Just to note that the games are being played on NHL sized rinks not international sized rinks.
Even during their run to the cup, I didn't see anything from Jordan Staal to merit mentioning to the team let alone to be on the team over some of the others invited.
I think Toews showed he should get the call over J. Staal. Personally I think publicly Sakic will be named to the team, but he will be pressured in the backroom to decline and relegated to the standby roster. Canadians way of saving face. |

Goalie
Personally, you need to go with Brodeur on this one. Reason being, he is a winning goaltender with tremendous skill.
On a side note, it's quite interesting the way this situation is unfolding. The Brodeur/Luongo debate is due to the fact that they do both have their drawbacks. The knock on Brodeur is that he is moving along in years, which is a bigger problem when you're dealing with a goalie that plays a reflex style of goaltending. Meanwhile, Luongo hasn't had much success past the World Juniors. I just don't get why Cam Ward isn't being considered for the starting job. Arguably the most composed goalie in the NHL today, he is a sound positional goalie who clearly knows how to win (he's even done it with Canada - 2007 WC.) And he's in his 20s. Maybe this guy isn't getting enough credit.
Defense
Given who's leading the team (Yzerman) and who is coaching it (Babcock), you've got to figure Team Canada would favour a puck-possession style of play. The best way to keep the puck is having d-men who can make a strong breakout pass (offensive guys like Boyle.) Especially valuable on a bigger ice surface. That being said, with all the offensive talent Canada will have, the primary task of the defense has to be shut-down hockey. That's why guys like Regehr belong on the team. I also like Neidermayer, Pronger, and Bouwmeester to get the call. And probably not Phaneuf.
Forwards
A big problem with the 2006 team was, at least according to Don Cherry, the notion of picking the most talented guys over the ones that worked well together. For that reason, Heatley needs to make this team, despite the negative attention recently. Heatley, Nash and Getzlaf form an awesome line. I'd like to see the good Vincent Lecavalier lace 'em up. Can't say the same for St. Louis. Joe Sakic probably shouldn't be competing to play center against guys like Crosby, Vinny, Richards, Thornton, Getzlaf, Eric Staal etc. An interesting fourth might be Jordan Staal centering Milan Lucic and Shane Doan, though I'm not sure how well that chemistry would work out. In the end, the story on offense is that there are way too many centers, and it looks like a whole bunch might need to switch to the wing for these Olympics. |

My original lineup made in about mid 07/08 season I believe. With a few tweaks due to players not being named to the selection camp, etc.

Extras - Lucic (this guy may very well make the team over St. Louis in my opinion, depending on which look the team wants to have.) & Jeff Carter (if Vinny or Heatley doesn't step it up, the kid is on the team). Also I am aware of Sakic and left him off due to possible injury and/or retirement.

7th & 8th D-men - regehr and Boyle, this is the hardest decision ever.. we may have the best D ever Seabrook, Burns & Keith could very well be on this team as well.

Well I'm not sure it's a such bad thing to go to the olympic. The player got a good motivation to perform all season long and the break the other players get is a break of like 3 weeks without any competition. Yes they can injured themself but we all know that the olympic is not as tough as the NHL. |

It is not at all a stretch to think that Calgary has 4 Canadian Olympians on their squad next season. Add in Jokinen and Kipprusoff, I'm not sure that any other squad in the NHL had 5 of their players in the Olympics this coming February.
However, will that extra couple of weeks of playing help or hurt??? Thinking of the other teams in the NW, will that be an advantage of more of their players resting while the like of Phaneuf, Regehr, and Bouwmeester are going against the best players in the world for a couple of weeks???
Time will tell. All I can say is that with the list of 46 Canadian players, I think that there could be 2 teams picked that would compete quite nicely. It's a good time to be a fan of Canadian Hockey. |
