Posted - 05/12/2009 : 07:22:44 I know its playoff time, and the leafs aren't involved but I had to get some reaction to Eliotte Friedmans report that there are heavy rumours circulating around the NHL that Brian Burke is putting together a deal that would send Tampa Bay's 2nd overall pick, Ryan Malone and his 7 year contract (or whatever it is), another big contract for Toronto's 7th overall and something else.
Tampa is apparantley extremley overbudget and cash strapped. Burke can bury contracts in the minors if he wants, and has cap space to take on a player like Malone.
I'm sure some of you will throw out the usual leaf hating company line of this all being "Leaf fan fantasy", but it seems to have some legs.
I still think Tavares will be an Islander, but if Burke gets the 2nd overall it will put him in a great position to get a franchise player that the Leafs desperatley need. Hedman or Duschene would both look sweet in blue and white.

I think that would be a deal, but that might be a little bit more stretched towards advantage TO. However, that is a lot more likely then what was originally offered.
not a chance... The Leafs need Schenn he is by far there most valuable player and I don't even think a Taveras for Schenn deal would be worth it... Hedman is a good defensive D-Man but not as good as Luke Schenn....
Personally I'd be happy to see Toronto sign either Taveras or Hedman, if they get the 1st or 2nd overall pick, if not, and they stay at 7th I'd like to see them pickup Brayden Schenn... And goalies after the age of 37 there legs go. They should trade them for some draft picks or young guns. Also if they want scoring then they sing the sedin twins Burke will sing them for cheep. But Burke is a good GM and He will use his brain and get good players the cap may go up or down and if goes up he has money to spend.
Who in their right mind would take a trade involving either CuJo or Kolzig?? They are both UFA's as of July 1st!! Seriously, just a little homework and you can find this information. Here, I'll do it for you!

If you want to see an electric city, just wait until T.O. goes deep again. This town will rock like no other. (save for maybe montreal... montreal would be absolutley insane if they were in the conference finals or beyond)

So this trade could be a roumor or Burke is trying his best to do what he did with the Canucks and Ducks. There are alot of free agents and I would be suprised if Burke brings Chris Pronger, the sedin twins, Teemu Selanne, Scott Niedermayer, Bertuzzi and Martin Havlat to the leafs hes got money to spend with the team with the most cap space he could do it. So leaf fans you very lucky to have Burke any team would love to have him as a GM and I would hate to see Bertuzzi in a leafs jersey since I am a Flames fan. But Burke in a least 3-4 years time will bring the leafs to glory.
I think you're missing the point of rebuilding a team.
Pronger - 34 Selanne - 38 Bertuzzi - 34 Nieds - 35
Signing these types of players is what got them in this mess in the first place. Does Lindros, Francis, Murphy, Roberts, Thomas, Mogilny, Renberg, Nolan, Housley, Leetch, Allison, O'Neil, or Tucker ring a bell?
Granted Pronger and Nieds could bring more to the Leafs now then the above named players BUT that's not the point. Bringing in over priced over the hill players is not a winning strategy for a rebuilding team. In fact they're concentrating on dumping players that fit that bill who are currently on the team NOT bring more in.
In 3-4 years (your prediction) when Burke is supposed to be bringing glory to the Leafs these guys will all be retired. How the hell does that help the rebuilding process? |

Homework time! Firstly, considering the Canucks haven't gotten past the 2nd round in how long the team that Burke "built" there did not succeed. And you might want to look back at those Ducks that Burke "Built" and see how many of them were there before Burke arrived and how many he actually brought to the team. Even more importantly, you might want to look at the fact before the moves the current GM in Anaheim made at the deadline, there were 5 defensemen and 9 forwards who were all UFA's this off season. Nice work Burke!!!
And, the Leafs have a dedicated $41 million on their payroll for this coming season. Even if the cap doesn't go down, that leaves only $15-$17 million. That's hardly enough for the Sedin twins themselves, let alone Pronger, Havlat, Bertuzzi, Neidermayer, and Selanne. Maybe next season, where they have only $17 million cap committed, but those players will not be available next season.
If Burke is smarter than I think he is, he digs in his heels and go through 1 more tough year. Draft well this year and next(adding to the likes of Schenn and Grabovksi) and see what's on the UFA market next summer. Then goes for broke in the 2010-2011 season. |

Maybe 7th pick and Kaberle for #2 . . . maybe. But I still find that risky, as Kaberle is a great deal financially for the Leafs and he's a solid top-scoring d-man.

I don't disagree completely, but is this not possibly Burke's ego getting in the way. I know that Schenn has proven himself at the NHL level already, but Hedman is looking like the real deal and he has the potential to bring more to the table than Schenn does. Plus, the 7th pick brings in another solid player. From what I have read, the top 10 prospects this year are all gamers. I don't know. It's toss up for me, but I definately hear your point. |

Sir - please first learn how to apply the one-plus-one-equals-two rule to this story. I'll try to help you out, here goes: It could possibly be that a Leaf fan could also be a TSN reporter (at the same time). Hope that's understood? Good, let's move on... Now being both a reporter and a Leaf fan - a reporter may tend to stretch the truth. Still with us here? Good... Let's continue... Apply the one-plus-one-equals-two rule.... And there you go!!!! A stupid reporter, at the same time an avid Leaf fan, stretching the truth a little on something he possibly heard 1% of, takes everything out of context - a voila!!! Tavares is a Leaf!!!! Now for panties getting in the picture, how do you know Burke wears panties? Is that a Leaf solidarity thing? strange...

