About 1:54 of this clip, Ovie calls Cherry an ''old guy'' and a ''robot'' and mimics what he thinks a Cherry-celebration would look like if he scored. He goes on to say he will never be the type of player Cherry wants him to, in perfect English. One of the greatest things I have ever seen. This guy is too good!
By the way, it's a two part feature by ESPN. If anyone interested, here is part one:

OK a few points I want to get out on this one.
1)Personally, I would want to be a Crosby type of person (quiet.) However, as a fan, there is no question Ovechkin is more entertaining. What separates him from the other talkers out there is that he is more than good enough to back it up, and quite frankly, he really doesn't toot his own horn too often. He just has a good time. I've never heard him brag.
2)The driving thing is terrible. I was upset to hear that he drives that fast. Number one, it breaks the law. Number two, it's such a shame. The guy has so much in life and he could very easily screw it up by being reckless. Bruce Boudreau seems to think that is a compliment. Last time I checked, ''reckless'' was a derogatory word. This type of behaviour is dangerous to himself, pedestrians, and a garbage model for kids. That's not to say other athletes don't do it, but to come out publicly and promote it like that is disappointing.
3) Andy touched on something good. I do feel special watching Ovechkin as I grow up. Both him and Crosby entering the league at the same time is just such an incredible thing for the league. The fact that Crosby and Malkin have made the finals, Ovechkin has cracked 60 goals, all three of them won the Art Ross... it's really exciting as a fan. And Ovechkin does lead the pack, by virtue of his colourful personality. In life, that attitude can be annoying. Watching it from the confines of my living room is fun.
I am always amazed when people band together to decide something like "Ovi's driving is terrible". I am also amused by people who use "role model" against athletes and celebrities. If parents do their job then worrying about other peoples misbehavior won't factor in. If Ovi dies driving 200mph then I say congrats on going out doing something you enjoyed. Otherwise all the would a, could a, should a is your attempt at making this a much bigger deal for your sake, not his!!! |

Lots of players drive fast, this is true.
Not a lot of them are: a) the most recognizable player in the sport. b) a role model for a million kids around the world who want to be just like him. c) smart. Lots of peope abuse women, too. It doesn't make it right.
I am not saying you condone his driving antics, but maybe it is time people start taking a stand against some of this stuff before he kills himself or others. Even the Capitals management in that video take it lightly, and almost make a joke about it. On here, people say it's "funny" or "entertaining". Man, that is reckless!
You suggest I have a tough time keeping friends. It's not because of my personality. Maybe there is another reason...
In 1987, a friend of mine was killed when the driver of his vehicle was driving too fast and lost control of the car he was a passenger in. He was 16.
1984, two of my friends were killed when a guy driving recklessly hit them from behind when they were on their bikes. They were 13 and 14 years old, respectively.
I am still not over those losses, and Ovechkin laughs and says he is taught to "think about today, not tomorrow".
It is reprehensible that a guy (Ovy) who has lost a brother in a car accident takes that point of view. While other role models are out making public service announcements, this guy has legions of fans saying how cool he is because he drives his cars over 200 miles an hour on public roads. Imagine if a pedestrian was crossing the road when he came by...if he wants to drive like that on a race track, all the power to him. I think it would be fun, too...but on public roads?
Maybe I'm getting old, but I am also getting wiser, and this guy is a ticking time bomb. When it all comes down, I pray he only kills himslef, and not a friend or a family in a minivan or something.
Time to start "liking" other players, I think.
Or time for you to get a life??? Spend more time focused on the players you like and less worrying about OVI and maybe you'll be happier. You're bored!!! And boring!!! |

