Anaheim traded Chris Pronger and Ryan Dingle to the Philadelphia Flyers for Joffrey Lupul, Luca Sbisa, 1st round pick #21 overall in 2009 (which was traded to Columbus for 1st round pick #26 overall in 2009 Kyle Palmieri and 2nd round pick #37 overall in 2009 Matthew Clark)also included from the Flyers Anaheim will be getting 1st round pick in 2010 and conditional 3rd round pick in 2010 or 2011....

My question is Which team got the better deal? feel free to explain....

Look at the Oilers when they lost him. He was their team.
Now they arent a playoff team due to him leaving and them picking up prospects and picks that didnt pan out to be anything equal to his value.

Iginla for 2010 team captain.
Flames for cup...eventually.

Anaheim gets full value for Pronger . . . yep, you read that correctly! Here is one of the premier defensemen in the league who will only go downhill from here, a 35 year old in decline, although he is still playing at a very high level. And at the same time, Anaheim is very very bare on draft picks . . . so to get what turned out to be a low first round pick and a second round pick this year (supposedly rich year for talent), a first round pick in 2010 and a potential conditional pick - this is quite a bit. ESPECIALLY now that teams are really looking to build through the draft like the last two finalists Detroit and Pittsburgh, these first round draft picks are really being treated like gold, you all saw the number of trades in the first round this year . . . it was pretty bare.

So not only do they get a few good picks, but they get a decent second liner in Lupul, a warm body that has played well for them before.

To me, this is a pretty high price for an aging superstar, but Philly is already a pretty deep team and they can afford to sacrifice some of that depth for one of the pieces to put them over the edge (although everyone knows they need a goalie). For Anaheim, the trade away Pronger and get very full value for him, with lots of youth coming their way - again, exactly what they need.

It's win-win, with the edge to Anaheim if any of those picks turn out to be pretty decent.

35 years old or not, Pronger is one of the top 5 defense in the league TODAY. I am not talking about future promise or anything else. Today, on the ice, Pronger is in th top 5. And although I agree that Anaehim achieved a drop in salary and draft picks for the future, the team in Anahiem lost a key piece that will not be replaced any time soon.

Even though Philly is really putting together a solid core, they are currently over the cap. So this means they'll have to ship Briere, Gagne or another top paid player out of town.

Look at all those picks the Ducks got...they got a couple this year, no biggy, but next year. They get the 1st rounder off the bat, and the conditional pick. So either way, if Philly does good, they get a better conditional pick, if they do bad, they get a higher pick in the 1st round next year. Anahiem won this deal (in the long term). Right now, with Pronger gone, Beauchemin is a free agent, Neids said he would comeback, but as a Duck? Safe to say they'll be looking to sign a D-man...

You don't replace a Pronger. Look at Edmonton once he left. On the ice, Anaheim is the huge loser in this. It's not even close. Although I like Lupul, he's going to be a career 2nd line player with maybe a glimpse of being a 1st line player on occasion. He's get his 20ish goals and 50 points, but that's his max. Nothing against that. It's solid, 2nd line numbers. But his action on the ice does not compare to Pronger. The others will not have a positive impact in the near future. Short term, this deal definately goes to Philly.

And I am not sure where this lots of penalties comes in. Sure, Pronger averages a little more than a minute of penalty time a game, but so do the likes of Chara, Souray, Phaneuf, Komisarek, Blake, Jovonovski, Ohlund, even Kubina had more PIM than Pronger. Sometimes a defensemen has to take a penalty to save a goal, and when you are a player like Pronger, there will be a few more penaties than others. But that is a small price to pay for the 27 minutes a game, 50+ points, one of the league premier defensemen and potentially the best two line passer in the game.

The kicker in this deal are the draft picks. They might turn out to be gems or they might be cubic zircons. But for today, Anaheim has gotten worse and Philly significantly better.

A move to dump salary that's what this was about. More of that to come from Anaheim. Thats the mandate from the ownership.

Essentially Anaheim got back the biggest piece they dealt for pronger and 3 first rounders, they win

I picked Anaheim here because Lupul is a good young hockey player with a good future, but Pronger is arguably one of the best defensemen in the league, although Pronger takes a lot of stupid penalties, what good is he in the box... Lupul is also a quite a bit younger, the younger you are the more energy...
Dingle hasn't played an NHL game yet and for a forward really hasn't done anything in the AHL, doesn't really seem to have a bright future in the NHL...
Sbisa is a solid young D man played 39 NHL games this past season, seems to have a good NHL future ahead of him, he's not a Pronger but he's going to be good...
Anaheim also pretty well got two 1st round draft picks a 2nd round draft pick and a 3rd round draft pick out of the deal and all Philly got for all of that was Pronger and Dingle