I'm afraid you're wrong here. Teams releasing news are releasing "real" news on potential draft picks. Burke has officialy released nothing regarding Tavares except to deny any "talks" about the Tampa trade rumors. Toronto media puts RUMORS on front pages, and then fans start the "what if" scenarios as if the know everything and "care" about hockey. They don't care about hockey - all they care about is being on the hockey news front pages, regardless if it is based on rumors. And that's because they know they will NEVER be in hockey news front pages based on a WINNING team, or even a cup winning team.

Ok - so Leaf media and fans have Tavares already in T.O., and already have decided that Schenn is staying put. What about a goalie - since Luongo's been in Vancouver news - does that mean he's on his way to T.O. too?
I'll bet that almost every GM has been calling the lottery teams to see if they can get a hold of top picks from them... only difference is that Burke uses the media to show how well he's doing and how hard he's trying to please the desperate Leaf fans. And all you fans fall for this crap!

Posted - 05/13/2009 : 11:30:00 I think if Burke gets the 2nd pick it going to be for the 7th pick and a few Million bucks. Tampa needs cash they have a solid group of players their they can get a decent pick in the # 7 spot like somebody else said this is a pretty good crop of players. Or they involve Kab's and Malone some how because Tampa needs a D-man and TO would then have a chance to draft Hedman #2 overall and have a good chance of having two young D-Men with high expectations or go for a guy like Duschene or Kane with a nice scoring touch.

Beans - I don't think Tampa deals the 2nd for just Schenn, doesn't really make sense for them to pass on Hedman in favour of Schenn.
Burke wont trade Schenn anyways, its kind of a moot point. The leafs 7th, Kaberle and Schenn is WAY too much for the 2nd pick and its not going to happen. I can still see a deal between these 2 clubs, as I strongly beleive tampa wants to dump some salary on toronto, its just that the players involved in the deal may end up surprising alot of people.
I can definatley see the leafs switching picks with tampa, but also taking back some salary in 1 or 2 guys, and sending a cheap young player the other way as well. Matt Stajan comes to mind, so does Kulemin.
I know this is getting into fantasy land territory, but If I could get say, the 2nd pick and Ryan Malone for the 7th pick, Matt Stajan and Tomas Kaberle, id do it.

This is all part of the negotiation process - start high, and get 'bargained down' to a decent deal in the end. Burke already stated that any deal offer with Schenn was a non-starter, so we ALREADY KNOW he isn't moving Schenn . . . well, at least not for any draft pick, no matter how high.

Posted - 05/12/2009 : 17:59:24 I was of the understand that Burke was only going to trade up in the draft if he could get Tavares?? I don't think he has said a whole lot this his end of the year press conference and he said clearly that he wanted to trade up for Tavares.
I also agree that a deal involving Kaberle, Schenn, and the 7th pick for the 2nd pick and Malone (and any combination of said) is complete ludacris. I have little to no respect for Burke as a GM to begin with, but this would completely confirm that. This draft is deep enough to get a quality player at the 7th spot and not have to lose your blue chip defenseman of the future and a legitimate #1 or #2 defenseman today. That's too much.
Now, the other piece of this is that if Burke can snag the #2 pick, he might be able to use that to get all the way up to #1. But it's also reported that Garth Snow wasn't too happy about the "grand standing" Burke did at the season ending press conference and that he is not willing to talk to Burke about the #1 pick.
I seriously don't see this happening, yet stranger things have happened. |

He's trying to improve the club, nothing has even been done yet, yet somehow its a desperate move by a desperate gm. He is in the first year of a 6 year deal, he is far from desperate. Its going to be a calculated gamble if anything happens.

Hey 7752, long time no trash talk.
I think rambo said "best gm in LEAF history.." not of all time. I would never even consider that...
who cares about sundin now, his career is over, ill cheer when they raise #13 to the rafters but his era is over. You win on the sundin debate, he didnt play well for vancouver. He's old, injured and washed up. Once a dominant force, not so much anymore.
Also, this isnt some made up wet dream im having, Eliotte Freidman was reporting on CBC that numourous NHL exec's had mentioned that they heard this was going down, and he was also on the FAN590 saying the same thing. This doesn't make it a fact or a sure thing, but it is a juicy story for leaf fans.

There's still lots of time, we'll see what happens...
There is no "I" in team, but there is an "M" and an "E". |

And even with Tavares or Duchene, we still arent a playoff contender. To be considered a playoff contender, we need a goalie cause Toskala is horrible. |