Posted - 04/27/2009 : 05:29:03 Contrasting styles is part of what makes sports interesting, and in that sense Ovechkin's personality (not only when put up against Crosby's, but against other players' today, and against superstars' of yesteryear) is a large part of what kids today are going to look back on in twenty years time and think of as a special "golden" time. Ironically, like him or hate him, in that sense Ovechkin is in the exact same category as Cherry - an unquestionably HUGE, make that ICONIC, part of our hockey lives as fans.
Having said that, I don't like some things the guy does personally. I prefer quieter guys. But that's me.
As for driving incredibly fast, etc on public roads (if he does do that), that's obviously totally wrong. It's one thing for him to do his wild celebrations, and quite another for him to be doing that garbage. I mean when you think about it, a lot of stuff done by athletes that gets a load of attention actually doesn't even come even remotely close to that in terms of deserving a HUGE reprimand. Avery's "sloppy seconds" comment, some comment about a sister in a World Cup soccer match, Federer's racquet smashing...arguably all not great things. But whatever level of reprimand those guys get from those close to them should be a small fraction (like 1/100,000) of the level of reprimand the Caps organization should be giving Ovie(again, if has indeed done something like that).

Posted - 04/27/2009 : 05:16:26 Fly4puckguy - No one insinuated that you didn't have friends - I pointed out it is nearly impossible to have friends that you don't agree with all the time. In my statement, I insinuated that you must have friends, actually.
And I got it that you must have had some personal touch with the reckless driving, and I am sorry to hear about those stories.
No, I don't think OV is the brightest light in the city, nor do I think that he is smart for wanting to do something his brother was killed doing. Doesn't mean I don't like his personality for the game of hockey. I didn't like some of the things that Gretzky did off the ice, but that doesn't mean I still don't think he's a great ambassador for the game in general.
And I totally disagree with Willus about the on-ice stuff - players DO respect him, actually, and I feel that he is respectful TO PEOPLE WHO RESPECT HIM (reminder to Cherry - it's a two way street). Doesn't anyone else see that on the ice?

Posted - 04/26/2009 : 20:00:46 The problem with Ovechkin is that he is disrespectful to others involved in the game. It's something most of you young guys don't have a grasp of. Sadly this attitude that is beginning to permeate the game is only indicative of the world as a whole. The young people reading this will undoubtedly not agree or even understand what I'm getting at as they describe his actions as enthusiasm and something that is great for the game but the older ones see it for what it is. Ovechkin has no idea what sportsmanship is. He should take a look at some of his fellow countrymen for examples of what that is. Datsyuk and Malkin.
Also if it is indeed true that he lost a brother in an auto accident and drives like he does, then I can only conlude that he has the brain to match his neanderthal looks.

Posted - 04/26/2009 : 08:38:01 Fly4puckguy - you are getting close to crossing the line.
No one thinks that Ovechkin's racecar antics are very safe . . . but to like Ovechkin's personality and style of play doesn't mean you have to agree with everything he does.
Do you really think Ovechkin is the only superstar who drives fast in fancy cars? Or do you think perhaps that he is one of the few who openly talk aout it . . . and lastly, do you really think that this is a new thing? There is a long list of hockey players who have been seriously hurt or killed because of drunk and reckless driving . . . just like all the big sports stars - baseball, football, soccer.
I like Ovechkin's personality - you obviously don't get a lot of the tongue-in-cheek stuff, or his over the top statements that he makes for impact. And that's ok - not everyone has to get it. And not everyone is able to like someone without disagreeing with parts of how he thinks or what he does . . . although, I don't know how you have any friends with that thinking.
Just never come close to accusing me of condoning reckless driving again, ok? I have a wife and a baby girl, but even without a family, I would never agree with that recklessness if it was done ON THE PUBLIC ROAD (hint: where do you think OV lets it out in his free time?).

Posted - 04/25/2009 : 20:00:00 I am glad I saw this.
It cements my dislike of the guy. Not only is he arrogant, and a showboat, but he also brags about driving 180 miles an hour with no remorse. He even jokes about how he "lives for today, don't worry about tomorrow."
Great advice for the kids, Ovechkin, you jerk. When you kill someone driving 125 miles per hour over the speed limit, I wonder how many of your immature fans will be backing you up then?
Seriously, I know some of you guys are a lot younger than me, but you can't possibly think driving like that is smart, do you?
If you think it is "funny" or "cool", I pray you never lose someone close to you (as I have) by a person driving recklessly, or you will know how foolish you really were. |
