Jimmy Howard is just as good or better than Gerber.
3rd or4th for a goalie they do not need, too much.
Taking on salary for a goalie they do not need, too much.

Why, of all the teams in the league, did you suggest Detroit as a potential target for Gerber? If he is not good enough for Ottawa who is trying to stay out of league basement, why would he be good enough for Detroit who is trying to repeat as Champions?

Yeah I agree, it would have to be a little more than that to get him out of Columbus, and for a player of his calibre to be coming in it would be on of the big 3 shipping out within a couple years due to cap issues and such. People say Spezza but I say Alfredsson, he needs to win a cup trade him off to a team that is going to win it like every other Swede in the game (ie: Sundin, Naslund). With him out leaves new chances for leadership and I'm not saying he is a bad player because he is one of the more prominent players in Ottawa I just think it is time for him to ship out, very shortly.

I agree, If Ottawa wants to get better they need to trade 1 or 2 of the Big three, for some hard working good hockey players, that can make plays and put the puck in the net. Because all Ottawa has now is Heatley, Spezza and Alfredsson, just those three guys alone equals over half of the max salary cap, and it doesn't work out with just 3 great players and a bunch of nobodies, they need to trade i.g. Alfredsson and Heatley for a few good young hockey players its better to have a team of good/decent hockey players than 1 line of stars and the rest of the team suck like the way Ottawa's team is now

not realistic at all
Habs cant afford smith #1
Habs are going to sign lecavelier so now they cant rly make room for smith. where those pitts have room for smiths.
thats where ppl are getting confused that almost every teams caps is almost full so therefore no one can trade players for drafts.... you have to be able to trade players for draft and players to exchange caps space. habs are trying to bring in lecavalier for higgins which he is 3 mil and plekanec which he is 2-3 mil... and they have 2 mil left on there space so it is possible.... habs cant do lecavalier for lets say 2 first round and 2 2nd round or some sort cause the way caps run they cant do it! Same withh almost every other team in the league why dont u think no one could land sundin...... DUH smith is getting paid 4 mil plus kuba 5? gerber 3-4? not sure but no one wants to gamble and can afford those with just drafts picks

Better start digging for trade ideas

I agree, some nice , realistic moves there. But I wouldn't move any of the Pizza line, especialy not Alfie. It's a rare gem in today's NHL that a player remains with one team throughout his entire career. Alfie will most likely be the first player in modern Sens history to have his humbers hoisted and I'm sure nobody in Ottawa would want him to become a rental player just to have a shot at the cup. Lord Stanley almost surely will not be showing up in Ottawa this spring, but that doesn't mean a bit of rebuilding (possibly through such trades as mentioned above) and some great youth development (which Ottawa has a strong reputation for) couldn't give us another run in the near future.

As for my opinion of keeping our big 3, I think a bit of backup on the depth charts, and a good puck moving, quarterbacking D, would surely put them all back up among the top 15 scorers in the league.

And although I would love seeing Tavares with the Sens, I strongly dislike the mantra of tanking purposely for future gain. I personally could never force myself as a player to give less than 100%, but I'm not in the show so what do I know eh

Here's wishing the Sens squeak in, but I'm not holding my breath!

Milbury and McGuire should fight to the death and both lose.

I'm impressed. I dislike the sens but I really enjoy seeing someone thinking of realistic trades and realistic goals.

Crosby is not the Jesus Lord & Savior of the NHL, get over yourself McGuire.
